Amazon's $110 tablet is great and terrible

- Amazon’s Fire HD 8 tablet starts at $90 and goes up to $140 with a wireless charger bundle. It’s a Fire OS tablet that runs Android apps, but what it’s really meant for is watching Prime video, calling on Alexa, and reading Kindle books. It’s good at those things, but bad at everything else.

Do you wish there were more Android tablets to choose from?
No, I will pick an iPad or a windows tablet.
Yes
Absolutely, since windows x is coming annd surface duo android coming i expect not just android but win tablets.Hope they will be cheep.
LOLZ
Yes, definitely.
Dieter trying to not say Alexa is hilarious 😂😂😂
Google Assistant and Siri are the best......and they're global.
While Amazon is only "active" in the US and Alexa is terrible
Nicholas Nelson Siri is terrible as well.
@@nicholasnelson7365 who told you Amazon is US only? Amazon and Alexa are growing extremely fast here is India
Wait I'm confused is it Alexa or Echo?
I think it turned on in the end too
Basically your paying money for a portal to go to an online store
actually u paid the tablet..
You're paying for an Amazon ad
yep. thats how dependent on content and media we are
Or you pay for the tablet and remove the Amazon stuff off from there.
I mean it's a kindle. It's not even marketed as an android tablet and shouldn't be reviewed as such.
It only exists to sell amazon products, thats why its so cheap
Yeah, I doubt they even make money off of selling this hardware alone
The hardware cost would be minimal. Lenovo sells low end tablets at lower prices, and don’t have a platform like Amazon to find side revenue streams. What costs Amazon is setting up an ecosystem like this.
Yeah it's a loss leader. But it's good for us, because you can do stuff to it.
I bought one for 50$ during black Friday, I installed Playstore then t0rrent plus video player with 256G micro sd card. Also basic apps like CZcams ect.
It's been great for the price.
They make their money back with the store, media stuff and online storage.
They only give you 5gb for everything.
Dieter: "The Fire HD 8, it's gonna feel slower than your phone, even if your phone is a few years old."
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
They must be a troller
6:37 - “A faster charger makes you charge faster”, well done Dieter.
Haha
Lmao
I’d much rather just buy an older iPad model
You DONOT WANT TO BUY OLD IPADS. I mean like used iPad not a brand new old model. Anyone with used iPad knows the struggle
Shadman • 47 years ago • Updated spends on the used iPad
Shadman • 47 years ago • Updated just bought a used iPad Pro 10.5. Best purchase in years
Oozly *depends
@@MadristaSisam why? Cnat you factory reset it?
Yeah. Slow is fine for those purposes.
That screen?
No.
You totally left out that the Fire tablets are very durable, unlike an iPad.
Any tablet is more durable
Amazon:how is our tablet?
The verge: Great, but also greatn't
Dieter next week: I’m going to get divorced but also stay married.
Good one
That's breaking bad
Huge shout out to Dieter for bringing up "PSYCH" in his talk. PSYCH fans appreciate it :)
_Come on, son._
I actually want to buy this because it's slow. It fits into a mindful life. It does what I need, can fit perfectly on my kitchen table, maybe I'll use it to read some articles or watch a video, + Alexa
**Spider-Man theme song plays**
Flash a ROM
Flash a ROM
Buy the tablet and flash a ROM
Hardware for cheap
Disposable income
You can get rid of all the junk
You just... Need to flash a ROM
It depends. I don't think tablets see much XDA support.
I don't think the average consumer knows how to flash a rom and also wouldn't want to go through the hassle of doing it.
Is there a rom for the new fire 8? Last i checked only some of them could be rooted and the only rom was for a certian model of the fire 10 and that rom was an unoffical lineage os that people said was super buggy.
Why did I sing this to the Spider-Man theme song?
Reminds me of tablets in 2012
Thank you for saving me from buying, getting frustrated by, and then returning a 3rd Fire.
Sideloading is hacking now?
Hackerman time
I love Psych! It’s honestly a great show. Themed episodes, pineapples, and all that.
Loved my Nexus 7. Ah I miss that now.
Typing from it right now. Still great. As new as day one. I start to believe it's everlasting!
Andrea Cuozzo are you on a custom rom?
@@memebrother7083 nope. All stock. Android MM still works great.
Still have mine... very hard to part with it...
@@bkwalkabout really? Mine aged very well! Sometimes it freezes but for a tablet nothing dramatic. I factory reset it once a year tho.
That moment when you realize that zoom is one of the "essential apps" to have.....
I’m using FaceTime.. since I’m in. US and many people own an iPhone ( and hangouts ).
ha ha ha ha ha
Yea, exactly, funny stuff. Messengers to have are, like, Telegram, Signal and a few others. Without an option to install any of those, the device becomes useless (well, for anyone with half a brain anyhow. ;))
"Uh... Lexa"
Nice one.
The performance shouldn't be that bad. That is clearly bad optimization even for that price.
The FireOS UI is very heavy. Plus consider all the telemetry that Amazon has to be running on these things. Amazon's last true powerful tablets were the HDX series, long out of support but in many ways superior to these latest models.
While I've used Android phones for the past 8 years, I couldn't get into my Fire 8 two years back at all - it was just so irredeemably painful to use. Got myself an used iPad Pro for 350 and haven't looked back since - that thing is a joy to use :3
I've got four Kindle Fire tablets around the house (mostly Fire 7's, one Fire 8) and have found they're really great as semi-smart wall displays. I've taken all of the weather data and indoor room temperatures around the house, built a web page that displays indoor/outdoor temps, wind, wex forecast, etc. The Kindle Fires are velcro'ed to the wall in each room, connected to the net via wi-fi as a glorified time/temp display. Oh, and if you wait until Black Friday or Amazon Day you can get fantastic discounts - most of my Kindle 7's were $49.
(I recently bought a Kindle 6 on eBay for use as a web based / IFTTT touchscreen thermostat - my heating system isn't Nest compatible)
Why is nobody talking about the blurry beautiful cat.
Omg lol
Pays $120/year
"lOoK aT aLl ThIs FrEe StUfF"
I've still got the HD 8 from 2016 and I love that thing. Used it hard for my undergrad textbook PDFs and whatnot, I'm getting the 2020 version for my master's program to use with Zoom and Skype and all the other uni apps (will be side loading Google Play haha)
I wanted a follow up to the Nvidia K1 tablet. Amazing in every way and years a head of it's time.
I had a kindle fire gen 3 that recently broke it was a wonderful tablet in its time is this a good tablet to go to? I got a 7th gen a few years back as a gift and it was way worse than the old one. So bad that I continued to use the one from 2014
I wish Android tablets would get more attention by reviewers. It's 99% iPad and judging from what is said, you might really think that this is your only viable choice. I was genuinely surprised to see that the Galaxy Tab isn't a bad choice at all compared to the iPad, as long as you don't need stuff like Garage Band, iMovie or Affinity.
I did buy the Fire HD 10 for $150 and sideloaded the play store. For me, it was a good buy. I use it often for Disney+, Netflix, amazon prime. It's not great, but it's good.
6:00 - That's because Apple doesn't want people to share iPads, they want everyone to buy their own. 😒
Next ios update for iPad will have multiple user accounts
Darn capitalism. What will we ever do?
It is not free if you are paying for a subscription.
120...are you kidding me... I even don't pay 20 for a year's subscription...for 110...I'll get myself a new phone
Thanks for a great video. I have a Kindle Paperwhite and an iPad, but I'm thinking of getting a Fire 8+ soon. I'll be using it for Kindle books, Audible and podcasts mainly. I'll be using it mainly when I'm travelling....easier to carry than my iPad. I'm going to be patient and wait until Black Friday. I'd be interested in seeing the sort of deal I'll get by combining Black Friday with the Amazon Trade In discount (I have an old Kindle Fire 7).
I've side-loaded Google Play Services on my older Fire HD 10. Its quite easy to side-load. There r many step-by-step tutorials on CZcams and Web. And now I'm using any android app I want. Only catch is that, my older fire HD 10 is based on fire OS, which is built on Android 7, so any app(like say the Chive) which requires android 8 or above, will not work on the tablet. The fireOS on newer fire tablets should be on newer android. So side-load Google Play and use it as any other regular android device.
I gave my son one when he was 4 that I got for $49, he is now 7 and it's still going strong. I would have been happy if it lasted one year, I couldn't tell you the countless hours of enjoyment he's got from it.
I just love the way that wireless charger looks
DO NOT KNOCK PSYCH!!! I love that show!!!😁
You didn't mention Amazon Free time, which is actually pretty outstanding if you've got little kids.
5:49 kids mode
To The Verge side loading apps is *HACKING*
To hack something is a pretty general term. Hacking in the sense of overcoming out the box limitations then yes, that describes having to sideload Google apps... From a security/malicious perspective, then no.
To run Google services you need to remove the back cover to enter in recovery mode and flash a custom rom. Maybe that's what they're talking about
@@lorenzomijorus No you dont, just install an APK for the Plat Store and a second for Play Services. Then you're good to go.
@@rightwingsafetysquad9872 if it was that simple, why aren't everybody recommending a Huawei phone right now?
@@lorenzomijorus Well, A, you literally can't buy one in North America right now. And B, security concerns. Nothing to do with the lack of Google Play.
I have the 2017 HD10 and it’s still perfect for someone that is a cord cutter. Plex with an HD Homerun and DVR with a display I can take everywhere is awesome.
Does your Fire HD hang and stutter when playing live or dvr recorded TV from the Hdhomerun? Mine does but only on the Fire hd, my shield TV and computers have no stuttering or freezing.
grocerylist no issues with Live TV. I actually prefer the live TV through the Homerun. The volume is better. The DVR feature is through my Plex Pass. No issues with playback with that either.
@@TroySchuler thanks, yeah I also use plex pass but for some reason the fire HD freezes playback often or is constantly stuttering. No other devices do that.
So much snobbery in the comments. The tablet is fine for 99.9% of people. For the price is incredible. The ads are easy to ignore, you can install Play Store and it runs media well. It does exactly what it's supposed to.
Amazon gives you a name to use to talk about their smart assistant without triggering it. Amazon Echo.
He's trying not to set off ours
If you pay for Prime, nothing Prime offers is free. It is part of the price.
I bought it for 59 dollars.
Best deal in the world.
What's the capacity, 32 or 64?
FYI - Amazon Prime benifits vary per country.
Used Fire toolbox and had play store and an android launcher in 5 minutes. Disabled ads. Now it's a fairly fast android 8 inch tablet for $75! Super easy. Not a pain at all! Try it!
I agree, the best Android tablet was the Nexus 7 gen2. I loved it so much. Been with me for five years until finally died.
Amazon trying to sell a device where they can sell you more products.
Finally someone who has seen Burn Notice.. Miss Micheal Weston... You brought so many memories back..
How is the speaker?
6:12 : all around tablet that runs uhmm errm hmm 🤣 - Dieter, 2020
Amazon=Good
Amazon=Bad
Amazon=Amazon actually really good.
1:35 OMG! Yes! I looooooved my Nexus 7 so much! That tablet was so good! Everything about it was perfect. The textured matte finish, the screen, the performance, the size, the bezels to hold it without blocking the screen.
I'm still using my Nexus 10 daily, there's just nothing out there to replace it with...
Why not get a iPad then.
Tell me anything the nexus 10 do that no other andoid tablet do?
@@Natsukashii1111 you are not playing call of duty mobile on that.
@@CodeVenomSnakes ? I was asking Andrew about his nexus 10, not your iPad.
@@Natsukashii1111 I am saying that the nexus 10 cannot play call of duty mobile on it.
TWiT uses "Madam A" when talking about Alexa. Always thought it was a nice way to talk about Alexa without triggering it.
Basically sell ur data at AWS and say yes to tracking what you try to order.. so the first thing you do is format it and install something different
That why I got the 64gb version without ads and a case. I paid $170 total.
This is a great device to use with home automation systems using sharp tools and fully kiosk browser. Great value for controlling lighting, blinds, irrigation systems etc etc. with the bonus of Amazon Alexa. Not the fastest device, but this is not needed for a home control solution.
Great video, I’ll stick with my iPad Pro for my everyday tablet.
Hi. Saw your video and I must say, I totally agree with you. I have a Kindle Fire 7, about six years old; slow but still working. I also have an iPad...newish. Your video helped me to make up my mind. I bought a Fire 8+. I love it.....for all of the things that it does well. I was amazed at how quickly and easily it was to set up. Basically, log on to Amazon and everything works. Just fantastic the way it linked to my Echo devices and my smart home devices without me even to have to put a tick in a box. Bit frustrated because it won't log in to my iPhone's wifi hotspot but other than that, everything appears to work. I've a feeling that as long as you don't expect too much and stick to things like Kindle, Audible, Amazon Music and Movies then it will be just fine....Oh, and I've just discovered Podcasts using Amazon Music:- nifty.
For a $120.00 for basic net surfing and online shopping? It's not bad for this is what most people do with their computers.
No, slow is not ok with me. After using a decent product i can't force myself to use something with such jitter and slowness.
Need something to read , what do you think would be better between this and an old iPad mini
I got it, is not bad, but you get what you pay for: low brightness, slow processing speed and response and Amazon doesn't allow you to use some Apps from its competitors, which is bad.
You can install the Google play store onto it, it takes a some effort but is well worth it
Yep, basically 4 files you need to load in the proper order and you're good to go with the play store.
"hacking" = sideloading the google store?
Fire tablets are perfectly fine media tablets with a little bit of tinkering and disabling all the bloatware.
That's what they are built for and for the price, they make do.
After just using iPad 6th gen, every other tablet in the market feels super cheap quality as compared to that, I don’t know what will happen when I use an iPad Pro someday
No, you did not set up my echo. Great video though!
Just buy a Microsoft surface and install android in Dual Boot or just buy a Samsung Galaxy Tab. Honestly, there aren't many options when it comes to Android Tablets.
I'm a fire tablet owner (my company gave it for free as a Christmas gift), but I would say the iPad is way better. There're no apps in Amazon's store.
What i hate is you can't go download apps that work from the Google Store.
Amazon prime in India cost ₹1000 or $13.10 and you can get 50% off carrier discount or youth discount.
And btw it only have prime shipping , prime video (only a few good quality international content) and amazon music.
This tablet with the wireless stand is perfect for watching Netflix and Prime Video, I'm sold.
I really wish that Google would make another Nexus 7. It was the perfect size and the screen quality was great. I still use my Nexus 7 (2013) for reading ebooks and comics.
Can we flash android os to it?
Our family's workaround for avoiding the names of Google, Alexa or Siri just involves referring to any of them as "'The Assistant". I've also stopped using "Google" as a verb (as in, I no longer say I'm Googling stuff) to avoid waking up my phone or my Google Home Mini.
wanna know something funny I'm watching this video on a fire amazon tablet
It literally takes less than five mins to get Google Play store. And then you can have normal youtube and mostly all apps on android on it. So I am not sure why he said it takes "hacking" .
What I don't get is why Samsung etc don't just transition to Chrome OS tablets now. I know the Pixel Slate was a disaster, but most of those issues have all been resolved now - and would frankly be better than iPadOS if they put a half-decent processor in the thing.
I got 10 inch version I don't find it to be all that bad I only use it because I'm a Prime member I use it for watching movies and music
Thank you for not triggering everyone's smart home devices! Everyone on CZcams could learn from your presenting style.
All his complaints is that is doesn't do what it was not designed to do.
It is an AMAZON tablet, designed for AMAZON PRIME.
They also allow you to stream other content, for what it was designed for, it is perfect
I still have my Nexus 7... 😅😅
Wireless charging... in a $110 tablet... Would like to know the excuse from pretty much every manufacturer who's selling even $700 phones without wireless charging at this point.
Dieter, you are nailing these reviews atm. Keep doing what you're doing.
What is the need of tablets in first place?
Buy one flagship phone and good laptop..some blutooth buds will be fine...
Just E-waste...
I see as a good e-reader, but yes, amazon makes these tablets ridiculously unrepairable, a glue nightmare
Nobody:
Verge: its the best, the worst
Its awesome, its terrible
Finally usb-c, hopefully there'll update the oasis with it soon too
personally, id go for the Lenovo Smart Tab M8.... its basically the same thing but with smaller bezels, stock android and a google assistant dock
Two odd positives: (1) it supports Widevine Level 1.0, which is apparently essentially for watching Netflix in 720p (believe it or not the Galaxy Tab A 8 only goes to 600p despite having a 720p screen because its DRM is only Level 3); and (2) I believe that Amazon pushes out more security updates than any other Android maker. Lack of CZcams official app and lack of GMail app are a huge negative. If it had 100% sRGB gamut I'd buy it in an instant. As it is, I'm stuck with a much larger iPad and the iPad mini is just too expensive.
I was watching this in the room where I used "Echo" as the wake word. Alexa perked up a few times adding "Hmm, I'm not sure I know that".
Got the 10 inch HD for my boy. CZcams is terrible on it blurry and glitchy looking its honestly pathetic. i dont know with the size of the things why the display is so shocking.
Dieter, you activated Alexa in the outro when you were talking about trying not to activate it - the blue bar lit up at the bottom of the tablet screen to show this...
Psych! Love that show, good choice.
I have a Nexus 7 with a broken screen. I'm gonna get it fixed rather than getting this Amazon tablet, cuz it has a FHD display. If Amazon comes out with a 1080p tablet at this price point, I'll reconsider
Not only did you give an awesome review video, you praised Psych. I frikken love you!!
Wait, there is a The Verge App 1:00 like official android App? Or it is the "old" pre Kit-Kat circa Lollipop Android, or Amazon App World/Store exclusive or this is just shortcut to your website? I mean I would like to use The Verge Official App though!
Deiter should learn Fingerspelling the next time he wants to say Alexa 😁
I am typing this on one and that title was a perfect description
