    About The Video:
    Is there a way that a trade you've made could just blow straight past your stop-loss and lose you a whole lot more money than you expected? Yes there is...
    It can happen when you're using a lot of leverage, and there's a significant 'Gap Down' in the markets.
    A Gap down occurs when the price an asset closed yesterday is higher than the price of that same asset when the markets open today. But how could this be? Surely if the markets are closed, the price can't change?
    Sounds like it should be true, but there are hidden sessions of trading, unreachable to the likes of you and me on eToro called the 'after market' and 'pre-market' trading sessions.
    We don't have access to them on eToro, but if you do a quick search in Google, you'll soon see that after the markets close each day and before they open the next day, there will be trading happening and the price of your much-loved equity will be on the move. Now, usually, these after market and pre market sessions don't actually have much of an impact on the price of the asset - not enough people are trading really.
    But sometimes, there's some bad news about your favourite asset, or a botched earnings report, and in that gap of time between the market close on day 1 and the market open on day 2, traders exiting their positions, and short-sellers have been furiously trading away, lowering the price substantially.
    When the market opens the next day, the price jumps lower, potentially bypassing your stop losses and causing much concern...

    Market gaps don't necessarily happen because of pre-market or post-market trading. Market gaps can actually happen in the middle of the day. It is important to note that exchanges are actually auctions. Traders put in prices at which they are willing to buy, or sell at, and transactions happen when the seller's price and buyer's price meets. Extreme news can cause people to be more afraid of being unable to sell their stock than of selling at a loss. Collectively, they set a price far lower than what it was the day before. This causes a gap in the price.

  • @mikerainham
    @mikerainham Před 3 lety +2

    Yes “gapping” can be a problem, certain events can trigger it and the stop loss simply means you sell automatically at the next lowest price, if the next lowest price is a big dip you sell much lower than you intended. You can avoid that with stop limit orders, buy etoro doesn’t have this option yet but it does have the trailing stop loss which many brokers don’t have, it’s a good experience overall though.

    I've started trading a couple of weeks ago and I'm a big fan of your videos. What is still questionable for me is when I copy trade and make profits on a given session (day), shall I close the copy trading so I can get the profit added to my equity? or Shall I keep it open. The issue with the second is that P/L percentage has been going up and down between .05 and 2.8 Max on all copied accounts and at this rate, I fail to imagine that P/L rate will go up to +20% all of a sudden! And even if it does, I imagine it will go back down. QUESTION is, How do I make profits from copy trading? and what happens to the profits gained on a day?

    • @Davion525
      @Davion525 Před 3 lety +1

      If the person you are copying closes a profitable trade, it gets added to your capital used in the copy trade. He can then re-invest that by opening a new trade. You can do this manually by closing some of the trades if you want to get the profit yourself, and from there you can remove funds from the copy without stopping the copy trade.

    You forgot about the fact that all etoro accounts opened after April 2 2017 have minimum trade sizes. Unlike you (a happy owner of an older, pre-April 2 2017, etoro account), we cannot open a 20$ trade on Tesla, or any other assets for that matter. The minimum size for any stock is 500$ for most of us. So if you only have 200$ you are *forced* to use leverage, even if you don't want to, otherwise you cannot trade stocks at all. Either you invest a considerable chunk of 500$ at x1, or you play with leverage. By having this high minimum trade size limit etoro basically promotes (enforces even) the usage of higher leverage, making people lose more.

    • @SocialTrading
      @SocialTrading  Před 3 lety

      yeah, I cant make a $20 trade either :) it was just for explanation purposes... and yeah, the minimum trade sizes are a real shame as they do force people to use leverage which can cause problems. I made a video about that when they changed it - quite a while ago now...

    Hi,
    Big thanks for sharing your experience from which I am learning before boarding the trading platforms. I have few queries, thankful to have your opinion on that,
    1. In Etoro, is there any time limit up to which I can hold my trade for long time, say 5 years,
    2. Under which circumstances Etoro closes trade on behalf of trader. Is there any rule set for the loss % when Etoro triggers selling out of those trades automatically.
    3. If I have 5 trades active (for example) , 3 trades I am gaining, 2 are on bad loss, what can be Etoro's action if I have not set any stop loss limit for the losing trades.
    Thanks in advance.

    Some great info here on etoro, Thomas, I’ve recently subscribed. One thing I’m trying to find out before signing up, do you have to use leverage to copy trade (ie. risk more than 100% of your funds and possibly get a margin call) or can you just copy using just your actual funds ie say you invested £1K. Also do you have an affiliate sign up link that I could use?

    What happens to the asset if a trader does not put a SL and doesn't use leverage and the same gap scenario happen?

    • @SocialTrading
      @SocialTrading  Před 3 lety +1

      The asset will drop in price in their portfolio, but it definitely won't be as big off a drop if they're not using leverage. Without leverage, the gap-down might not even hit their stop loss (depending on where they set it). Very often the gaps get 'filled' in future, meaning the price can go back to re-test the price the asset was at before the gap occurred... which is good news for anyone who got caught out by a gap down. Having said this though, it would be a good idea to read that Investopedia page I was looking at though, as there are different types of gaps which can occur and some point toward overreactions in the market where the gap may be filled, but others may point towards the breaking of a trend and future price movements in the same direction, which might make holding onto the asset after a gap a riskier proposition.

    Can you talk about setting the SL to secure the profits ? So puting your SL at ur current (profitable ) position cuz you don't want to it to go any lower and choosing trailing stop. Do gaps take your profits also lower and can be closed much lower than what u wanted to secure them for? Im nervous to lock in profits in this way because it seems to be random how it closes and may (?) close much lower than what u established. Its this the same thing that happens with gaps ?

    Another great video Tom you have alleviated some of my fears and I've now noticed on shares that there is no movement out of hours 👍👍.... If I copy a trader Slow and steady for example. I'm presuming the copy traders have "out of hour trading facilities" so they are much less likely to run into a gap down, bringing their followers into a loss. Is what I'm saying true ?

    • @SocialTrading
      @SocialTrading  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks :) Gaps down due to out of hours movements are really very rare to be honest, so it's unlikely this will effect most people, unless they're in the habit of trading using leverage around earnings season, or at other times of great volatility. Some of the traders we copy are probably watching the out of hours prices, and reacting accordingly, but they can't trade out of hours on eToro as far as I'm aware.. It's really going to be part of their strategy to understand the risks of these sorts of situations and trade accordingly beforehand - to hopefully not get into the mess in the first place ... I think* :)

    Hi Social Trading Vlog, Let me begin by echoing Timur. You have an excellent teaching/coaching style. That's coming from a teacher! Cheers for sharing and now for some questions. Maybe you can help? What would you say are the three most common pit falls for a new and very inexperienced person signing up. My account should be verified soon. I'm still research more before I make a copy/copies! I shall only put in what I can do without! Not than I'm loaded! I have two more questions if you will. While reading peoples strategies I noted they say, minimum copy amount, ideal amount etc, but some also say they look for a return in over two years. So don't expect anything earlier. How does someone new, about to copy know what period of the 2 year cycle they are at? Separate to you spread your copiers over different parts of the world, one in Euro, USD and GDP. Is that worthwhile in terms of diversity and markets? Any advice welcome.

      I would, yeah - the only time i worry about stop losses is in cryptos or highly volatile markets where the price can swing down and back up 20% in a single day. I worry that if I set my SL too tight, it may just keep getting triggered by the 'normal ' volatility of the market, and locking in my losses... It changes from country to country, so always bets to find out the tax rules where you live. They really do vary.

    how do you pay your leverage fees or do they take it auto. i am a noob and prob should take his advice but i am a bit of a smartass and have used max levergae on gold for the month i have been trading however do far i have made money but didnt notice any fees being deducted. would rather clear it per month if its not auto. started etoro on 30 of sept n have done over 200 trades. 182 trades in gold at 89% profitable. should i continue or stop. how long before i can stop saying i just got lucky with gold and say i know what i am doing. (this month is my very first month of trading in my life so a little unsure about somethings)

    Hey Tom, quick question if you don't mind! Ive now gotten to the point where I am applying for the popular investor program. I know things are different now since you were part of the program but do you know how long it usually take for them to approve or decline your request? And do they send you an email or anything to let you know of their decision? Thanks again man, Adam

    Great video, what do you think about new rule where we need to invest $500 minimum in non EU ETF and is also now a cfd on etoro? Seems to me all ETF on etoro falls into this category so ETF not an option anymore unless you have $500 to invest as a minimum!!!!

    • @SocialTrading

      its not a great development really... I used etfs as a buy trade with no leverage didnt incurr any rollover fees.. I mentioned it in my gold trading vid. thats not possible now, which is a real shame. I dont know why its changed - not sure if its an etoro decision or a regulatory new rule. either way, its really unfortunate I think...
      heres the gold vid. its only a tiny bit of the video though...

      Hi - thanks :) They just changed the way a whole swathe of non-EU ETFs are classified a couple of weeks ago. We used to be able to trade them as the real underlying asset, and not incur any overnight or weekend fees, but now, they're CFDs and we have to pay the overnight fees on them. I'm not sure why it was changed - I imagine it's probably a regulatory change, but I don't know.

    I found your channel and I thank you because I found myself in the same situation you described, now I know why, but the opposite also happened to me, that is, it closed me when it was profitable despite the take profit was set high, the take profit on google was at 10,000 dollars and it closed me at 11 dollars why?

    • @SocialTrading
      @SocialTrading  Před rokem +1

      Wow, I'm really not sure of that one... Best to ask eToro directly as there maybe something you're missing. It happened to me too with DB shares quite a few years ago, when i briefly tried to trade manually. The trade was closed, and I had no idea where it had gone, and I had more money in my account. Turns out there'd been some positive news overnight and it blew straight past my TP when the stock opened and closed the trade. Took ages to figure out what had happened.

      if thr trade keeps going down and you've got a "buy" trade open, then eventually it will hit your stop loss and the trade will close i think.
