- The boys are in Euro crisis hit Spain to test three new "budget supercars" Clarkson selects a bright yellow ₤195,000 McLaren MP4-12C Spider, Hammond takes a red ₤198,000 Ferrari 458 Spider, and May chooses a gray ₤121,000 Audi R8 V10 Spyder. Searching for a place to test the top speeds of their cars, they chance across the disused Ciudad Real Central Airport. Clarkson's MP4 reaches 198 mph (319 km/h), besting the 458's 193 mph (311 km/h) and the R8's 186 mph (299 km/h). But the real test of any supercar, as James May devises, is; who can get the finish line first and secure the car's roof from convertible to hard top.

Im watching it in tv right now but why ist the Airport so empty ?!
It was abandoned in 2011 because of low traffic. Even though I don't know how it was so clean after 2 years.
The airport was not in use but they still maintained and cleaned it because there were plans on reselling it, if I remember right to a chinese airline who wanted to use it as a hub for air-transport.
Selling is much harder if the airport is just a ruin due to bad maintenance.

James is a true pilot. Using all the runway and calling out the buffeting is taught early in training. He's at home at an airport
May I ask why they're taught to call "buffeting"?
@@fishingfan1500 when the plane starts to buffet through the air, the planes wings are about to lose lift and stall. A stall is when the plane is no longer flying because the air flow over the wings is disturbed due to the wings exceeding the critical angle of attack. The buffet is called so you recognize that a stall is imminent and you can take corrective action by lowering the angle of attack. At a check ride for a pilots license you will have to demonstrate this and know when the plane is in an imminent stall. Watch a video from a flight instructor on power on and power off stalls. There's a lot to this.

This clip is 5 years old, and the cars are a bit older than that, and only now have these cars started to age a tiny bit for me. Class will never become outdated. The interiors of the Ferrari and the Audi are so beautiful.

Apparently the airport owners still have to pay someone once a year to come along and respray the X's along the runway, so that no one lands there. It costs the operators some insane amount per day for each day that airport isn't being used. It was put up for auction last year with a starting bid of 100 million euro. That's 1/10th the original value of the cost to make it.
Why would it cost them money if it's not being used ?!...hire some guy with a mop...done.
Because the airport is kept open.. that means lights, water, amenities, etc. Who knows why it's kept open if no one is using it, but that's what's happening.
Otherwise the government wil demolish the airport, and it cant be sold

Apparently lack of business, GFC hit these guys hard. They built the airport around the business of a semi-major carrier called Pyrenees Airways or something similar which would do ski-season flights. That airline folded and now the minor carriers can't afford to prop up the airport themselves so it went under the hammer last year. There's vid's on it, look up Ciudad Real airport.

Specifically theyre in spain at a time when Spains unemployment was disastorously high and at one point they literally walk into an empty house and stay there instead of a hotel. The whole episode is a dream because who wouldnt want a Beautiful EMPTY country like Spain to drive GORGEOUS cars around.

it was literally abandoned until last year, when it landed the first plane, after having been closed during a lot of years because no airline wanted to send planes to that city, and it was a part of a corruption plot, and the media reported that no one was guarding the infrastructure .

He guys! Over here in Germany we have a huge playground for you, if you like. The socalled Hauptstadtflughafen, our new airport in Berlin could be yours. It is huge, brand new and completely unused. 4000 m × 60 m concrete or 3600 m × 45 m tarmac if you like that more. Why should the damn thing decay unused. Everybody likes TG and your humour best, we don't have something comparable. Come over, enjoy!

Ok so Spain is not the only place where corrupt politicians built airports that will be completely unused. People making fun of this and they have their corruption issues as well.
It's not a corruption thing.
It's planning incompetence. The ventilation system is not up to par and would be unalbe to ensure breathable air inside the terminals in an event of fire. Also the fire extinguisher system is improperly planned. Will not suffice either.
Until they fix this, the Airport cannot be used
