I have not experienced ABC until the purchase of my 2009 SL550 last year. It is absolutely incredible! I test it on windy roads and inclines, and it does not cease to amaze me how level and smooth the car rides. I take corners sharper than I ever have, and have confidence on every curve. I keep mine on "Sport" most of the time, and am happy with that. Highly recommended option and almost a necessity!

The ABC suspension is nothing short of amazing! Taking a on ramp sharp curve on the highway going 70mph and still being level is crazy! This system actually helps you drive better! If I mention the distronic cruise control and what it does you people would lose your mind...😜

sputnik I would have it checked to see if the previous owner didn’t change them out because they are expensive to replace. He might have put some lower quality shocks on the back. also check the tires. A hard sidewall tire on lower profile tires can give you a hard ride. Just remember level and stability isn’t equivalent to soft or smooth. Put you some Michelin’s on there and go back to OEM size tires with a middle number of 40 or better

The ABC suspension is brilliant! However, if you buy a used Mercedes with this system prepare to replace some of the components around 60,000 miles or 100,000 km. These include the tandem pump, accumulators and pulsation damper. Be sure to change the hydraulic fluid and filter every couple of years regardless of what the dealer says. Make sure the area around the power steering and ABC dipsticks are spotless. Dirt kills ABC components! The upper notch = engine off & lower notch = engine running. Driving after the red warning light indicates "car too low" can cause the tandem pump to burn out and contaminate the whole system = disaster! Pull over safely, turn off the engine and have the car flat-bedded to the mechanic. Only replace parts with new MB ones as rebuilt pumps can fail and its very expensive to install. Conclusion: Buy a 12 year old used ABC equipped Merc (preferably an AMG) for less than $30,000, add $5-10,000 in repairs and you'll have a 500 hp rocket ship for about $35,000. p.s ABC systems contain O-rings that lose their integrity if the car isn't driven regularly. Letting the car sit for months on end is courting disaster. (Also, the pump needs to be primed before the vehicle is started.)

i think active suspension was inveted by Williams Renault F1, and it took a year to get it right, this is the reason N Mansell was WC in 1992, not 1991, unless this is something else different from Williams active suspension,Renault engineers record a pathway of the track recording bumps and level surface, making the car less difficult and accurate to drive in corners.

I have it on my Active Soarer 1992. Its better worked out as a true active, with hydropneumatic system with no springs. The use of skyhook means the sensors compensate for the dips drops yaw attitude via G sensors and gyroscopes. Added to this is 4 wheel steering. It works very well, incredibly smooth with excellent control (unlike a citroen) and outrageous handling. Sadly only 650 were ever made when Toyota in their infinite wisdom pulled the plug on it. Its reliable and using it in 2013.

Thought about this believe it or not, but just was not smart enough to visualize/invent such a suspension system. My initial thoughts were that this would add too much weight and air suspension already does a good job. This system would also require the car to be tuned for each driver, as each drivers habits differ. Cool idea Benz, let's see how it works in life.

Great technology from Mercedes, but Citroen introduced something much better and much more sophisticated already in 1994! My -98 model Citroen Xantia Activa has the wellknown Citroen-comfort combined with true sportscar handling. The system has worked flawlessly for over 14 years now, and the general build-quality of the car is second to none. Check it out! Also check out the swedish "Elk test" or "Moose test" and look for number one :-)

ABC suspension is great in a new Mercedes but a older one, I would change for a coil suspension set up, ABC in the long run turns into a money pit for most people that want a Mercedes but Don't know of all the components to keep their vehicle evenly leveled off the ground. Coil suspensions last about one hundred thousand miles before needing replacement, ABC unit goes bad, if the owner continues to drive the car with one side not properly leveled the entire system will need to be fixed, this what causes people to get rid of the automobile, then it ends up sitting on the ground like a 1964 Chevy Impala with hydraulics.

Where you are living you should try the yelp app, search for customers reviews on the app to help you with a german independent shop. If you take it to a local Mercedes Benz dealership it's out of Warranty, most likely your vehicle is because it's a 2007, 13 years old the Mercedes benz dealership, will charge you an astronomical amount of money to service your hydraulic suspension. Just to replace one is about $1200-$1500 per wheel not including labor. When you replace one hydraulic you have to replace the other. Mercedes recommended you do it in pairs so you are looking at about $2400, $3000 dollars for a set of them including labor. Hopefully this is not the case with your Mercedes S Class. If it is and you have the money no problem have it done, if not your S Class in the long run will be sitting on the ground.
