Thank you for this, it makes me feel better about being an absolute beginner. I can not tell you how embarrassing and intimidating it is to have better bikers, even the younger ones at the parks I go to (I'm middle aged and an avid downhill skier but we don't get much snow anymore so I'm trying this out since there's almost no ski season anymore here). They have their own groups and stare at you side-eyed while you head away from the harder trails. I actually decided to leave on our last ride after only two laps because I was so uncomfortable around these people when we'd get back to the lot. I'm constantly wanting to quit when people like that are around and having so few parks here but also having a huge biking community creates a LOT of snobby elitists at each park you go to. I never, ever had this experience in skiing or even professional horseback riding where almost *everyone* is a snob. I have an awesome bike and want to ride it. I really need to get over my intimidation before I quit and have barely started :/ I miss skiing.

So it really depends on where you live. Where I live road bikes are worthless. Why tons of hills and even more gravel roads. So gravel bikes are nice faster than a MTB and still capable of taking hills.

Dude, regardless of price, I don't LIKE what the bike industry is offering! I don't like any new bikes. You can see that in my fleet, which is comprised of vintage bikes. My newest bike was made in the 2010s, I think. I have two MTBs: a Fuji Nevada 4.0 hardtail, and a 1999 Raleigh M30 rigid that I've had since new. Both have 26" wheels. Both have 3x7 drivetrains. The Fuji has an Al frame, while the Raleigh is CroMo. I am not a fan of these 1x drivetrains. Give me an honest 3x7 or 3x8 drivetrain any day of the week, TYVM! Oh, and they both have-gasp-RIM BRAKES! Both my MTBs have V brakes, which are more than enough for the riding I do. I understand the appeal of disc brakes, especially for downhillers, but they're more than I need. My road bikes are both 38 years old. They both have 27" wheels. They both have rim brakes. And, here's the best part: both of them have-gasp-DOWNTUBE SHIFTERS! No one runs downtube shifters anymore. Why, they haven't been used since the Stone Age! Downtube shifters may be low tech, but they're reliable; they still work. My Marukin M420, which I've had since new, has an Ishiwata 025 CroMo frame with Suntour ARx derailleurs, Dia Compe rim brakes, and a Sakae crankset; the chainwheels are 53/39. I also have a Cannondale ST500 with a Shimano 600 groupset. It has an Al frame that's azure blue metallic. The LBS had it, having taken it on trade years ago. It was too big for the LBS' owner, so it was gathering dust in the shop. I asked the owner if I could give it a home, and he said yeah. I had it refurbished, and I now enjoy it. Though my Cannondale is old, it's still a fast and fun bike. I LOVE IT! It's more than enough bike for me. Why do I run all vintage bikes? One, because I like them. Two, the bike industry doesn't MAKE anything I want! They don't make anything I want at any price, so I won't buy new. I'll keep my vintage bikes, and I'll ride happily ever after... :)

When motorcycles cost less than bicycles do SOMETHING is very wrong! I can understand exotic carbon frame bikes for racers, but for regular riders? Come on...

When a dirt bike is 8500 and a bicycle is 10k. It's greed, just like components no way does a groupset cost 2500.

I think you are a bit off and unfairly biased targeting Mtb, based on your anecdotal experience. I think the “Hardcore” or “Core”in any individual action sport has the same issue. However I do agree with you that the mtn industry is wack! F the industry and there BS! In my experience like any business there is some amazing people. But a large majority of corporate industry is wack as f!

spending money on a good stand is nice if you work on bikes regularly. A one time builder or someone that won't use it much may not find the investment worth it. It all depends. I don't have a stand at the moment and i'm currently building an old bmx bike for my son. i would like a stand, but im still looking.

To be honest I don´t think it´s a mountainbiking problem. I think it´s a problem with dumbasses deciding to get into a certain sport. I´ve been riding mountainbikes for quite some time now. And I have met alot of people in all that time. Unfortunately only a few have been really decent human beings. Most being dickheads. Before riding mountainbikes I was into enduro motorcycles and owned an EXC KTM. On this bike I would run enduro wheels and go enduro riding or switch to supermoto wheels and go supermoto riding . And here´s where I noticed the difference most: the enduro guys I went riding with were all(!) really cool people. The supermoto folks not so much. Enduro is a very challenging sport. Compared to supermoto or motocross not as fast but technically very challenging. SM and MX on the other side are very fast categories. Technically not as challenging. Therefor in a sense maybe easier(?) if I may say? In SM and MX you can get fast very quickly. I would compare these categories to freeride or DH on relatively easy tracks. Most dumbasses I met while mountainbiking were really good and fast riders that could go big on jumps. But they wouldn´t ride on really challenging trails. They wouldn´t ride uphill. Let alone uphill on technical trails. Long story short: The more challenging the ride is, the more decent the people are doing that sport. Sound logical? (Excuse my english, it´s not my primary language)

Gravel bikes came out of the sport of tour bikes or touring bikes, and first used in Europe. In the 80's, touring bikes were very popular, and I'm sure they still are today, but different in design. As I too had a touring bike back in the 80's, only Bridgestone bicycles had an official 'hybrid' road/gravel bike design; basically, a road bike with slightly wider 1-1/4" to 1-1/2" slightly knobby 27" tires. HOWEVER, before I discovered this Bridgestone bike, I had already began using my Schwinn Voyageur SP touring bike for a bit of off-roading, however, on 1-1/4" road tires... I saw the potential here; better tires for gravel and bike touring could hit the unpaved trails far better, as I had already been doing, but without modifications. It was not until the early 90's when I got my first hybrid bike that I truly began to enjoy both road and dirt, and that was with a GT Continuum bike I bought for about $480 new; it came with 700D 1-1/2" tires, and a lightweight frame design that made it far better handling and nimbler on the trails. Keeping in mind, this was not an attempt to be a Mountain Bike, but a bike suited for the occasional recreational city street and off-road courses without having to compromise on either in a pinch. Since the vast majority of my riding was on street and about 10% was off-road, it was perfect. That's what a Gravel Bike is made for; it is not a replacement to a Mountain Bike nor a replacement to a Road Bike, but a convenient Hybrid for some, perhaps many everyday riders who want a bit of both for recreational fun... even for touring. If by chance I want to hit the trails hard, I'll use a Mtn Bike, and if I want to hit the road hard, I'll use a road bike, but occasionally I like to do a bit of both with the same bike, and a hybrid of the two is perfect and NOT worthless.

may be if bike businesses push for a lobby like car lobby (who absolutely rule the city hall of american cities), then they could have some hope for future, bike businesses are passive surfer of demands for years and never thought may be they can have a leverage as business (in corporate america) to push for bike infrastructure. in contrast ebike companies are pushing this

One thing in the mtb world that I think is worth spending money on are brakes. You really get what you pay for with them. It's a lot less diminished returns, at least in comparison.

Road biking IS dangerous, what with the texters, the NASCAR wannabees, the hostile drivers who don't think that cyclists should be on the road anyway and those who enjoy harassing cyclists by yelling and sometimes throwing things. It's scary out there, but I'm still doing it, well-aware of what can happen and too often does. We all take risks in life, some more than others. I still can't fathom those that race their motorcycles up to speeds approaching 200mph on the Isle of Man.

I don’t understand why all these bikes cost what they cost. My suspension kit on my Bronco wasn’t 6k lol. I would love to own a full suspension bike but I don’t see the value in them.

You seem mad, and excited motorcycle manufacturers are getting in to "e bike design" I'm actually excited they are getting in to the mix, right now they give us much more bang for the buck than bicycle manufacturers do. And bicycle components just don't hold up to e bike use. We need some wild steps in this direction to get to where we need to be in the market, as a "prototype" none of us have ridden, we have no idea if it would work well or not, like brain storming all ideas are great at this point!

Whats wrong with my bike?

Last year, I was hit by a car while commuting on my bike. I was wearing bright clothes and using a flashing taillight but there's nothing visual that can grab the attention of a distracted driver. In my accident it was a young lady who had a crying baby in the back seat. Anymore, I just have too much anxiety riding on the road. We have a paved trail nearby that goes for nearly 100 miles so I ride on it instead. The downside is I have to load my bike into the car and drive to it.

Good news. I switched to Specialized bikes when the Kent sale happened. No I can think about buying a new KONA Cross bike in the near future ! Saw-weet !
