I don't think Nixie is passive-aggressive enough to withhold artillery support from people who need it, but doing so would be a reasonable enough response (and given that Vlithryn has been guilty of deliberate teamkilling in the past, her comment about friendly fire sounds a bit rich).

Payment is still required after treatment and if you don't pay, most providers will go after you legally until they either get it in full or you set up a payment program. You can refuse to pay but if you don't ,you'll end up having your wages garnished and you'd better hope you never need to buy something like a house or a car because it will also ruin your credit.
@@upinarms79 The law is called the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act of 1989 (EMTALA). You can Google it. In short, emergency care must be provided regardless of ability to pay.

@@thejanssen6030 Depends. Florida would make bank, but other states would probably adopt ableist and classist policies to define “stupid” and might include things like not having preventative check ups marked as stupid, even if the reason is because someone can’t afford preventative care.

Why
In this world healing magic exists at supposedly no cost to the healer and they are party members I would guess. Although cults need $ and spell slots are limited so there do need to be limiting factors.
How civilization advanced scientifically would make no sense for other medicines though mostly. Potions and healing spells would prevent the need for that growth. How civilization formed in itself is a question as Druid magic gives you food, heals you, cures disease, makes shelter, and can protect you.

I pulled this of a bit differently back when I worked at Kenzer & Company. Steve Johansson tried to get back at me by writing the KODT strip Healer Dealer. A temporary cleric character asked for either payment per spell or at least a retainer fee to move the character to the top of the queue

i tried to play a cleric like this once, a legitimate role play type, but the rest of players bitched and moaned till i just switched characters then we had no healer
in an L5R game I was in, one of the party members was crying for magical healing for every minor injury. The Shugenja (cleric/magic user) made the roll, but intentionally failed.
