I really like how you actually took the time to learn more about this profession and all the reasons people might rent someone in this capacity rather than just treating it like some kind of weird novelty. The story of the girl hiring a mom to have tea and shop with her was particularly sad and heartwarming at the same time. It’s an interesting peek into Japanese culture, and I think something more of us can relate to than we might realize elsewhere in the world.

Well it’s primarily due to being a part of the adult industry. Majority of parents often disown their children due to working in such a industry. Especially if it’s in a country like Japan. It’s not uncommon. Even in the U.S it’s a hard pill to swallow and honestly I believe the U.S is probably one of the few countries who would accept their daughter/son but even then it’s very difficult. Such a thing is not normalised with families. As we further get into the newer generation some families are a bit more accepting but nevertheless it’s still the same. Even in jokes it’s seen as an embarrassment to have a sibling or their relative work in pornography. I.e a lot of jokes are targeted toward having a daughter/son work in OF and such.

It's kinda not even Japan exclusive. I know there's groups that try to connect volunteer stand in families with people who got disowned by their bio family for being LGBTQ. The social pressure may be less less and the dynamics very different. But people may still want someone to fill a parent role for a wedding or graduation ceremony. Heck, I've known someone who's parents completely cut off contact when he left their religious cult. There's many reasons why someone may have no more contact with their family but would still like a stand in sometimes.
In my city there's even been initiatives to connect elderly people with families with young children who may have no grandparents or grandparents that live very far away. Keeps the elderly active and social and the children still get to experience having grandparents.
And well, then there's sex workers and sugar babies essentially offering paid "girlfriend experiences".
It takes different forms because of different social constructs. And outside of sex work I don't think making it a paid service would go over too well in the west. But there's some parallels.

No it wasn't for that. The talents in question stated 9 out of 10 of the ladies that were women who's families had pressured them to do amazing in school, get an amazing job, get into various high prestigious things and then turned around..."when am I going to have grandchildren..." and took a serious load of pressure at family events.
"Oh here is my boyfriend, he works at XYZ company in town Q...that's why you haven't seen him". Dude would be polite, say nice things about the daughter and be appropriately awkward/nervous to the dad.

This whole "rent-a-____" is really strange on the surface, but has (along with some VERY odd moments) a really touching and thought-provoking side that I didn't think about before watching this video.
I feel like Japan's "problems" within it's society NEED to be looked at, but it's so ingrained into the people and history that "rent-a-____" places are actually really important for many people to get a sense of some change in their life which they were missing or needed for various reasons.
I think they are great and surprisingly important.
