  • Upon popular request, we have deconstructed a Solovair boot. It's one of the better made leather boots compared to the ones we've reviewed so far.

    Tanner, when cutting shoes apart please also mention the construction type. Docs are vulcanised, which means they can't be resoled because they use a very strong adhesive to join the upper and the outsole. Solovairs are goodyear welted, which means the use a welt, stitched into a gemming inside the boot, to stithe the outsole on the welt in another part. This means you can take the outsole off and put another on without damaging the uppers. Also, the leather piece you saw on the inside is called the inner counter cover, and is used to stop your heels from rubbing into the stitches. Rose Anvil has a channel where he cuts apart many boots and shoes you whats on the inside. You could also check it out

      @unachimba9 Před rokem +9

      Yeah... there is a lot more to boots than a leather bag (or waller, belt etc). Lasting, welt, the sole etc. Most of that can be reduced to components and labor once you know the costs... but I think there is so much going on in boots that is unique to them

    • @chinatownboy7482
      @chinatownboy7482 Před 11 měsíci +3

      Dr. Martens uses a "hot knife" which melts the sole onto the shoe. However, when you take apart a pair of Dr. Martens, there is a gemming. You can remove the Dr. Martens welt, and stitch on a new welt, stitch on a midsole, then add a lug sole.

    • @Enrico-
      @Enrico- Před 10 měsíci +5

      This statement is false. Docs and Solovairs are built the same way. They have a PVC welt attached with a goodyear machine and a PVC outsole, melted to the welt. Neither is vulcanized.

    Growing up in the 90s, I had always wanted a doc martens pair. Now in my mid30s, I bought my very first pair recently. I wish I could’ve watched this before I bought one. Its sad I just had learned that its not made like it was before. Tbh I dont know solovair but after knowing, I could’ve bought solovair. I live in japan so many thats one reason I have not heard solovair. Thank you for this review! Taking notes for buying one in the future!

      In 2020 in college, my friend was stressed that she had spent a lot of money on a pair of Doc Martens boots
      We pointed out that they are supposed to be good quality, so she has probably made a good investment as long as she wears them and doesn't buy more shoes she doesn't need
      Then a few months later I learned that Doc Martens is not a high quality brand anymore!
      It sucks how these brands which were known for high quality have recently been dropping their quality a lot, but not their prices. So consumers still think they are paying for high quality items, but in reality we are being scammed!

    I agree their waxed leathers are good, slightly thicker and water resistant! Their acorn monkey boot from their Solovair Lifestyle Collection is really good, calf leather and leather lined inside and out - better than your boot here. Also, the urban hiker in greasy leather is a bit of a gem I think

    You didn’t mention one of the most important items - it has a wooden shank. The Doc Martens have none which affects comfort when wearing the shoes over a long period.

    • @oight
      @oight Před rokem +1

      can anyone actually cite any evidence that a wooden shank helps with comfort? unless you were mountaineering, which you wouldn't be wearing such boots if you want to do it properly as you'd get mountaineering boots. or, if you were working in a manual labour job where you need steel shanks, not wooden - there are inconclusive scientific results to show anything about a wooden or even plastic shank helping that. there is a lot of debate on plastic shanks perhaps helping with running, but that's still inconclusive and the material is more favourable as it's flexible rather than wooden.
      there are tons of journalist/corporate articles claiming that wooden shanks are better with absolutely no scientific sources, but that's it. there's a poorly written/short wikipedia article where they've not cited any study to support that claim.
      I suspect that for the purpose of these boots, a wooden shank offers very little difference except anecdotal experiences. obviously, the consumer is not going to know all this background as it's hard unless you work in a niche environment/know someone who works with issues like that. I think they're just as overpriced as Doc Martens, £180 is marked up no matter what different PR techniques they use to convince people it's not. I'm sure they're still good boots, but it is a big brand for boots at the end of the day and likely pays a lot for marketing them.

      Ive got a pair of Doc Martin my Dad Baught in the early 90s made by them. They are still pretty much perfect. The leather has aged amazingly. Had to get a cobbler to replace the sole but thats to be expected. More moderns Docs i got for myself where falling apart and looking tired within a few years. The Quality is still as good these days at Solivair as they still use the same molds and cutters as they did then in the same factory.

    • @oight
      @oight Před rokem +4

      I seriously doubt they are much better, I think £180 is still a mental marked up price and there's nothing really to show they're better except some marketing gimmicks. They're probably just around the same quality. Both are overpriced.

    IMO solovair boots/shoes are much better made than even the made in england Doc Martens. The leather is better quality, has a wooden shank - Doc have none these days - has a more bulbous shape (truer to the pre-1990s Docs, and a harder wearing outer sole. Current day docs start off feeling squishy and nice but soon lose their comfort. Solovairs on the other hand get more comfortable with time. Agree about that PU/PVC liner at the top. Either use real leather or get rid of it - some of their models dont have it. I would love to see a premium version with inner leather liner and maybe a leather footbed XD.
