This time im sampling a Dorothy Moore record, chopping it up on the OP and recording it straight to the four-track.

Accurate Beats i understand the use of turn-table for sampling originals, but is all the other equitment really necessary? Cant i just use fl studio to make beats, Or do i need a bunch of tools to have a good sound?
Nonono! You just need a computer with some kind of software!
Maybe an iPad app? Check out my Q&A for a little bit of tips for beginners. The tools I use just adds fun to the process and in some cases (OP-1) some preyyr unique sounds.
Sampling can be made on any computer with FL studio, Garageband, logic or whatever.

Hey...I left a message on your other video concerning sampling as well...but anyways. I just really wanna know the "HOW TO" of sampling from start to finish. I use ProTools and Logic Pro X in college and I purchased the Maschine Mikro 2 and an Audio Technica turn table in hopes to LEARN this craft. PLEASE HELP! LOL! Do you offer tutorials of the "how to" from start to finish. I would totally watch EVERY one of them!

Maxpiz thanks man! The OP-1 is just one of the tools I use. The same thing can be done on a Machine, a MPC or any DAW really.
The time it takes? Well, it depends... This beat was made in a couple of hours including the scratching part. The video took much longer... I was working on this edit for 3 days if I remember correctly.

+Accurate Beats I'm a newbie to everything. Do you mind if I ask some questions? Do you try to beatmatch the tempo to the sampled song? When chopping up the vocals and beats, do you look for a slower song so you have longer notes and vocals? Also, do you chop them all to a standard length? like 1/4 a beat for each one. It seems like on the op1 its very manual, and it doesn't tell you how long your sample is compared to the tempo.
Still playing around with it, love your style. keep doing more videos! I'll learn by osmosis. :D

i never beatmatch the sample to my drums... If I do that I might just play the sample as it is on the record and add my own drums, that not fun at all.
I see what you mean by slower songs and longer slices... I used to think like that when i just started sampling. Today i think i can sample almost anything, short chops, just a end of a word or stuff like that and use tricks like reversing the sample, use beatdelay or just make more "chopping sounding" beats. I just cut the chops were i like the sound. I might take a look at the soundwaves (if the sampler allows it) but i dont care about 4:ths or 8:ths. I just cut it depending on sound... Nothing else.
The OP-1 slices the 12 sec sample automaticly over the keys, then I have to adjust or change them. All chops are originally the same length, i hate that.
In Maschine I instead duplicate the sample and set the startpoint were i like it. The OP-1 works pretty much like my previous hardware sampler (Roland SP-404) in the way that you have to listen to the chops and the beats more than looking at it.
I never use grids or quantization so if the chop ends before the bar I just have to play it differently or change the pitch. Somethimes the silence after a too short slice is pure magic... Dj Premier uses that silence a lot.

The sp-404 and me never actually fell in love with one another. I need to be able to pitch samples in order to sound like myself... Its a great device and I wish I could get used to it but... We just didnt work out :p
