If he was going to change the lyrics, he should have kept the original lyric of the MAN that got away, but made the changes elsewhere so that HE was the man that got away.

Why do they feel the need to change the lyric to female? Good thing most singers nowadays do not!
Cayetano Tirado Janis Joplin changed Bobbi McGee to a man. Etc etc etc. It's nice we don't have to now, though. But it also doesn't hurt.
Back then they had to change the lyric and tweek the gender from guy to gal. They don't bother anymore. And the audience could care less.
But both Sammy and Sinatra don't change the last line: "A one-man woman looking for the gal that got away." Which makes it a lesbian song. Or bisexual.
