45690 Leander fails at Carlisle 10 07 22

- A scorching hot Sunday 10th July 2022 - temperatures to which we are unaccustomed in the border lands, with brilliant sunshine producing strong shadows and reflections - 45690 Leander brings The Waverley into Carlisle from York.
Whilst shunting in the station she suffers an element failure in her superheater and is unable to provide the motive power for her return trip.
Smart working on the part of West Coast Railways enabled the now Class 47 hauled train to set off just 39 minutes late.
Leander's done very well for itself in recent years and put on a good number of performances. Iv been behind 45690 seven times on railtours (4 being where it double headed with another loco including most recently with 34067 Tangmere) and not once on any of those tours iv been on with her on the front has she failed. When they normaly have just come out of the works a few mechanical issues like hotboxes happen but over time it usually runs fault free except for that day where the superheater failed.
An enjoyable watch of a different sort of day. Told the story of the day very well. Thank you

@@schoolshorts I'll watch out for those. The loco looked well cared for - pride in the job as shown in your shots of the cab fittings etc. The crews at Barrow Road and Holbeck would be pleased to see that. They took a lot of care of their locos in the final years of BR steam

Hi Tin I did 50 years on footplate I started at edgeley shed in 1961 I finished in 2011 but I fired the Flying Scotsman in 1973 from Manchester to Derby and in the same year I fired Leander from Derby to Manchester it was Red then Regard Phil 😁👍.

Good job WC have plenty of operational 47s. They were everywhere this weekend
They were certainly quick off the mark getting this one up to Carlisle to perform its rescue mission.
WCR certainly have a large number of Basil's in their fleet but they do have a good number of tractor's alongside cromptons and a few bodysnatchers.
Lady blowing a kiss to the fireman 3.45 may have contributed to the issues of the day. He obviously took his eye off the ball and blew his superheater LOL

Thanks David - I don't know how long a repair will take but West Coast Railways have a very busy period ahead of them and will need all the locos they can muster.
What are the consequences and risks of pushing on and hauling the train with a failed superheater element? If the whole superheater fails, then in theory it could operate as a non-superheated engine back to the depot? Any engineers out there, please explain!
I'm not an engineer so can't give a detailed technical account but - put high pressure steam and any sort of failure together and the consequences are likely to be spectacular - and catastrophic!
Depends on the fault but if was a leaking superheater, the pressure released would defeat the vacuum in the smoke box which draws the fire, and there would create a high risk of blow back in the cab. The superheater is part of the main steam supply to the cylinders and if one is fitted it can't be isolated
These things can't be helpet I guess good video though just on a the off chance when the steamer goes off to turn around is there a turn table some where?? Cheers Paul
Hi Paul. Yes, machines that are 80, 90 or more years old do tend to fail occasionally.
The only turntables that I know of in Cumbria are on the narrow-gauge Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway. Steam locos at Carlisle arrive facing north, reverse down to Upperby depot for servicing then use a tightly curved single track to access the Newcastle line at London Road junction (now facing east) before reversing back into the station facing south and ready for the homeward journey.

I did think of using some of their music as background - but there would have been copyright issues! Might have guessed you'd pick up on that.

A very hot day for you. Not really to my liking when it gets so warm. I am not sure how big a job it is to repair a super heater element Hopefully it can be done quickly with all the tours WC are doing. The HST was very late as well. I saw both trains on Railcam and the HST should of run before Leander. Hope all goes well on your next day out.

@@schoolshorts Tim I found out. It is not a good week for WCR I just found the Thursday tour will not be class 40 hauled for operational reasons Also my busses are back on strike so my plan to go and see that is out. Look forward to seeing your videos.
I'm really not a fan of when it gets too warm cause in my family if you get too warm there's a risk where you can faint if you get way too hot. It actually happened to me a couple of weeks ago when exploring Southport & on that day it was boiling.
That was a interesting day it’s great to see steam trains in Carlisle but not when they fail

A veritable Cook's Tour - Derby - Grantham - Doncaster - Leeds - Carlisle - Newcastle - Darlington - - - I'd have paid to travel on it!

Carnforth could do to get another steam locomotive back in service 4 isnt enough especially with breakdowns
Carlisle alone has 4 steam-hauled and 1 diesel-worked (not from the Carnforth pool, I think) specials in the seven day period starting on 10th July - I haven't looked to see how many other services they're working elsewhere. They're certainly pushing their locos hard.

@@jameshardy4354 presently WCR steam wise has got 34067 Tangmere, 35018 British India Line, 45690 Leander, 46115 Scots Guardsman & just recently 44932's come back from heavy surgery (overhaul). With 45690 being out of traffic though after the superheater pipe issues & as 34067 usually only works northern belle trains plus that one off enthusiasts trip in January when double heading with 45690 (I went on that trip) & as 44932's still being tested at present as it's not yet done the loaded test run that leaves just 35018 & 46115.
Galberta Leone (Galatea with 45562 Alberta's cabside number and 45627 Sierra Leone's smokebox number and nameplates) is a dead duck as was withdrawn in March for overhaul, 48151's still being overhauled and it's unknown what's going on with 34016 Bodmin & 34073 249 Squadron.
@@MasterMoyle I carnt see 34073 steaming again i think shes a parts donor her r boiler is now on Tangmere and some other parts are on Tangmere plus princess Elizabeth needs overhauling there is also 44767 George stevenson with is getting worked on I've seen pictures
@@jameshardy4354 the oil bath we know that 34067 is using is off 34073 as it managed to destroy it's own while out on a railtour in 2006 & 34073's boiler is now we believe on 34067.
