Ireland’s call is not Ireland’s anthem. Amhrain na bhfiann is the Republic of Ireland’s anthem. Ireland’s call is a more inclusive song taking into account players from the North of Ireland. Very hard topic for Darren Cave to discuss and hats off trying give his view, respect for that. But he is wrong in terms of Amhrain na bhfiann being a south of the border national anthem, Amhrain na bhfiann belongs to all Irish citizens north and south of the border that hold an Irish passport. I believe he should of taken the view, if your from a Unionist background in the North of the border, Amhrain na bhfiann is not your national anthem if you choose to be, which should be respected. Half of the people in North of border would come from a Nationalist/Republican background and align themselves with the Amhrain na bhfiann and the other half of people from the North of the border would be from a Unionist background most likely not aligning with Amhrain na bhfiann, saying this is a very general view and isn't always the case for both communities.

Why do people call themselves British when Britain isnt a country!?? In football and Rugby there is no British team, its Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales. Britain is a landmass containing three countries. Neither Ireland or the North are in Britain. The concept of nationality is based on individual countries and each nation has a capital. Britain does not have a capital. Google Great Britain and the information states that GB is a landmass not a nation..

M2CW... As an Irish man and a rugby fan when you have players/supporters from one island that have affinities to 2 nations you have to have respect both sides of the coin, playing Amhrán na bhFiann and Ireland's Call is a way of achieving that. The only issue that I have is not playing Amhrán na bhFiann at away games, when you see La Marseillaise / Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau / Flower of Scotland and God Save the Queen getting bellowed out by the fans and players at games for me it gives them a leg up on us (Irish that is) as the emotion and pride that they have singing their national anthem or nations song is something that Iirish fans singing Irelands Call simply cant aspire to the same levels of emotion, BUT I totally see why this is the choice. I'd keep the principle but have a better song...

Ireland’s call is a decent song but it’s not our anthem. I like having the boys up north not because they’re good at rugby but because it unifies us. I just think the sport of rugby should be enough without having to pander to them with a made up anthem. I don’t expect them to sing our anthem I just find it frustrating that when we play abroad we can’t even sing our actual anthem. It’s also annoying that we can’t even be represented by our actual flag. As I said I love having the boys up north play with us but in the boxing none of these changes apply so why rugby?

For me personally i cannot fully warm to the Ireland rugby team because of Ireland's call. Its not and never was the anthem of Ireland.
Identity maybe nuanced in Northern Ireland but it is not in the Irish Republic and never was but yet our anthem is being cast aside for the sake of political correctness.
We are a very proud small nation and we could be on the verge of winning something major in this Rugby WC. But for me if this does happen (and that's a big if) the whole occasion will be sullied by the playing of Ireland's call before the game.
Can anyone think of any scenario when a country potentially on the cusp of sporting greatness, has their anthem denied to them because of political posturing?
I just wish we had a republic of Ireland rugby team, then i could fully embrace the team.
If this team win then great, but it will be no sporting life-changing moment for me. Is Éireannach mé🇮🇪☘️
