In the late 1960s, the American artist Robert Smithson created an art form whose material is nature itself. By working on territories untouched by human influence, he became the initiator and theorist of Land Art. His works are often monumental, such as the Spiral Jetty, created in 1970, a spiral made of pebbles and surrounded by pink water.
