- So last week was my one year anniversary with the 1997 Porsche Carrera S that I got last year on my birthday. Although I was never a fan of the 993, this car was calling my name.
Like many times before, I made a roadtrip up to Norcal and found my Carrera in a city called Redwood City, CA which was owned by an older lady for over ten years. She was looking to sell it to buy a Porsche Macan as she was getting ready for retirement and move to the mountains.
In the last year of ownership, I put on 1700 miles and 500 of those miles were from the driven down. This being my 3rd aircooled Porsche (964 C4, C2) and this being my first 993, I thought the experience would be similar but with more power. That is where I was wrong. Although similar in many ways, there are many things that are much different in the driving department.
Then in November of 2017, I started to mod the car with Bilstein PSS10, Fister III Exhaust, Rothsport Short Shifter Kit, Porsche Turbo Brakes, etc.
I am started to really understand the car but there are still many things to learn about it. Which is why I will now be starting a more regular vlog about my journey into learning as much as I can about this most iconic chassis, the 911.

Regarding the clutch throw. I’ve worked out you don’t actually need to put the clutch to the floor. It’s got a high pickup point and you can just do little short stabs of the clutch pedal and change gears. Totally changed how I drive it now and is much better fun. I think that’s what the Porsche engineers had in mind with this vs 964 setup.
I have a '97 993 Turbo and I pay $300 to have my oil changed. There are two additional drain plugs - one for each turbo so yeah, paying a good shop to do it is worth it in my book. By far the 993 is the best looking 911 ever, IMO. I do agree on the 964 still having that iconic 911 front end, but I disagree on your point about the front face of the 993 (I know it's all subjective and all good). I love the fresh look of the 993, but then again, I love the traditional front end of the 964 too!
Never had problems with my immobilizer ..... zero .... You have a great looking car. Hats off to you for all the work you do on it yourself and the praise you give to and the use of it as a family car is tops! I had a '98 C4S but sold it to get an ultra low mileage '96 Turbo. These cars are classic and we can hope they will continue to hold their value. Happy motoring.

Hi! I love your video and I agree with most of your findings. I have a 993 convertible in my garage and I bought this car mainly as an investment back in 2011. But more and more it is not about the money but about the fun to drive one of the latest air-cooled Porsches.

I have just gotten a 1995 Porsche 993 Carrera RS and I'm supper excited to get to wrenching on it as since the mid 70's I have owned a 356SC, a 912, a 1977 Targa and built my own 1973 RSR. Wish I still had two of them. 1965 356 SC in English racing green and my RSR. At this point I need to mention I did most of the wrenching. Over the last six months I have found all the things that you mentioned to be very true this is a completely different monster. Four of your five hates I'm changing. The shift will have to have a short shifter, oil change no longer a half hour task, it is more like several hour task, as luck would have it the lock out is complete disconnected, but I'm left with a rates nest wiring in the car. I love the front and back ends on my car. It 's front looks like a smother ver.s of the earlier 911s. All an all it's going to be fun getting her on the road, at preset it still in a race car config. I have to make it street able. Found your 5/5 very informative. good luck with yours and the family.

If you don’t like the clutch, don’t use it. You only need the clutch to take off in first gear. Changing gears without the clutch is fun and easy to do, even downshifting. All you need do is get your engine speed to match the transmission speed and it drops into place. Don’t be afraid to practice.

The ergonomics are the lowlight for me. The non adjustable (offset) steering wheel and offset pedals means I can't quite get the seating position as good as it could be.
Haha! I have a ‘95 -no immobilizer invented yet lol! But then again, it didn’t have keyless entry either. I had to install that! Had the pedals rebuilt and updated-clutch throw is great now
That damn immobilizer is the WORST!!
Great list. Havent fallen in love with the front either, but will take the rear end to compensate (best 911 ever). That damn immoblizer...was laughing. Your missing the door click when opening and shutting. Perfection!! Mine is going in soon for a RS flywheel and can't wait. Fister III's are music to my ears. May even add an X pipe with new cats and really piss off the neighbors.
lol the fister IIIs and the door feels was gonna be a bonus to the video but it was taking me so long that i was gonna do a follow up video in the future....but you hit the nail on the head!
911cooled Films - I actually used a recording app and made the door click/opening as my ring tone..lol...makes me smile when the phone rings. Yeah I got issues...hahah
As for RS Flywheel, I would like to hear about your experience FTLAUD. I have a 964 which came with a lightweight RS flywheel and the car kept stalling and messing up -- always. Eventually I had to fork out $4,000 to buy a new stock flywheel. Was not worth the pain for me. Maybe 993 lightweight flywheels are worth it, but I would be cautious.
Cold Gecko - I haven't installed it yet. Did a ton of research. In the 964 and the 95 993 you have to install a Steve Wong chip (OBD1). Even then people noted it solved the stalling issue most of the time. You also have to run the AC as well to help. Supposedly in the OBD2 96-98 993 the ECU is able to compensate more reliability for the RS flywheel. There is still the possibility, but not often. To help there is a mid weight flywheel option that helps even more. I go back and forth whether to get one or not. I do not mind the flywheel chatter since my other car has it and actually like it. The 993 I think needs it personally. The engine seems to increase rpms slowly due to the increase in mid range torque vs the 964 which revs more freely. Not a cheap mod so wanted to make sure I was all in before paying up. My flywheel is on its way out, but car isn't my DD.
I do have the Steve Wong chip installed. For me, it was just a bad experience. Unless you plan to track your car most of the time, I just dont get it? BTW: I own a real 964RS and a real 993RS -- both super low miles but I drive them on occasion. My experience with the 964 C2 and the lightweight flywheel is not the same. The factory RS rides like a charm with no issues and yes, feels light without the headaches.

I have a 993 and yes the clutch is annoying in how late it takes up. I have stalled the car so often at traffic lights! I replaced the throw kit with the RS short throw kit and something called a Golden Rod strange name but both really improved the gear change. The Porsche mechanic said he had not installed this kit before, but would be recommending to his 993 customers.
Yes makes such a huge difference..!
Oil cooler ballast resistor (what a PITA to change). Leaky valve cover gaskets drip oil onto the heat exchangers. Belt tension sensor seizes. 4-way / 8-way seat controls stop working. Window switches in doors. Sunroof liner sags. Corrosion at bottom corners of both front windshield and rear window. Small oil filter is a PITA. Two green ABS relays on pax side of trunk loosen up rendering ABS/ABD inop.
And that's after 23 years of ownership!
True. 964 front end is 10 out of 10. But the overall 964 looks is just 7 out of 10. I don't like the narrow, sloped rear at all. 993 front end is just 8 out of 10 but the rear and silhouette are absolute perfection. It IS the best looking 911 ever made.
993 is definitely a good looking car but 964 narrowbody is my favorite

993 was my dream car ever since it came out in 95 and I must disagree with you about the front end. I really enjoy seeing how the bumper,fenders and the hood comes together. Same detail also found on 968s. I did ended up getting 964 C4 though. I am about the rebuild the engine on my car, any advice from you would be great, cheers

Your right about the key/Immobiliser Pain in arse... Yes Prefer 964 front to 993 Clutch Never bothered me Had Both cars and the worse to drive for me was a Carrera 3.2 I had for year... The 993 For me drives best... But all beautiful.. Still got my Pastel yellow Carrera4 993 with Rs Body kit I love it and it could be a keeper
nice! the 993 has definitely grown on me over the past year after I started modding it but that clutch throw is killing me still.
I disagree on the face, i love the face as well cause its an adoption from the 959
I LOVE the 993 "face" from the side, but straight on, I feel like it needs either a complete splitter or the left/right lips to really be complete. That ass though...one of the best in automotive history. Even better than a Testarossa.

Oil changes are easy and not sure why you are removing the heat exchangers - I have done literally hundreds and it's a piece of cake once you have done it a few times. As for the front end, remove the headlight squirters and bumperettes, and put in Turbo S ducts instead of the fog lights, and the front end is clean. As for your clutch, the 964 and 993 share the same design for the pedal cluster and clutch circuit, but there are huge variations between clutches depending on the wear and type (DMF or RS Flywheel, regular or GT3 or whatever clutch disk, pressure plate variations which cause huge changes in weight, bite and feel). If your clutch is not worn, the engagement should be in the lower area, like half way down, and if the engagement is towards the top, that typically means the clutch is wearing.
The car does have 80k miles so it could be on the end of its life.... but i have been in many 993 and they all feel similar. They just feel way different from 964s. I did the oil change one time on the 993 and followed a tutorial online. It was to get to the secondary oil filter, not sure how you access it without removing the heat exchanger but if you got a method, I am interested in hearing about it. I already have the turbo bumper so it looks better than the standard 993 bumper but its just the way the lines were cut from fender to hood to bumper. Either way, it is slowly growing on me as I continue to mod it.... we shall see how things flow in the next year. thanks for contributing Mike!
Funny! The Love list I guessed, but I had to see your hates. I agree, the face is not it's best feature, but the bootie makes up for that. The oil change is the only thing I HATE about my '95 993. See cumbersome. Such a PIA!!!! Great view!

You car looks incredible. Really tasteful. If you think 959 when you look at the 993 face then it clicks. The rear end on a widebody 993 is the best looking of all time - on any car. The OEM stance on the C4s/Turbo is pretty close to being on point. Porsche nailed the formula with the 993 and they've never really been able to find that magic again. The modern cars have ridiculous performance, but they are dead feeling and absolutely massive looking. Emissions and safety standards make it pretty much impossible to make a car like this anymore. I used to own a 991 and will be picking up my '98 C4S today...

i have a 993 carrera S. it comes with the taller turbo shifter i suppose, i cut it out cause i wasnt a fan of it.

Every time I look at the front of my 993 something tells me ... those 964 front lights are just iconic, should I get one? But the very next thought is: the 993 was just ahead of its time with the front lights copied straight from legendary 959! That makes me feel a lot better! ;-) By the way- it is not all about the way it looks! Great vids, enjoyed it a lot!
To be honest, ever since I made this video, the front end has been growing on me. I had my buddy drive my car so I could get some rolling shots and I looked back at the car saying, damn it actually looks good... I think it just depends on the angle. But you are right, maybe its just not its time for that swan to blossom lol.... but that backend always makes up for it. Thanks for dropping a comment...
The oil filter in the top where no man can reach and turn at the same time Is a bitch. And. After I installed it and filled the oil, my buddy told me it was not the right part number without the oil check valve in it. Mine is a 96TT. There are two different oil filters for the hard to reach one.

Just started following your channel. Keep up the good work! Will be getting my 993 hopefully in the next two weeks. What does your fam think about the Fister IIIs? This would probably be my first mod, so still debating IIs or IIIs. Leaning towards IIIs, but don’t want to drive my wife and kid crazy if we go out with the Porsche.

i havent kept up with targa 993 pricing but i would say $50-60k would be fair today

I'm glad I don't have to remove my heat exchangers on my 964 and I thought the oil change is bad on that car. That would suck taking though off just to simply change the oil.

Thanks for sharing your personal (sub-par) opinion. Given the cosmetic mods you have on your car, i would say your views on the look of the car is just wrong...don't share (e.g. that shifter knob should be on a black Honda civic).
