  • In today's video, Dr Shave aka Brian from The Executive Shaving Company explains the differences between the 3 Muhle R89 razors.
    Muhle R89 Closed Comb Safety Razor:
    The Muhle R89 is now by some distance, our top-selling Double Edge Safety Razor.
    It's a beautifully engineered, closed comb double edge safety razor that's an absolute joy to use. With its engraved handle, and perfect dimensions and weight, the Muhle R89 has been expertly designed for control and comfort.
    The closed comb head is ideal for beginners as the blade is not too exposed however it delivers a very effective shave. Experienced DE users will appreciate this razor while newbies to DE shaving will regret not buying one earlier.
    Easily confused with the Edwin Jagger 89 - whisper it, Jagger use the same head, only the handles differ.

    Muhle R89 Grande Closed Comb Safety Razor (Large)
    Launched in Autumn 2011, this beautifully engineered, big boy, closed comb double edge safety razor is an absolute joy to use.
    With its long, engraved handle, the Muhle Grande R89 has been expertly designed for control and comfort.
    The Muhle Grande as the name suggests is for guys who prefer a heavier razor. The shave is typically Muhle, nice and comfortable yet close.

    Muhle R89 TWIST Closed Comb Safety Razor
    The Muhle R89 TWIST is an updated version of the R89 which was originally launched in 2010.
    The TWIST cap can be released by twisting the end knob at the bottom of the handle. This makes changing blades simple, quick and safe. The TWIST also benefits from a longer and thicker handle compared to the R89.
    With its engraved handle, the Muhle R89 TWIST has been expertly designed for control and comfort. The closed comb head is ideal for beginners as the blade is not too exposed however it provides an extremely close shave.

    I switched to DE shaving a few months ago after over 40 years of the usual cartridge style razors. I bought an R89 Grande after watching many videos, including some of yours, and I couldn´t be happier with it. Thanks for the recommendation!
    As I have a very tough beard/sensitive skin combination, the R89 is great for daily use. I later bought the R41 (head only) for heavier growth, which works wonders - fewer passes = less irritaion. They work great (for me) with sharper blades such as Feather or BIC platinum chrome. I would recommend the R89 and R41 to anyone - they are solidly made and look good too.
    Thanks for all of your videos!

    Fairly new to DE Shaving, bought a standard R89 (Amazon had a Deal, sorry guys £27 delivered) Can agree with what Brian says here with regard to the standard handle, I don't mind it but wish I had bought either the Grande or the TWIST. With that in mind, and because I am in Glasgow, and crazy, I bought an R41 Twist from ES. Finally worked up the courage to shave with it this morning...
    The R41 I have only tried Mild Blades (Astra SP) - I know I'm a weegie from the southside but c'mon.... a few weepies but down to my technique. Not 100% Sold on the R41/Astra combo but think that's a technique issue.
    NOTE: They are very different razors, as said on 300000 reviews/youtube, don't shave the same way with the R41 as you would a Milder razor like the R89!!!
    The R89 on Astra Blades, did a nice "follow up"/tidy pass about 10 minutes ago. No weepies or cuts, unlike this morning. Will be interesting to try both on Feather Blades(!).
    I digress, the R89 is a great starter/daily razor, IMO a keeper. I've shaved with the R89 using Both Astra SP (mild-ish) and Feather (NOT MILD) - Must say for a standard shave, I prefer the Feather blades on it. You might want a different handle (either Muhle) or 3rd party... the Twist or Grande would be my choice too, knowing what I know now. For an ABSOLUTE beginner I'd take the Twist, less bits to get out of line when loading. You can trim the side tabs on the blade so as not to jab fingers when rummaging in bag, or buy a blade guard. TBH I jabbed fingers more than face.
    I now don't need to shave for at least a week if not more.
    Hope this is useful.
    Andrew

      @@ExecutiveShaving Thank you Brian. Hope it helps somebody. I can add the following being further down the road a bit:
      I went and bought a Razorock SLOC purely for its top cap, and the fact it came with a Bulldog 3rd party handle.
      R89 - Now uses the top cap from the R41 (I suspect that are the same anyway) and the Bulldog longer heavier handle which is grippier than the standard Muhle one, an ideal setup if not using a Grande/Twist IMO. Perfect for the "Tidy up pass" or bits that you have issues with.
      R41 - Ninja'd with the SLOC cap. DO NOT do this if you are a beginnerr, it changes the shave significantly. Peeling your face (and eating your children), caution urged, liability not undertaken etc etc. Very nice with a Mild blade (Curerently trying Derby)
      Razorock has the R89 top cap and Muhle handle, poor thing - Parts bin special haha.
      Still trying out blades, Like the feathers, In my R41 they are a bit too much, but find the Astra's a bit 'Scratchy'. Derbys are ok but a bit on the mild side (nice for the tidy up though)
      Need to try Persona, Vokshod and others... Any recommendations?

    Now I can't decide, I read a lot about the Merkur 34C and how it good it is, now I think the Mohle R 89 Grande could be the best.
    I want one that can last for years and years.
    I remind about my grandfather shaving with a safety razor when I was very young, and he had a better looking skin than mine when I use my Mach 3, it was my first shaving machine when I was like 17 (before that my father bought me a Philips with battery, but my skin was all red and itchy when I shaved), I'm know 38 and I still use it.
    So I wanna make sure the safety razor can last at least the same time.

    • @ExecutiveShaving
      @ExecutiveShaving  Před rokem +3

      They are both excellent razors which should last a very, very long time! The main difference between them, is in the handles - the Muhle R89 Grande features a longer, engraved handle which allows for control and comfort, while the Merkur 34C has a smaller handle. This may be something for you to consider?

      Hi Jay, we believe that the R89 is amongst the best safety razor you can buy. Suitable for beginners and experienced DE shavers alike, it's expertly balanced and delivers a close and comfortable shave. Depending on the coarseness of your stubble and how often you shave, we would recommend pairing with a Personna or Feather blade. At £35, we think it's well worth the money!

    • @ExecutiveShaving
      @ExecutiveShaving  Před 2 lety

      To be perfectly honest with you, I have never noticed the razor being head heavy. No matter, even if it is, the user soon would learn to adapt accordingly.
      For the price point, it's very good value for money and it delivers mild yet efficient shaves.

      @@australian6983 it's all down to preference for the handles - the grande is longer and many with larger hands find this to fit better and easier in the hand. The grande is also weighted well to allow for a secure, controlled grip. Hope you get on well with it!

    How does the R89 compare to the 34c? Thanks!

    • @davesheppard8797
      @davesheppard8797 Před 3 lety +4

      I personally prefer the 34c. I found that the R89 made my face sore. Maybe it was just the wrong soap! I think it is down to personal choice. I have the 34c, R89 Rose gold, EJD89 and have just received a Rockwell 6c this morning which I am yet to use. I also have a broad arrow stamped (war department)open comb razor dated 1945. That is good for taking chunks of flesh off your face!! 😫😫. At present my set up is 34c, Feather blades and Arko soap. I love the Taylor's but it hates me and makes my skin burn, even the sensitive one! You won't go wrong with either of your choices. The EJ D89 (Edwin Jagger) has the same head as the R89. I hope this helps.
      Cheers,
      Dave.

    You should have mentioned the part of the razor that shaves which is not the handle, is the head: all of the 3 have an open comb design which will not shave all faces the same. This open comb is good for dense beards. Sparse hair faces will not do as well with this razor. Yes, it will do the job but at the expense of a few cuts and irritation. It is a razor for easy dense beards like yours likely with your hair all growing in the same direction but irregular hair growers will not do as well.
