I' would be pleased to listen to a good lecture about suspense, supernatural and mistery in Jane Eyre.

There's also a similarity to Eliza Parson's The Castle of Wolfenbach, in where the main protagonist, Matilda discovers Victoria, the countess, locked up in the tower but instead forms a friendship with her.

The strange thing in that Jane is only removed from being suitable in social status to Rochester by one generation. Her mother would have been suitable and probably was of a similar age to Bertha, whom he did marry. If one unfortunate marriage could remove the child from the "marriage market," no wonder there was so much pressure to make advantageous marriages.

I'm rather surprised this needs to be pointed out, but I am glad someone has mentioned it. Jane Eyre is firmly based in realism, but the old tales are always there to influence the characters.

@@micaylab1 depends which version. The original where beast is polite and gentlemanly is more Jane Eyre.
