I liked this movie as a kid, I never understood why it got so much flack at the time. Even as an adult, I find it a touching and fun film. To this day, I still love the adorable reindeer.

It got flack because ti openly criticizes the materialism Christmas had become by the 1980s...Kids were all about what they were GETTING for Christmas and not what they were GIVING for Christmas...so critics hated it I believe because of this...its not a feel good movie until things get set right in the end...its a reminder of what Christmas is really about.

This movie shaped my idea of what Santa Claus was as a child. We still watch it every year. I can't help but feel that he froze to death in the snow... and the elves brought him back to life to be Santa Claus. Adds a bit of a tragic element to it... with a good end of course... but the idea that he would sacrifice himself like that would make a really good legend.

So much care, such a strong sense for sensible storytelling, the outstanding performances of every single actor (from the biggest to the smallest role) and the wonderfully done sets and props..... it is all right there and it touches me every darn time i watch it. Another fun fact, which I think is just REALLY awesome, is that this movie was the first time that a team of eight reindeer was put together and trained to work as a team. I've heard that's not something that reindeer tend to do naturally in the wild, and that it's almost impossible to get even three or four of them to work together.
Also additional music trivial, 'Santa Claus: The Movie' has been associated with The Radio City Rockettes since the movie's release and at least through the mid-'90s. I can't exactly remember how, since I was a kid at the time and I can't find any information on Google, so I'm not sure if the movie was used in the advertising for the yearly Christmas show, if they used 'Christmas All Over the World' in the show, or if it's some combination of both. All I remember for sure is that it was a big enough cultural impact that we heard about it all the way here in Michigan (Broadway/NYC theatre news rarely made it out of New York and into national headlines during the '80s unless it became a HUGE deal that really caught people's attention - eg: 'Les Miserables' or Lloyd Webber's 'Phantom of the Opera'). Does anybody else remember The Rockettes using this movie in their Christmas show?

I saw this movie like in 88-89 had to wait till the VHS came out. I was a teen and I enjoyed the movie. I remember my father's reaction to the movie almost seeming like two movies. The first part the origin of Santa, he loved that. Although my father would leave when the modern part came on. As I have gotten older I don't like the last half as much either. It is too commercial, which ironically the movie touches on.

No, you are definitely NOT the only one... I absolutely LOVE this movie! When I was a kid, they played it on HBO all the time and I'd watch it almost daily, even when it wasn't Christmas time. Now, as an adult, it's just not Christmas until I watch it. But I honestly thought my sister and I were the only ones who loved this movie. I'm so happy to know that others appreciate it (and whatever faults it may or may not have), too!

Love this movie! My family and I kinda had a special screening of it when it was in theaters. The local two screen theater at the time usually had showings at roughly 7pm and 9pm. We went to go to the 9pm show and were the only ones in there. We didn't think anything of it, but we kept waiting and waiting for the movie to start. Finally we went and talked to the theater employees and they said that they weren't doing a 9pm showing of that movie that night. But, since we had already paid and waited so long they showed it for us anyways! As a kid that was so cool to have it shown just for us!

In the United States almost 80% of the marketing for this film was through McDonalds Happy meals and McDonald’s Christmas commercials (in the early 80s McDonalds Holiday commercials were a really big deal, had high production values and played almost every half hour on every channel. Had it not been for McDonald’s most of us wouldn’t even know this film existed. Sad that this film was considered a box office flop, (hadn’t gotten to the part of your video mentioning McDonald’s until after Almost typed my entire comment lol)
