- In and out, in and out! After a few back and forths Billi finally gave me a reason for the feline indecision 🤷🏼♀️⠀

Billi is a female domestic shorthair, she's 12 years old, her favorite word is mad. Inspiration from Hunger4Words (check her out on IG).

I... I think we finally have an answer about why cats go out and then immediately change their mind.
At least one reason for their flip-flopping has been confirmed, the outside being too noisy..... Now we just need to confirm whether or not if too wet, too dry, too hot, too cold, too windy, too calm, etc are viable reasons too lol
Maybe this is why they like to hide in boxes as well?
impossible
For my cat it's either too windy, the weather isn't right (snowy or rainy), or she wanted me to go outside with her.
that and they freak out when cars with headlights on pass by, poor cats....
Poor sensitive cat ears.
Can’t go outside or listen to Hamilton
That's right! She did not like it when mom was listening to Hamilton! LOL
I imagine that autotuned rapping was confusing to her. The words come too fast to understand and they sound funny.
Lol
Nah, that’s what’s called ‘taste’.
*shakes paw at Lin-Manuel Miranda*
She is definitely sensitive to sounds. How sweet that she comes to you for "pets" or basically comfort from what is bothering her. 💗
Almost all domestic cats are. Their hearing is 12 times more sensitive than ours.
WTF DOES ABEPD MEAN
@@eebu4053 heh?
@@kukui79 and dogs
One of my cats will go into the bedroom and shut the door if he wants to sleep and the tv is too loud. Of course, he can't open the door back up (my last two cats could do so) so it's a bit problematic!
As much as I try to interpret my cat's body language and actions and communicate as consistently as I can, this made me wonder about a lot of the little details I'm missing or getting wrong even.
Yep.
I agree
Just use this simple logic;
If your cat doesn't meow or shows signs of discontent / frustration, you're doing the right thing. Cats are quite adept and straightforward in telling you what they want.
(the one exception are depressed / sick cats who often won't give you any clues about how miserable they are. But those are thankfully the exception)
@@boooster101 I don't disagree. What has occurred to me is that, now that Billi has additional ways of communicating with her huMom, Billi is incentivized to "speak up" more. Billi can say that a noise is bothering her, instead of us, as humans, assuming her discontent at going outside being weather. It doesn't change, necessarily, what you can do about it, but just knowing there's a problem is a breakthrough.
@@saoirsevicteoiria2759 exactly, most people just assume their cat is being fickle, indesicive and annoying with the going in and out constantly. Not many would be able to tell you specifically that they do want to go outside but the noise is bothering them
I love that she answers why she didn’t want outside. She’s amazing. And, mom is amazing too! To be patient and receptive to what she’s trying to communicate. 🥰
Yeah! 😳 That was amazing! She's taking leaps instead of steps now lol
Maybe she even just wanted the door open to hear better.
@@kellyalves756 I don't think so. We can turn on and off lights in the house and turn on and off the music. Some cats think we can change the weather outside or turn off the noise outside. Eventually Billi will probably understand that she can't change things "outside".
if only extroverts would believe us introverts that ouch outside noise and ouch outside angry ppl. maybe we should get some of those buttons XD
@@HisameArtwork ahahahah true
The fact that she can tell you why she did not want to stay outside and why she asked you again explains so much about why cats go in and out so much sometimes! There must be noises that hurt their ears so they come in, but they still want to go out.
That's something that I've heen nagging my parents about. Like noone in this household would ever willingly get a parrot bc they're noisy and yet we forget that we're the noisy ones compare to sensitive ears of out cats. Also the fact that cats interact in barely audible chirps unless they need to meow for human attention. "Don't be so loud, you'll make Marshmallow upset" They're little creatures with gentle little ears.
@@taritangeo4948 Well, chirps and very loud meows when meeting other strange cats or finding mate.
I really find it funny when she runs to the door faster than you do haha. It shows that she actually knows what the buttons means
Nah it's only a cat
@@welcometolife4237 Yea and they can connect buttons with following actions, thats simple
Dogs can learn hundreds of words, I wonder how many cats can learn.
@@bekindist maybe a thousand 😂 but they’d probably only use the “food” and “mad” buttons often
@@thestrangeandstupidone8116 That sounds about right. "Snack" and "play" are the only words mine responds to. That and when I tell her "no" it always makes her meow back with extra attitude, I know she's cussing me out in kitty language😂
It feels so weird watching a cat household completely devoid of meows, but at the same time there's this air of sophistication around Billi and her buttons.
Hope ouch noise go away, and happy Billi be had.
Cats often meow just to try to communicate what they want to humans, so the buttons kind of replace the need to meow
Mine usually tries to communicate non-verbally for most things. A lot of it is him sitting there staring at me and sometimes exhaling sharply to get my attention.
My cat refuses to make any sound at any time for any reason. No idea why.
@@ashleyw9111 clearly your cat has a high opinion of your intelligence, too bad it seems he's overestimating your ability to speak cat 😂
@@ARVash My cat, Ren, was the same but recently he has learned to meow when he wants something. Took him 5 years, I think he is a slow learner. Snowy is a fast learner and can stand on her hind legs to push a door open or pull a door open (not from the handle)
"I can't control the noise"
Billie:...but why?
true haha
billie mad XD
I THOUGHT YOU CONTROLLED EVERYTHING??? MY LIFE IS A LIE
@@frenne_dilley you mean Hamilton "noise OUCH" :P
I'm convinced she should be the cat in a a movie trying to warn people to beware of something she can sense
This would honestly be an amazing setup and payoff in a movie. At first you think it's just establishing a personality quirk where one character talks to their cat through buttons, but then it comes back around to the cat being an active player in the story.
Yeah it would be cool if she hit the noise button when it was silent and then you get jump scared by whatever is making the noise you can’t hear.
And then in the end Billie saves the day
Scene: A woman reading a book downstairs in her living room. Its late at night. Cat comes running into the room, semi fuzzed out, and staring in the direction of the stairs. Girl says "Whats got you all spooked, hm?" Cat runs over to her buttons and presses "Mad" "Noise" "Away" "Help" and stares towards the staircase again. The woman watches her intently, confused and concerned. A door is heard slamming on the second floor.
The woman and her cat are the only ones home..
@@socklips7655 yes... lol love it
I have auditory hypersensitivities too, so I feel Bili's pain.
Me too. Ouch noise all the effing time.
Yep. I have hyperacusis caused by hearing damage. Loud noises can be painful.
I hope noice canceling technology can make your life easier !
@@Revengeur72 That's just more noise.
@@sgtsaltstick2729 I find it sometimes helps, depending on the environment I’m in. It just blurs into white noise that is easier to tune out then a bunch of unorganised chaos
As someone with auditory processing issues and sensitive ears due to nerve damage, "ouch noise" is absolutely a mood. I feel you, Billie 😔
Damn, here I've been so critical of cats who can't seem to make up their minds about what they want, when it might be an environmental issue I'm not even aware of. Now I feel bad 😥
Hey could you keep it down there? My cat is complaining about your noise!
Lamp can you imagine saying this and having actual proof
Billi needs a cabin in the woods where it's quiet.
I saw that movie. Id bet on the cat
So do I lol
@@That.Lady.withtheYarn which movie?
But her mom will still listen to Hamilton 😂
Poor Billi, hope Billi feels better from those pets! Outside noise can be annoying..
Poor Billie’s ears. IndyRed cat won’t go out if there is too much noise either.
It's hard on any kid when they realize their parents can't fix everything.
My cat does the same thing. He'll go outside despite being really cold and then he'll want to go right in, but when I ask him if he wants to go back out, he runs to the door and goes outside. He never learns.
I think they just live in hope. Or determination. 🤭
I had a cat that would demand to go out, and if it was cold, he’d turn around and hit me (usually on the leg) and grumble at me like it was my fault. Like I intentionally made it cold just to ruin his morning. Then he’d go pout under the bed for about 5 minutes, then he’d come back out and demand to go outside again and do it all over again.
If I told him “No, it’s cold outside!” he’d make an angry sound at me, then turn his back and flick his tail to make sure I knew he was mad.
Mine seems convinced that just because it was too cold and snowy 5 minutes ago doesn't mean it still is now, even though he can clearly see nothing has changed.
@@Annie_Annie__ Mine always looks up at me with that wanting look she does. I'm pretty sure like you, she thinks I've made it cold, or rainy etc and I'm choosing not to make it warm for her. It's the same look she gives when she wants the aircon/heater on. I think the aircon gods have really confused her on just how much power we have over the weather.
@@kovi6203 Exactly. I live in Texas and a couple weeks ago we were without power for 4 days. It got down to freezing temperatures inside the house at night, even though I’m in south Texas where we can go years without it ever hitting freezing, and when it does, it’s usually only for a couple hours. It was *rough*!
My poor cat Gus was very confused why we had to all snuggle up under every blanket we owned to attempt to stay warm all of a sudden. It was probably the first time in his life that he’s been genuinely cold and he was NOT impressed. He seemed to blame my husband. He wouldn’t cuddle up with him, and kept glaring at him. Gus seems to think my husband is the temperature god and that he failed in his duties for a random week.
Though, he blamed me when there was ice in his water dish. He was not happy about that at all. He kept yelling and fussing at me about it.
So I guess my husband is the weather god, but I’m the water god? But normally, when nothing is going wrong, Gus thinks he’s the god of the house and should be worshipped as such. That week might’ve caused poor Gus an identity crisis.
I honestly don't know how you can do anything, I would want to just hug and kiss and cuddle Billi all day. She just looks so soft and cuddly.
Whenever I have to interact with the outside world I often echo Billi’s words “ouch noise”. Same girl, same.
The way Billi looks at the cam when she hits the buttons is sooooo cute. Its like she's trying to have a conversation
the way she walks away to think about what she wants to say!! i love seeing her and stella take a second to process how to convey what they’re thinking it’s just so inspiring to me 💗
Years ago my family had a cat that loved to be outside, she'd beg to go out in the winter but would do a double take once the freezing air hit her nose, she'd look up at me and meow then skulk back into the house to find a warm spot. not even an hour later the process would repeat, she was hoping now it would be warmer outside....
Maybe someone was playing the Hamilton soundtrack outside?
So funny!
That made my sad as well. Looking forward to a nice, quiet spring for Billi with no ouch noise.
awww Poor Billi wants to go outside but the noise hurts her ears ;(
Maybe she heard something alarming outside? Like “did you hear that? It was coming from outside, what was it?” “Ouch noise outside”
"Billi" in Hindi literally means cat.
You should call in a noise complaint and tell them your cat told you the noise was hurting her ears! You wont look like a crazy cat lady, I promise.
Here in California, they wouldn't bat an eye.
I love how she's careful with her paws around the buttons, when she doesn't want to say anything. She doesn't want to conwey false information
I think that she needs some more buttons. She has a much larger vocabulary than the words represented by those buttons.
Maybe like to loud and maybe some for the different toys billi has
She has buttons for the specific toys. Too many buttons would have diminishing returns. It would get harder for her to remember. I think ouch noise describes loud perfectly well.
@@firegaze21 yea i do wonder how bunny the dog remembers all her words locations, it looks like she has atleast 50 buttons if not more. I wonder if she can actually read?
Disagree, this is already a lot of buttons for her right now, she's just about catching up. I think they should stick with these buttons until they're learned fully before adding new ones.
It will take her a long time to fully (within reason) grasp the meaning of some of these words, let alone what meaning they take on in combination with other words, and in different sentences. That's on top of memorising where they all are (remember, she can't read), even I would take forever with that if they weren't labelled.
Yeah, I think she’s doing pretty good. She’s getting better at combining buttons to make herself understood, which is what is wanted now. Making her own phrases like “ouch noise” is perfect.
Along with the fact that Billi can’t read, she also didn’t learn these buttons from the time she was a baby like Bunny the dog did. Billi was full grown when she started. It’s hard enough to learn a new language as an adult, let alone the concept of language.
I love that you kiss her head after putting her harness on
same, she does it every time
That was so adorable 😻
Now i understand that the guy who sings loud while holding his mad cat is animal abuse
Meanwhile my cat sleeps peacefully in his cat tree next to my desk while I'm yelling at a game and he's fully at peace lol.
But all cats are different, mine just doesn't care about loud noises or else he'd just go downstairs.
I swear I saw her nod when you asked if the noise was too loud, what a smart kitty
I love that she asks if there's anything mommy can do. At least, that's how I take it. She went back up, peered at mommy and said "noise noise".
All like "You humans seem to have a button for everything, is there a button for that?" and upon hearing the negative she was like "Dang... Oh well."
"Mum, go outside and tell them to stop being so noisy!"
I totally get Billi....I feel the same way when there's loud noises outside (especially the days when the gardners decide to use the leaf blower!)
It hurts my soul when she says ouch!!! Poor baby!!! 🙏🐕🕊😇❤️
I love the way she walks when she approaches the buttons. She has made up her mind about saying something, and turns and walks determinedly to the board.
Great behavioral lesson for humans in this video! She is teaching us. Uncomfortable noise is a good explanation for the inside/outside cat dilemma
I love everytime you put the outside harness on her, you finish the assembly with a kiss on the head. It's such a pure little action that I've seen you do in every single video where you put on the harness and I love it so much.
🥰🥰
I find the level of communication you have with this feline absolutely incredible. Just amazing to watch. (Liked, Subscribed.)
edit: I wonder what dolphins would have to say if they learned a touch pad system like yours? Probably a lot of noise complaints as well.
That would be really interesting to see!
I bet sex would be a bit of a running theme.
Dolphins can actually be taught to speak real human words, still not sure how I feel about it
@@LilKitLen well. not really no. There was a long running experiment during worl war (i think 2) where they tried to teach dolphins the english language because scientists thought that if you could teach a dolphin to speak, you could teach it to aliens too. (yes, crazy)
They had 3 dolphins and after MONTHS they did not speak. The male dolphin however fell in love with the female scientist and she had a sexual relationship with him. It was only after that, that he was able to "speak" but no more than maybe "hello". So while dolphins may be smart, they are not able to speak and they are sex addicted assholes.
@@JuuChan I have actually read extensively about this study before and it is not quite how you've been lead to believe it is. The entire thing was purposefully exaggerated around the "sex" element, even though that was an honestly non-significant part, nor was it even remotely close to other concerns you could better have about the study. This is a very good (if a little long) article to learn more about it www.theguardian.com/environment/2014/jun/08/the-dolphin-who-loved-me
That’s amazing! I can’t believe she understands it’s the noise and she is able to communicate that with you!

Is there a laser pointer? Some kind of moving dot on the screen
It’s the sun reflecting off the camera lens
u r right Jarrad. u can clearly see between 0:45 and 0:54 that the cat is guided to the button with a laser pointer. You can actually see it happening multiple times. the cat prolly gets some sweet candy after she followed the laser pointer and pushed a few random buttons. Must be some awesome lens if u can keep such a sharp dot when u move ur camera 90 degrees counter clockwise LOL.
@@BilliSpeaks just how dumb do you think we are?
@@richardbottom9843 You in particular? Lower intelligence than average.

Next she'll be going to the neighbors with her buttons and complaining.
You notice that Billi & Bunny the button pushing dog will both walk away & circle around, thinking no doubt & return to the buttons? Hmm
I can’t seem to get enough of watching Billie talk to you. It’s pretty amazing.
Sometimes I wish communication between people can be this simple. Straightforward and no mixed signals. The cat is smart to know how to convey his thoughts to his mom.
Love your videos!
How do you teach concepts like ‘later’ or ‘noise’? I can see how food and pets work, or maybe yes/no, but I’m really curious how less concrete terms can be learned.
Probably using 'no' and 'later' when Billie asks for something, then giving it to her after some time.
Idk about 'later' but the word I've taught my cats is 'Wait' and I use it in the same meaning as 'later' . One of my cats is on a strict diet due to his old age/health and when he would ask for food too early, I'd tell him "Wait, ok? Wait.". He understands this and goes to lie beside the food bowl patiently until it's time (old cat, very chill dude). I also use Wait in the regular meaning (like how dogs are trained to Wait before they are allowed to eat), which both of them understand, so I believe her Later goes through this way too.
So am I the only one who noticed the light used to bring the cat to the buttons ?

Do animals even have a dominant "hand"?
Most animals don't have the fine control we humans have.
@@jasperzanovich2504 Polar Bears are usually left pawed.
Cats are generally ambidextrous, so I’d guess so.
@@jasperzanovich2504 when my cat encounters a door she has to pull open, she can only pull with her right paw. If she has to use her left paw, she's stuck. Idk tho that might just be my cat she's kinda weird in general
@@jasperzanovich2504 Cats do have a right or left-pawed preference, but it's much closer to an even split than it is with humans.
Turns out this cat just thinks it gets different responses like petting and going outside but the human finds connections and its just confused and has no idea whats going on. It just hits a button and rolls the dice.
Cats' hear more than us or dogs at the hi end of the pitch scale. Billi & his family are teaching us so much about cat's behaviours.
