Red Zones: Philippines - The Dark Side of the Sea: • Red Zones - World’s To...
“Tepito” in Mexico City - arguably the most dangerous black market in the world. At first glance, the no-go zone looks like any other market - yet the main thing you’ll find lurking down the alleyways behind it is death. It’s ruled by the “La Union” gang. The Tepito cartel deals in drugs, weapons and assassinations - anything that you can use money to buy.
The gang plays cat and mouse with the special units. And anyone caught in the crossfire is risking their life. Residents also call the area “Barrio Bravo” - the wild neighborhood.
Estimates suggest that around eight kilos of cocaine and half a ton of marijuana are sold in the alleyways of the no-go zone of Tepito every weekend. It is a place where people pay up to fourteen thousand euros to hitmen for a single yet fatal bullet. A silent knife attack. Or a blast from a shotgun.
The normal police force is barely able to keep the situation under control. According to statistics, Mexico City alone is short of over ten thousand officers. So, in their fight to stop the gangs, the authorities rely primarily on a special unit. Consisting of four hundred men in total, the troop is ready for action around the clock. And the gang members are prepared to kill anybody who might ruin their business.
Tepito - a place that doesn’t play by society’s rules. Where the powerful “La Union” gang rules. And people die on a daily basis. It’s a daunting, deadly no-go zone!

I remember coming here when I was about 22 years old. I'm from the US but my dad lived in that area so he wanted to show us around. At first it was fine, everything seemed cool. But once the sun starts to set you really feel the tension. We started walking towards the outskirts of Tepito and let me tell you, I have never felt so unsafe in my life. Once I saw that even my dad felt uncomfortable I got scared. Some cops stopped us ( I guess you could tell we were tourists) and told us to leave the area ASAP.

I an American and I used to live in Mexico, but not Mexico City. My Mexican friend and roommate would travel to Tepito every few weeks to obtain cheap jeans, aftershave or perfumes for his girlfriend. He also had worked in a bank within Tepito, so he knew the rules and what not to do. Once he asked me to go with him so that we could go to his parents' home in another part of the city afterwards for dinner.
Upon arriving he told me to roll up the windows and lock the doors of the car. At each stop sign, we never came to a complete stop. We parked the car in a safer area and walked a few blocks to where we were going. Within seconds at the market, someone walked up to my roommate and demanded money, so my friend gave him a few coins. Not satisfied with the number of pesos, the robber grabbed my friend's necklace. No one said a word to me or even bothered me at all. After the robbery, we bought what we came to buy and left. Once we were far from Tepito, I joked that no one wanted to rob the Gringo wearing a Cruz Azul jersey-- Cruz Azul is the Mexico City's soccer team. When I asked my friend why he didn't try to stop the robbery, he said there were many people watching us at that moment.
I have visited Mexico City many times since then, but I have no need to ever return to Tepito

Those cartel associates would literally cross back and forth the Arizona-Mexico border, armed to the teeth with American weapons. I've been to Tepito probably 10 times, 2 of them I made vlogs. I don't think it's the no go zone this film is making it out to be. It is absolutely dangerous IF you are involved in that kind of illegal activity. But if you go to Tepito just looking to buy some knock offs during the day and stay the main streets your biggest risk is just pick pocketing. It's one of the busiest markets in the country, full of life, streetfood, dancing and a bunch of really fun bars in the street. You can buy 1.5L michaladas and drink them anywhere. I've gone with the most innocent backpacking girl and not once did they feel in danger and always have a great time. Me and my roommate would cruise through Tepito if we were bored and walking around Centro and not even think twice about it. It is unfortunate it gets this reputation for crime, Yes all the crime is true and present, but when you go and you aren't looking for trouble it can be really enjoyable!

They place was fun in the 90s. Went back recently... Never again. It makes Detroit look like Mr. Roger's neighborhood.

Dates back to the time of the aztecs. Originally named Teocultepitan, which the Spaniards shorten to Tepito. It has always been like this an informal market/outdoor swap meet (tianguis).

You're doing an incredible job with your tough documentaries. I've always wondered how do you get these hardened thugs and criminals convinced to agree to film their illegal activities?

These documentaries are not filmed by this channel, they’re just rebranded and reposted. Fair play to them for publishing them for all to see though

As the other guy said, the documentaries are not produced by this channel, but I can imagine the original filmmaker just pays these guys money. Someone that kills people for money surely also gives an interview for the right price. What I additionally wonder tho is how they convinced them that they wouldn't leak their information to the police. Surely an ordinary contract saying "we wont snitch on you, we promise" wouldn't have much value for these guys, as they are lawless anyways.

yeah. documentaries are presented with the same sort of drama as hollywood films. it brings suspense and boosts viewings. the only way to appreciate any environment is to go there with an open mind having done your research and just act sensibly. chances are nothing will come of it. but if you go with preconceived notions and fear then this attitude will attract its own trouble. in fact whereever you go.
