  • @ItsaRomethingeveryday
    @ItsaRomethingeveryday Před 4 lety +22

    There's a oil sending unit on the motor by the oil filter that trips the oil pressure

    • @bradcliff7099
      @bradcliff7099 Před 3 lety +1

      These oil sending units are very well known at going out! I've put 5 in mine. It is located on the backside of the engine towards the passenger side more. For some reason they start to leak and before you know it you are way low on oil. That's why the low pressure light came on when you accelerated hard or rounding a corner and braking. It was probably low enough that it couldn't get picked up by the pump under those conditions of braking, cornering etc. If the bottom right side of the car is soaked you'll know.

  • @biohazardshrimp
    @biohazardshrimp Před 4 lety +51

    Had you stopped revving it up it may have survived. It needed an oil pump. That’s why it dropped at idle. They are crank driven so they go up and down with rpm’s at idle the worn pump was not strong enough to pump oil. Whenever you see a low oil light the last thing you do is romp on it. You are pretty good at troubleshooting man you know this. Come on lol.

    • @hareshrawal13

    • @Strikedown2k
      @Strikedown2k Před 4 lety +2

      Oil pump or pick-up tube seal or the tube could be cracked above the oil level in the pan. Heat from driving could expand the gap and cause low pressure. Pump is definitely more likely though.

    She spun a bearing, that's exactly what happened to my Impala in may; it had the 3800 series 2. I heard that noise pulling into my job in the morning knew it was a spun bearing. Later that day, I said a small prayer before I started driving home, barely made it home from a 30 mile drive. I pulled in my driveway, revved it, and seized the s.o.b. I sold the car to the local salvage yard the next day.

    Whenever you use electrical tape in wet areas, you should also use Liquid Tape outside the tape you put on the wiring. I have used Liquid Tape for many years in automotive environments with a zero failure of connections. I installed a two-way radio in a fire truck years ago with the radio connections outside under the truck because the connectors could not be pushed through any holes in the body. I had to cut the cable and put it back together outside the cab. Installed for about 10 years that way. When the truck was sold, I pulled the connection mess apart to see how the wiring fared over the years. It was like new in there. BTW... you could have used the wire loom protective plastic the factory used to protect the wiring from physical damage. You also can use self-fusing rubber tape as a water seal AND a physical protector. First tape the wires separately with electrical tape. Then Self-fusing tape over all of that. Then wrap with electrical tape over the self-fusing tape. Finally the Liquid Tape. That Liquid Tape is awesome stuff!!!

I was hoping to see a follow up video showing you cleaning the engine bay etc. with new tires a detailed interior and cosmetics taken care of I would have suggested starting at $3100.00 asking price. Sorry you had the oil pressure issue. Maybe take the pan off , clean the screen, polish the crank, replace the bearings, finding what was floating around that was stopping up the oil strainer, if it a bad oil pump, slap the pan back on and back on the road again? Let us know please.. keep up the good work. Phillip Hall

      I don't know if that's a fair statement. I think GM has some amazing engineers. When they want to, they can do amazing things- look at the EV1, Volt, Corvette* and SSR. The problem with GM is that some things they do really well and put a lot of money and effort into only to cost cut in other areas, on the same car even and then you end up with some inferior/cheaply produced products that fail prematurely*.
      Granted, this Grand Prix has some miles on her so even though it sucks to have a catastrophic engine failure, I think she's been an okay car. She was probably nearing the end of her useful life, anyway.

      @darren dorion what about the gt350/500 that blew up with 5 miles on the clock, point is, shit breaks sometimes, and its noones loss, stop looking to blame a car manufacturer because they arent your selected brand, kindly, the car enthusiast community.

    That's a pretty typical oil pump failure on those 3.8's. I've torn down a few that went. The oil pump is on the timing cover there two gears in it that strip out. I had another customer that was accelerating onto the interstate and got a low oil pressure and shut it off immediately and had it towed an we were able to replace the pump and gears and it lived. Typically, they will work not work go all wonky for a few minutes, then they start spinning main bearings till one falls out and then no pressure to anything and it starts dropping rod bearings. Nice to catch it on video. FYI those 3.8's are the easiest engines in the world to swap. I have done enough of them that I can swap them in about 4 hours. There is a plethora of good used junk yard ones.

    Lost the engine on my 1997 Grand Prix GT similar. It lost pressure for some reason and blew oil up around the filter. I thought maybe I left the old seal on but no it was something else or a defective filter.
    Also there is a recall on the key being able to jiggle with weight on it back ACC on the key tumbler to and cause the car to turn off.

    check all the vacuum lines running from the throttlebody. mines done this. check fuel pressure regulators on the fuel rails, and those vaccum lines. idk. ive had a idle air control solenoid go bad that sort of had the same issue.

    Dang randy that's a bummer. I know it sounds like rod knock and probably is, however, I had a gm once that the issue was it sucked a bunch of crap into the oil pick up and was starving the motor for oil. Perhaps when you romped on it you sucked up some crud. If it's an easy oil pan removal maybe check that first?

    I worked at a Buick Pontiac dealer 20 years ago and would occasionally see a problem like this. The problem would develop after someone did the intake gaskets and allowed old gasket to fall into the valley. After a while all the gasket material would clog up the screen on the oil pickup and starve the engine of oil. It's really a bummer a lot of engines got ruined by allowing this to happen.

    Randy I would find a field to park non runners in and sell the parts off them on Ebay, Craigslist, or FB Marketplace. It wouldn't take long at all to recoup the money you have into it. Maybe even make some extra! Just a thought. I bet Jessica would be great at cataloging and shipping as well as advertising.

    Open and honest as always Randy. So you took a punt (as we say here) and it nearly paid off. You found some serious wiring issues and fixed the car. You DID fix that car. But it had something else you couldn't know about. But I would take the bonnet (hood) struts back off mate ...
    I would reckon as a parts car has to be worth what you paid but I understand only certain 'dealers' can do this in the USA? Take it to a scrap yard rather than the hassle of Copart Just IMHO.
