    I bike commute to work on some insanely fast declines and some fast stretches. Having a full face helmet is something I considered doing, especially when I accidentally side swiped a pole with my right side of the bar and flew off face first. A top portion of the helmet is golden but honestly, my cheeks and cheek bones deserve the same protection. I’m getting a full face helmet soon! 👍🏻

    Having ridden and raced enduro motorcycles for most of my life, I’d never consider riding one without a high end full face helmet.
    I’ve also been into MTB since 1990. We realized pretty quickly even back then that the capabilities of mtb really called for helmets, something we never wore during our younger bmx years.
    Fast forward to today, mountain bikes are just as capable as dirt bikes and trails have become super gnarly and way more dangerous if you do make a slight mistake.
    I just picked up a Rail 9.8 as well and I decided to order a full face because I can already see how much more aggressively I can ride it.
    I think all it takes is for some local fast guys to convert to full face and the rest will follow. I think a lot of people want to wear them but don’t want to be called out for thinking they’re so fast they need one.

      I agree. I don't know what it is about cyclists in general making fun of protection equipment. That does seem to get better over time. I used to get made fun of all the time from people at local trails for wearing knee pads. Now they are everywhere. It's almost like you "weren't tough enough" or were a "poser" for protecting your body. It was very strange. I think it is from a lot of riders who started out on the road biking side of things. They weren't laughing anymore when they couldn't keep up on the downhills though...

    All about full face. Came from BMX where not where a helmet (90s) at a park was a really, really good idea. Fast forward to me getting older and MTBing, and I see a lot more danger in downhills at local trails. Myself, being a terrible MTBer, has still already lost the front and rolled into trees.
    With all the stumps, roots, trees and branches, a light weight helmet with my riding glasses and kneepads on that are light weight is ideal. Hitting any of that stuff at 15+ mph in the woods on non-manicured lines... no thanks.
    Nice vid, and thanks. I will check those out.
    Also, will look through your past vids for the computers on your bike. Always on the lookout for something to replace my 10 year old Garmin (especially if it is eMTB designed).
    Thanks!

    I don't trial ride or do anything like I imagine most of the guys watching this video do, I just cycle around locally. The other day I did something dumb and went over the handle bars, my face took the full impact and now I have what looks like road rash on one side of my face with some pretty decent cuts on my eyebrow and forehead. I'm now looking for a full face helmet and wondering why most people don't just wear them everywhere?

  • @ivan.rusanov
    @ivan.rusanov Před 3 lety

    Luckily for me, I haven't had an accident, where full-face could helped, but I've had accidents which could have been way worse (like yours) if I was wearing a half-shell. I've had one major head injury resulting in a concussion and 30 minutes outside the trail without the ability to stand up on my feet. The rotational MIPS system on the half-shell Giro trail helmet probably saved me from a bigger damage.
    I'm now always riding with a full face helmet. I feel unsafe without it.

    Hi I recently start mountain biking and I’m loving it I watch your videos and their dope . Thanks for the advices and I pass on all the info on my friends . I have a question if you don’t mind I wear prescription glasses I can’t wear contacts and I’m trying to find the best helmet and googles so I struggle less . I wore my regular half shelf helmet but my glasses kept falling down during the downhill and I took them off and I fell lol so it wasn’t fun . If you have any advice I will appreciate it a lot. Again thanks for your tips and loving your channel

    • @Bike198
      @Bike198  Před 3 lety +1

      I wear contacts as well. You either have to experiment with different glasses to see which ones work the best with your helmet that don’t slide. I have always had great experiences with the Oakley’s. The perfect situation is to wear goggles. There are half shell helmets that support those now and that is really the perfect solution.

    I am definitely considering getting a ventilated full face. I had to get a dental implant/crown last year (not from biking), and I definitely don’t want to have to go through that again. Plus, I have a public-facing job, so even if it’s just cosmetic damage to my ugly mug, I’d rather try to prevent it.

      @@Bike198 Does the sound of the MIPS rubbing in the Mainline bother you? I'm thinking about getting one but have. seen some people online raging about that.

    • @Bike198
      @Bike198  Před 4 lety +1

      Any of the ones with MIPS are going to have the same issue. I don't notice it on downhills but if you shake your head while climbing it is noticeable. Nature of the extra protection I guess. You don't get that on half shells because you don't have the ear coverage or leverage of the chin weight.

    Great vid - very professional; again! Anybody reading this should consider pressing that subscribe button. Anyway, full face. My boy is 25 now and has been riding MTB with me since he was 8. At 10 he was starting drops and speeding up and I made a decision to ride full face with him. Pretty soon, he wanted his ‘cos Dad always wore his and fortunately he has a big head (🙄), so we found one fitting a 10 year old, even back then. He and I became completely confident in company wearing them. We’re in the UK and we have NEVER had any negative comments, only positive ones, sometimes guilty positive ones.
    He has had to discard one helmet and I have discarded two for significant damage to the helmet (not our heads 😌) during crashes - I need say no more about the importance of helmets nor our MTB ability 😂🤣🙄.l
    So, now we both use the newer style full face enduro helmets mentioned in this vid. Ours have a removable chin-piece. We use the chin-piece whenever there are obstacles we might hit (tree trunks, boulders etc), irrespective of the grade of track.
    I notice the next vid YT is recommending as I write this is your Bike198 "Teach Kids Mountain Biking".
    Very apt 😀
