46115 Scots Guardsman & 4498 Sir Nigel Gresley at a crowded Carlisle 21 05 22

  • With virtually no trains running between Dumfries and Carlisle, I had to take a 100-minute bus ride (and not a luxury long-distance coach!) to reach the Citadel this morning. Similar problems were besetting almost every route out of the Border City.
Word reached us initially that Scots Guardsman had been failed at Carnforth and her train was very late departing for Carlisle. Following her on realtimetrains showed her making quite astonishing progress over Shap - something was obviously providing an unusual boost - word eventually reached us that she was actually at the head of the train and not failed - the video will show where her remarkable turn of speed came from.
Sir Nigel Gresley - in wartime guise - managed to arrive at precisely the wrong moment, hidden behind the shunting stock of the Cumbrian Mountain Express.
The Guardsman did then fail when it came to departure time and a very lengthy delay ensued with the footplate crew being dispatched into Halford's in Carlisle to buy replacement parts for the locomotive - you just couldn't make it up! She got away eventually, by now worryingly low on water and presumably anticipating a very late return to Euston.
Finally - another 100-minute bus ride home.
The compensations - two superb locomotives, the sort of crowd normally only brought out by Flying Scotsman - and a lot of old friends.
    Enjoy!

You've the patience of a saint, Tim. I was aware it would have been a good day to see steam at Carlisle but knew of the service disruptions north of the border. I live in Dunblane and decided not to make the trip but figured you'd be there! Thank you for this video.

Thanks Phil. I've just returned from another day at Carlisle and I'm afraid the level of cancellations is becoming unbelievable. I've already had to cancel a booked day away to Sunderland this week because ScotRail's cancellations of late trains meant that I couldn't get home.

Well there’s one thing I’ll say Tim, you certainly like a challenge and from the start with the bus you got one then the crowds but you keep your cool when others probably wouldn’t, unlucky for Sir Nigel’s arrival but at least you knew where to stand once that stock had passed, excellent as always, cheers 👍

Keep my cool? It's a good job the camera didn't pick up some of my mutterings - which had to be kept very low key as I had an 11-year-old companion with me for much of the day.

Wow what an eventful day wish I could have been there as I would have loved to have seen Sir Nigel but unfortunately inflicted a back injury last weekend so confined to you tube. Seeing the crowds and the long wait, well maybe not. So your wonderful video was a great arm chair alternative many thanks again for your efforts and hopefully Sir Nigel will return later in the year and I can be there JohnK.

      - - onboard - - lucky you! Waking at 04.25 - next week there's a special (not steam) arriving at Carlisle at 06.56 - I'm going to have to be up at 03.30 to get there to film it, assuming it actually runs. (Three steam specials have fallen victim to the strikes this week). To add to the fun, it doesn't return until 22.36 - this is going to be a seriously long day as I then have an hour's drive home. What we do for our art, eh? Best wishes.

What a day it turned out to be. Very well captured amongst the crowds again Tim. Whilst you were frustrated at missing Sir Nigel arrive I was frustrated at them backing out the 86 at the same time as she arrived hiding my view and mostly sound of that. After that I set off on my long walk and waited and waited in the end giving up on seeing Scots Guardsman pass I got back to the station to find she was still there with the AWS fault. The bonus of seeing both locos together was a treat, sometimes bad things turn out good. On the way home we overtook Scots Guardsman in Hellifield loop and were able to make up the time we lost.

Carlisle was very busy yesterday! Excellent record as ever. After both trains had headed to Upperby I was off to a favourite spot near Cotehill on the S&C planning to get Guardsman and have a leisurely drive to Eden Valley loop. Myself and several others gave up before Guardsman passed otherwise Gresley wouldn't be seen. Now we know what the delay was - had expected a diesel from Carnforth!

There must have been a lot of frustrated observers along the route with no means of knowing what was going on - I had a similar experience at Wetheral a year or two ago when Flying Scotsman suffered an AWS failure - very disappointing.

My initial reaction to the sight of her in wartime black was sheer horror - but the more I look, the more accustomed I've become - I've learned to live with it! Never mind - she'll soon be repainted into a more becoming livery.

      - - - and thank you Stuart. Filming from the platform has its drawbacks but at least you get close to the subject, which is often stationary. When filming by the trackside you get one chance - usually very brief - and if anything goes wrong - well, tough! Best wishes.

See, nothing wrong with the steamer again. That's very often the way, that it's the electrical add-on gadgets that are at fault. Still, has there ever been an electric loco banking steam over Shap before? 🤷‍♂️

Thanks Stephen. Hobbies are like jobs - they all have their downsides. Carlisle station can be desperately crowded on special occasions but at least there's plenty going on and usually adequate time to obtain a variety of material. Lineside filming is much more demanding - and less forgiving. My local line (the old GSWR) is dead as the dodo these days - a light 66 or 70 is something to get excited about! - and I really can't afford the petrol these days to go doing trips to Appleby (200 mile round trip) or beyond so - Carlisle Citadel - here we come!
      Best wishes.
