  • May 27, 2014 - See the start up and take off the National Capitol Squadron of the CAF 1945 Grumman TBM-3E Avenger N40402/Bu/Aer 91426. Col. John Fuentes, pilot.
    The TBM Avenger that has been housed with the Hagerstown Aviation Museum aircraft for the past year has flown off to it's new home with the National Capitol Squadron of the CAF in Culpeper, VA. The museum was honored to take the TBM "under it's wing" so that the final restoration work could be completed indoors. Our new friends Clifford Ellis and Bill Butler were an inspiration for the time and effort they put toward preparing the TBM for it's first flight. Congratulations to everyone involved with the TBM project over the years! You are commended for your efforts to preserve our aviation heritage! We look forward to seeing the TBM in the air for years to come.

      Agreed! The engineering from the 40's was totally epic. That was my favorite part!

      Agreed, pretty ingenious for it's time; so good Grumman incorporated it to the E-2 Hawkeye/ Greyhound.

    • @samuelbennett1717
      @samuelbennett1717 Před 3 lety

      If you are referring to the ball turret there was only one 50 cal machine gun mounted there. Avengers never had a dual or quad mount. Early models had one .30 cal machine gun in the nose and a rear facing .30 cal machine gun that was operated by the radioman/bombardier. Later versions had .50cal machine guns one in each wing and the .30 cal machine gun in the nose was removed. Towards the end of the war the rear facing ventral machine gun was also removed because it was nearly useless.

      @FawfulDied Před 4 lety +10

      SNJs and TBMs, and most Navy planes of the period, do not use flaps during takeoff with normal load. Flaps are only used during landing and when heavily loaded.
