Super Mario Maker.If you play the 100 Mario Challenge on Easy, then instead of finding the princess at the end, you get the classic 8-bit Toad sprite flipping you off and telling you that she's been taken to another castle. A classic way for Nintendo to troll the players who just weren't ready for the actual trolls who designed the hellish courses.

From a slightly different perspective: I myself am a disabled gamer with motor issues that often make gaming really difficult, so I appreciate having adjustable difficulty in games. And if you don't want to put an easy mode in your game, then that's cool, but why bother making one just for the sake of pettiness? It would have been easier and less time-consuming to just leave it out. And honestly, what is it taking away from your gaming experience if other people play on easy? Just let everyone play how they want to.

Yeah, I mean if you have something like Pretty Princess mode, where it’s SUPER easy, or it just makes a joke, I don’t care, but games that lock out the ending or part of the content because you play on just easy is just a little ridiculous to me.
As to why put on a mock "easy" mode, sometimes publishers insist that an easy mode exist to attract a wider audience, even if it gimps the creative intention of the devs. You can see how some of the latter can take offence at it.

I really don't like people who act like gaming is all about skill. Games are actually for entertainment. That has changed in the world of today, however and not playing the online multiplayer is apparently "not actually playing the game" according to one of my friends.

What I was trying to say was the developer has no obligation to include an easy mode if they don't want you using it. it doesn't strike you as a waste of time to include a difficulty setting that you're gonna insult the player for using?

Personally, I almost never pick easy mode on video games, always playing on normal or harder looking for a challenge.
But I admit that easy mode is needed, it helps those that are bad at gaming to get good, allowing them to start at somewhere.
One of my favourite easy modes is the one from the fighting game Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2, it allows newbies to do combos and special moves just by pressing random buttons, making them feel like they're doing something and allows them to fight against pros.
I loved it because it made me able to play against my siblings and cousins in fair and cool matches without me stomping them too hard to make them rage quit. Amazing job by Arc Sys Works.

While I do find these hilarious, I have to point out that this is really unfair to people who legitimately cannot play on modes higher than Easy.
People have different good points and bad points, some people don't have the reactions or motor skills to play these games on Normal or higher. It can be genuine problems and both of the issues I mentioned can be part of having dyslexia.
Making fun of these people is good and all, but changing the actual content, by which I mean removing it, is just not fair to them.
Go ahead and add pink ribbons and false worm facts, but removing content and such is just a dick move.

The one reason why I play on easy mode is I want to know the mechanics of the game first. It makes no sense to hop right into hard mode into a game you haven't played before. Doing easy mode first makes less rage quitting less. Then when you know the game then go into hard mode.
Oh BTW. there's 10 more games I won't buy.

The challenge IS the fun.
I never got the whole controversy (and there is one) over whether certain or any games should include easier difficulties. I'm a filthy casual who is terrible at games, but playing a game I love on the easiest difficulty and working my way up from there makes me feel a sense of accomplishment, like I'm actually starting to get halfway decent or even good at a game. For example, I've beaten all the Bioshock games on all their modes starting on easy (except Infinite's 1999 mode. I've broken two controllers trying to get past the first Fireman and I can't afford a new controller to give it another go. A shame since I know as hard as the mode is, it gets easier once you get past that Fireman since you get a weapon other than a standard pistol and your first vigors).

I think for games like CupHead it is okay though because the entire point of the game is to be really challenging and pretty much a pure Boss Battle type of game. There isn't a really big story to it and very few non-boss levels- so playing it on an easy mode would remove what makes Cuphead, Cuphead! I think it doesn't let you beat it because Easy mode become the practice mode? Like you learn on easy then can go back and play harder modes, because that way you get to experience the game the way it was meant to be experienced.
While that is true, there isn't any kind of permanent difficulty switch in Cuphead - you choose your difficulty at the start of every stage. So what that ends up meaning is that you can fight each boss any number of times on easy to practice their mechanics and get good at the game, and then switch to regular difficulty when you are ready. It's actually a really clever way of handling difficulty.

I remember when I was little I would play Castlevania 64 and I would play on normal mode as Carrie but when I was like 6 I wanted to try Reinhardt but figured it would be harder so I switched to easy mode and got all the way through stage five only to get stopped and told I had to restart from the beginning. Ten years later I still haven't finished the game as him because I just don't feel like restarting even if it is easy on normal mode.
I have always been of the mindset that a game should be fun first and challenging second. I play games to explore their worlds, lore, and story. I play on lower difficulties (usually) and I will not hesitate to cheat, either to make the game easier, or more fun. I am not ashamed to admit this. I am not ashamed to say I enjoy it. Nothing can be said to me or done to me that will change my mind on this matter.

SHENMUE as a young gamer I experienced this for the first time. I hated and didn’t understand stealth missions/games. I kept getting caught on the sneak into the warehouse mission. They eventually gave me a map. I still kept getting caught. Then they put where the guards were... caught again. Finally they put arrows in the direction the guards were walking... 9 yr old me first met depression on this day

The fighting games in the SNES days like Street Fighter 2. If you played those games on easy the game will tell you "Try defeating the game on a harder difficulty" instead of letting you see the arcade endings.

whilst yeah it does keep them eating, i dont think thats called for, i just think that people should be able to play a game how they want too without being mocked or alienated for it
Punishing players for playing in easy mode is bad. But there's one thing, when you play in that mode, you're willingly reducing the gameplay part of the whole experience apart from story, graphics and soundtracks. You won't feel the thrill of battle or adventure to the fullest when you're playing in easy mode. Story can be finished faster than those who have to retry a lot in harder modes. Imagine Dark Souls series providing easy mode so that people rarely die, it'll make the games boring... And they can't complain about that since they choose to play the game with easy mode (if they have common sense)

Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose did something very similar to Castle of Illusion; on Easy mode, most of the levels, and I think all of the bosses are skipped. (This was a Konami game, and they did a lot of stuff like this in their games during the 16-bit era; you would get a sub-par ending, and only get the "real" ending if you beat it on Hard mode)

Games that mock people for playing on easy are absolute garbage. Some people have slower reaction times and poor motor skills (me) and can easily killed by enemies in games. Some people just want to play on easy and enjoy themselves. Don’t mock players who have paid money to play your game the way they want to play. Not all of us are hard mode or nothing type people.

The Lion King on the 16 bit consoles. The Normal mode starts you with the standard three lives and one continue. Easy mode, however, gives you a whopping eight lives and three continues.
Oh, and the second level is the typical Disney "rental stop" level, making an early level more difficult than it should. It was so a kid can't complete the game in a standard length of a video game rental, and might have to buy the game in order to have the time to practice the level to pass.
There's also Gain Ground. Play on Hard, and you get all the characters from the start, rather than getting them slowly through gameplay. The tradeoff is that you have to defeat all the enemies, since there's not enough time to get them all to the exit.
I couldn't stop laughing at Ben rubbing against that wall. Ben x Wall, anyone? xD
Valkyrie Profile is probably the only game in history that removed content from all difficulties, even hard mode. Some of the dungeons that you visit in easy and normal mode are removed from hard mode like the Black Dream Tower and I think the Forest of Woe as well.
