    I will admit I've hated Sony for years, but I did use the FX9 on a shoot not long ago purely because the rental house gave it to me super cheap during lockdown - and I have to say I 100% agree with you about the colours, the codec and the variable ND. All of those features are like.. oof yum.

    • @MattiasSkoog
      @MattiasSkoog Před 2 lety

      @@smann7236 yes, still have it (along with one FX6 and one FX3). You can absolutely get that look as with most modern cameras shooting log and good exposure. I’m often solo operating my camera and have been actually looking into it: the FX9 serves me much better than Arri mini and mini LF for example. Especially when it comes to external sound sources (XLR inputs) and variable ND-filter. However, the new Arri Alexa 35 seems to be an absolute beast and would be awesome to work with… but the price for that camera is the same as six or seven FX9:s 😄

    • @smann7236

      @@MattiasSkoog cool..thanks for reply. I'm from UK, trying to organise short film production, 35mm and Arri Alexa too expensive here. I found local cameraman who has Sony fx7 and Fx9. I'm really paranoid with the digital look, but looking at the film footage I'm impressed. I like the colours...so I may choose fx9 . Two questions: I'm confused about shooting raw or s-log or cine...do I have to shoot raw to get awesome colours or can I just shoot slog or cine to get film look?
      Also what's your opinion on Sony a7 for short film production? Can I still get the film look with that..

    • @MattiasSkoog
      @MattiasSkoog Před 2 lety +1

      @@smann7236 first of all, I would say that lighting and lens choice along with the operators experience and knowledge has a bigger impact than what camera model is used. With that said I think it’s wise to consider the whole package when selecting your gear for the whole project. If a smaller (cheaper) camera body give you the opportunity to rent better lights and lenses and more days to master it, I think you’ll get better result. But, that’s just my two cents. What I do know is that many people (including myself in the beginning) thought that the magic happens in the spec sheet of the camera body. That is simply not the case. I’ve seen crappy footage from the best of cameras and I seen wonderful work from some really basic gear to summon up my thoughts.

    Thanks for this Mark, I loved shooting on the FX9 too. But I think for me personally the C500 just had a few more ecosystem features I preferred. What I think is crazy is that in this day and age, it's the little things, like ergonomics or button placement etc that separate these cameras (price not withstanding) instead of major feature differences (again for someone who isn't looking to shoot raw all the much). I also think Ecosystem (like apple) plays a much bigger role than it used to. IE if you dig e-Mount lenses over EF you will find better experiences when not using adapters and matching the camera to your lens collection is a big factor. Especially when nearly all cameras create amazing images these days.
    But damn that 180 frames makes such a huge difference when not cropped, no joke.

    • @markbone
      @markbone  Před 4 lety +1

      Aaron, this is and will be one of the most sound and logical perspectives about cameras that I may see posted on this video or any of my videos. You're spot on, ecosystem really pushes you to buy the next camera. It's painful to leave an ecosystem, hence while I'm still on a Mac when PC has more horse power for cheaper. Thank you for your perspective, it's a great take.

    • @avdcam
      @avdcam Před 4 lety

      @@markbone Thank you! Anytime :). Also slight addition to the AVC stigma (it really exists) I think labeling codecs is just a mess in general. AVC and H.264 are interchangeable and were adopted in the name I think due to a licensing agreement with MPEGLA folks. So Sony has their distro named X-AVC- (I,L,S) and Canon their XF-AVC title. They both operate very similarly. H.264 compression on the frames and a choice to be intra frame or long gop. I think this is the biggest disservice, since intra frame codecs make a huge difference in edit-ability and grading to an extent, while the log gop varients can suffer serious quality loss at the lower datarates or with more complex and varied footage. They really are completely different meals, but sony and canon package them like different flavours.

    Great looking video. As a FX9 owner myself I was wondering what is your Slog3 experience on the sensor concerning overexposure. I did a lot of test and mostly shoot the camera rated as Iso 400/500 (in based 800 Iso). So basically not pushing the exposure as much as on a Fs7. But what's your experience. :)

      that might work for 800 but I find the 4000 very noisy, you need to pump that ISO with lots of light

    Great video. What are your thoughts on the size and weight of the FX9 and it’s versatility for documentary film making? I’m still curious to see what the specifications of a potential FX6 are and which I assume will be a more compact body.

      It's heavier that the Fs7, but not heavy enough to become unusable. A bit smaller would have been nice but it fits better on the shoulder because of this. I found the Fs5 too flimsy, I dunno what the Fx6 will be like

    This is my dream camera, I feel like the a7siii will be the perfect B cam for it when it comes out, BTW do you need to convert any files after shooting to be able to use them in premiere?

    Thanks for the update. Do you use the autofocus of the FX9 a lot for example in this sports shot? Or manual focus most of the time? Looks hard to nail focus when you are running around fast moving objects with that shallow dof!

  • @stophatecomments-stoppnett963

    Is Sony FX9 still the best camera for documentaries? I'm a pro documentary maker and going to buy a new camera, are now in a camera research face, and feel a little lost...

    You know what I've noticed, in actual cinema, cinematic films motion pictures. They effectively never go beyond F2.8 apart from for really specific reasons!. I mean yea this advert/film he made the background wasn't overly blown out so I'm guessing he didn't go beyond f2.8! Next time you watch a film like joker, the Irishman etc look at the backround and you'll notice it's not totally blurred out and gone it's just enough to put attention to the foreground but if you look you can still make out what's happening!. This notion on CZcams that you have to totally blur and blow out the backround to be cinematic is utter rubbish and just isn't a thing.

      i agree. blown out backgrounds isn't usually a thing in cinema where the everything in the background is there for a reason. it'd be crazy to have a great set designer and art team to just blow out the background for the sake of it. These really shallow DOF shots aren't 'cinematic' at all. That's not a dig at this camera - it looks excellent. Just a comment on people wrongly call shallow DOF shots cinematic.

    Is "true RAW" vs. "pseudo-raw" going to be the difference between my stuff being good or bad? Nope. Being camera/brand agnostic is the ideal, though I am specifically watching this because Sony is one of my least favorite brands/approaches, so I'm interested to learn what someone who knows/likes the brand and their approach has to say about their flagship (for the "real world") camera. The files off this camera could absolutely be "good enough" for me, and we shouldn't see "good enough" as somehow a terrible thing when it is a means to the end of executing/completing good projects. I'm not rushing out to buy or even rent this camera, but I'm glad a know a good deal more about how it actually works in the real world. Would love to have that variable internal ND, though!
