Not a particularly clever joke, since Republicans make any b-level film or TV celebrity who smiles in their direction the President. In the last 45 years, all Republican Presidents have either been a film or TV celeb or a Bush, and closet celebrity worship and name recognition is the the right wing's substitute for policy
@@QuantumParticle It does, because I say the right is desperate for affirmation from Hollywood, not vice versa. If you can list a bunch of actors and reality show clowns who've been Democratic Presidents, I'll reconsider my comment

Jack Nicholson is so damn handsome even at this age. Oh man!!! His smile and his facial expressions ...Oh boy!!! Proud to be a die hard Nicholson fan!!!
In my opinion it was one of the best Oscars opening acts ever. Intelligent, smart and funny. Steve Martin is super profesionalist so timing is perfect, and everything is thoughtful. Look, how he looks at Nicole Kidman :)
The slap ruined it for me! Brought me back to 1972 when I escaped the man who abused me! Poor Chris had to just stand there….I ran for my life with my 4 children! No home,no $ ,no car… but I was free!
I remember watching this, and I thought that Steve Martin was hilarious. The next day, critics castigated him. I am obviously not the average person. Thank gawd.
Diane Lane was with Josh Brolin at this time. Legend has it he was outrageously jealous. She was nominated this night for her role in "Unfaithful", which is a film he had not liked her doing. Note how concerned she looks and looks over at him like, OMG, when Steve put her on that list. She was genuinely thinking, "Damn it, Steve, now I will have to deal with this asshole, later." A little over a year after this, he was arrested for domestic assault against her, but she didn't press charges.
Really? I did not know that. She should have left him and pressed charges the very moment he started becoming violent. No woman must stay in a bad relationship saying that "" he loves me- he won' t do it again- he will change- he promised !"" These bullies never change!!!
This just Feels like a complete Different era than today... its only 20 years ago but the people who where in their Prime Back than you just dont see so often anymore ...
From some AFI Lifetime achievement awards to Oscars back in those days, here I am, introduced to "Steve Martin". I mean, that mostly straight face speaking casual still gets me anyway lol. And, Jack interacts his way, which actually adds the right kind of flavor and there we go, the net laughter ages very well. All in all, ol' cool people. Going for these types of clips is a genuinely entertaining journey I guess?!
I don't think people realize how funny that opening line.... It's not just some random poodle head... It's his own prized poodle calling himself gay as well
@@deathshead357 I wouldn't joke much about the real Mafia, this gay Mafia I've never heard of. Does it have anything to do with the lbgtqai Instagram cybernet creeps on the low gradually coming out at every social gathering or event?
You know what, Jack is the coolest guy in the room.
Always Baby!
Agree..like a Don......
I saw that video😂
Well played
Still THE COOLEST.
Jack didn’t get upset. Went right with it.
A pro. The man can handle anything.

Well of course!
@@lorenzomariani503 you're disgusting.
It's crazy how Steve Martin has looked exactly the same for so many damn years haha it's like he never ages
He aged once back in 1968
Because he always had white hair
Yeah the guy has looked perpetually 40 for like 30 years. I'm kidding of course but he has always looked great for his age.
He aged all at once, after a single weekend partying with John Belushi in the 70's.......
The greatest Oscar opening of all, with the very special participation of the phenomenal Julie Andrews!
Back when The Oscars was still funny and wholesome.
Don’t watch!
Jack did not get up and slap him! 🤣 ahhh the good ol days! ☺️
😂😂😂😂😂
Exactly!😂🤣
maybe if Steve had insulted his wife??
"Keep Jack's name out your freakin' mouth!" Just thought I'd keep it clean. 😂
Jack N. should get up and kiss him ...
That nod and thumb-up from Dame Julie Andrews. Classic! 😁
This monologue was way ahead of its time. Case in point “a movie star can be democrat...or skinny.”

What I love is how Steve Martin tries not to crack up at Nicholson's reaction.
Steve never "cracks up". He always remains a professional, serious comedian.
"If you would like a transcript of this show, simply write down everything we say"
Genius lol
In 2010, he said, “ If you’d like a transcript of this show then you really should get a life.”
Jack is king, happy to see Angelica Houston laughing with her ex!
I'd hate to imagine a world without Steve Martin.
2:55 Julie's reaction 👍😝....love her...got the most claps...everyone just loves her ♥.
And she’s still hot.

too gay
SO DAMN HOT!
Nigga u gay
Ummm no he isn’t
His glasses and devilish smile
Oh jack, I honestly miss you. You're what Hollywood is missing these days. That's probably the last time the Oscar's have had that much applause
Over the years, Steve Martin has always brought it when appearing on any show. One of the funniest comedians ever. Read his book on comedy.
Top notch. Hilarious, on the money on some topics, self-deprecating, and never mean or an insulting jerk. Class.
Ernest Borgnine! what a class act
I love seeing all these stars when they were young and killing the game. Ain't the same anymore
Julie Andrew’s reaction 👍🏻
If he added jack to the list, this would have been the best oscars ever.
Right!
Would have been too predictable.
Really heartwarming to see everyone just laughing along instead of getting all cocky like at the Golden Globes

He should have taken over as host for many years like Billy Crystal.
I like Steve Martin he's the genuine article. He isn't trying to play smart and funny he is smart and funny.
nah chris rock was the best
The Bicycle Man that was the greatest moment in TV history. Rock, the consummate professional. Pure class.
& on top of all that my Steve Martin is an agnostic!Good for him!👏👏🏼👏🏽👍💙
One of the greatest ever.Whew !!! I've been a fan his whole career.
Only 20 years ago, but it is a lifetime.
jack nickleson a genius
Steve Martin was born old.. I just couldn't get a single image or video of him being young..🤣🤣
1:56 "They can be straight"
*Shows Harrison Ford*
I cracked up
He looked prepared though?
Borgnine topped it all off with tha kiss! 😆👍😘
I laugh more in this three minutes than all the Oscars ceremony this year.

I've never seen a bad movie with Jack in it. He is like chocolate.
Same as tom cruise
One of the funniest guys ever.
Steve Martin may have won the Oscar, but Jack Nicholson won the thumbnail.
Intelligent with expert delivery. Can't say the same for every host...
Steve is a legend
I remember watching this, and I thought that Steve Martin was hilarious. The next day, critics castigated him. I am obviously not the average person. Thank gawd.
Are you saying critics are the average person? That makes no sense.
Critics very rarely represent the entire communities opinion. Especially when it's negative. Who the hell wouldn't find that monologue funny?
Critics live in the same realm as bankers, lawyers, insurance agents, Hollywood execs, politicians and rappers. Oh! And used car salesmen.
You know you did good when you upset the critics.

Great Video! Love it!
Amazing. Well presented. Funny jokes.

Yep. Said he could no longer memorize his lines so he called it a career. A great career.
He is almost 90 years old now :) That's crazy!

Back when this was decent and watchable!
Jack could identify 80% of the Beavers in the room blindfolded, with a mere sniff!
Oh my gosh I was hoping they would include Martin Short in that list SO bad 🤣
I remember this...Jack got pissed and ran up on stage and slapped Steve.....oh wait...that never happened....
"There are no losers here tonight, but we're about to change all that."
Wow Steve Martin, what a legend and Jack Nicholson! 😎😎
The thumbs up 😂
they are all so impressed with each other. They are in the club and you are not.
That's how it has always been they gotta play ball to get the trophies man
Great. Funny.
And now we just get Gervais and Rock. Bleqq!
2:02 jack nicholson 🤣
Oscars used to be very good , very entertaining and very funny but not anymore. Steve Martin is very funny , haven't seen his movie in a long while.

Original. He's just a Wild and Crazy guy!!
I don't like Steve Martin's comedy but he's a class act as a host. He manages to make it funny without going into the gutter.
That is great …
Sadly, you could not do a speech like this in 2023 anymore...
My god Jack Nickelson is alway's a top class act, amazing guy xD
Who's here for Jack? 😎
This was Hollywoods last gasp, used to be funny.
@2.52 madamoiselle belfam Diana Lane the camera doesn't do justice to her breathtaking beauty
Lol, all those ladies were gangsta until they saw Julie 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣.
And Julie holds her own against all of them. Always a good looking woman.
Back when the Oscars was a thing....
And it's noteworthy that while not the most exciting host of the Oscars, while Steve Martin was hosting, not one person was assaulted on stage.
