Sammy Davis Jr. sings Judy Garland's big torch song from A Star Is Born, The Man That Got Away, ala Vicki Lester, with a living room performance using a MMO recording.
He is amazing. Love his humor and looks and of course dynamic presentation. Hard to believe he could not perform for Kennedy - because of his marriage to a white woman. May Britt. Sad history.
I didn't know that. You mean Sammy wasn't alllowed to sing for President Kennedy all because he married a white woman??? Was there that much prejudice in the Kennedy administration? That is so wrong!!!
+Denny Jones - for the same reasons that all great art endures! Movies, plays, books, music - clearly from the current spate of revivals of ancient Greek plays in London [2015], great art still speaks after millenia - this has only had to endure a few decades!
If he was going to change the lyrics, he should have kept the original lyric of the MAN that got away, but made the changes elsewhere so that HE was the man that got away.
But both Sammy and Sinatra don't change the last line: "A one-man woman looking for the gal that got away." Which makes it a lesbian song. Or bisexual.
Sammy can sing the dictionary and it would be his own. This Harold Arlen/Ira Gershwin collaboration is fantastic.
Damn, what a voice! I was always a great admirer...
I was born in the right century but raised in the wrong one. The whole pack I LOVE’M
Nobody is cooler than Sammy
Sammy's performance is second to Judy's .. but Wow! What a Great Talent .. INCREDIBLE!
I miss Sammy. What a truly wonderful, talented, amazing man.
GOD==What a musical genius.
From a mad keen 73yo Aussie fan.
Ok Sammy ❤❤❤
You really do get a sense of the power of his artistry
From a show called Playboy’s Penthouse TV. Ran in ‘60 and ‘61 and filmed in Chicago. This episode was filmed in November of 1960.
Sammy is so cool and debonaire. I love and miss him.
What style! What class! And that voice!
Would so love to have heard Judy’s opinion on this performance... 🌈💛

SAMY was so gangsta!xxxo
goosebump city. god, he's great.
✨🌼💐🌿🌞🌿💐🌼✨🎵🎵🎵Absolutely sublime thank you ✨✨✨
Amazing performance!
Sammy Davis Jr., oh yeah, only the Prince of Cool Jazz could do a Judy Garland classic and make it swing like Sam the Man!
Sing it, Mr. Sam!
SDjnr's studio rendition is on one of his last discs for Decca, Sammy Awards, available as a CD twofer along with the earlier album Sammy Swings.
Wished I could’ve been in this room 😇
I didn’t know expect to love this!
Why does this so so good despite its age?
+Denny Jones - for the same reasons that all great art endures! Movies, plays, books, music - clearly from the current spate of revivals of ancient Greek plays in London [2015], great art still speaks after millenia - this has only had to endure a few decades!
A good song will last, plus we used to have good, real singers .... quality of songwriting has gone down the toilet over the last 30/40 years.
I know it is really clear! Crisp sound!
wow the sound quality is incredible! what is a MMO recording? how magical!
♥️♥️♥️🤗.....Sammy Davis❗️
Solid rendition
I want to be at this Playboy's Penthouse party---smoking, drinking, singing, looking cool. I mean the guy's singing with a brandy snifter in his hand!
nocount1 we were born at the wrong time
Cigarettes & booze shortened Sammy's life
This song takes guts to sing (similar to My Way, except I much prefer this song). Sammy kills it of course.
Smooth
Lady gaga better bring it ! An Tommy Davidson got the o.k.. for his biography. Love pia zidora !version.
So GREAT ~ Total Class ~ what a great vocalist he was ~ wow ~ BRAVO 👏⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
even Sammy sings.."a one-man woman......."
Yes, just like Frank. Makes it very gender-bending.
he does a great job with this song, better than Sinatra
joey josephs every song he sang in playboy after dark he sang better than frank although sam cant sing some frank songs imo
He could be better than Sinatra when Sammy was in a coma.
Oh stop it! Sammy loved Frank and would not have agreed with this statement. They both sang it well. But it was Judy's song.
More emotion w Sammy’s version
Loved Sammy’s autobiography both of them
The cigarette would not be done now. - I had no idea he was so great; also better looking when younger.
is this Rob and Laura's living room?
Does anyone know what this is from? I know I've seen it before but can't place it.
Thanks 💙
If he was going to change the lyrics, he should have kept the original lyric of the MAN that got away, but made the changes elsewhere so that HE was the man that got away.
Bruh's wig was quite shiny!
BE NICE IF THEY TOD US WHERE THIS IS FROM.
MICHGO1 gotta be the Playboy Mansion
MICHGO1 this was the Playboy Mansion After Dark TV show hosted by Hugh Hefner. Great show with amazing guests!
Why do they feel the need to change the lyric to female? Good thing most singers nowadays do not!
Cayetano Tirado Janis Joplin changed Bobbi McGee to a man. Etc etc etc. It's nice we don't have to now, though. But it also doesn't hurt.
Back then they had to change the lyric and tweek the gender from guy to gal. They don't bother anymore. And the audience could care less.
But both Sammy and Sinatra don't change the last line: "A one-man woman looking for the gal that got away." Which makes it a lesbian song. Or bisexual.
