31:20 I’d like to add to this also like you said. Finland has a definition of policy to defend at all costs, but aggression/attacking is not something that’s going to happen. It’s on the name even - The Finnish Defence Forces. Also, FDF has done joint military training long before these times with America(and others). Even when I was in service back in 2013, we had American troops training with us in the unit I’m in. So it’s unlikely to have American mil bases built in here. Garrisons that have been here since long time ago are more than suitable. Still.. **knocks on wood**

You're right about Finland wanting to join Nato more than Sweden. Nato-support had gone up in Sweden as well but they had a pretty long tradition of neutralism so it wasn't as big as Finland. Main reason why Sweden was so badly beaten by Russia in Finland in 1808 was that they were also fighting the Danish and Norwegians who were allied with Napoleon. USSR was NOT allied with Nazi Germany. It's a lie in misinterpretation. An alliance obliges the parties to protect each other in the event of an attack by a third party or to help each other in the event of an attack on a third party. Germany and the USSR signed a non-aggression pact, i.e. pledged not to take hostile action against each other. The division of Poland into occupation zones tho according to the secret protocol to the pact cannot be called an agression of allied nations, there weren't allied. The actions of the USSR during this period of time must be taken without reference to the actions of Germany, both countries were preparing for a big war, the USSR leadership understood their conflict was inevitable and tried to move the buffer zones as far as possible to the West. Stalin had a choice either to give all of Poland to Germany, or to give himself a head start. I would choose the second option too.

There's a good reason for that. Having US troops and military aircraft stationed and training so close to the Russian border in peace time is very provocative.
Russia has always tested the limits. They fly airplanes inside Norwegian airspace, hold exercises near the Norwegian border and patrol with submarines and ships as a show of force all the time. It's part of their game, but you're gambling with lives when you openly provoke them.
Also the US, specifically, has not been known for fair play in wars and do much the same as Russia did with Ukraine, to be honest. They started the war both in Vietnam and Iraq on lies and deceit, and tortured and imprisoned people for years without a trial in Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo. They are also known for using mercenaries killing civilians and intelligence agencies to stage coups in countries they don't agree with politically.
Don't get me wrong. I'm happy Finland and Sweden is joining NATO, and I'm definitely glad Norway is a member. Ukraine will be welcome to join too, when they finally get peace. Russia will have to submit to that one way or another, no matter who leads the country when this is done.

US contractors were in many if not most instances brought to court (not local but their own), compare that to Wagner group members or assassins (Litvinenko and Skripal case in UK, Vrbetice sabotage in CZ, sabotages, and attempted murder in BG) who got heroic welcome and medals by 'ex' KGB president and regime of RF. These claims were falsified, because there were no attacks. Johnsen used this to get political support for an escalation of the war in Vietnam. This is all well documented and verified.
In the Iraqi war, I'm old enough to have seen the propaganda myself. I remember very well George Bush and his military advisors showing how weapons of mass destruction were moved around using satellite photos. It all seemed very convincing, but all lies off course. They had no evidence Iraq had WMDs or that Saddam Hussain had links to al-Qaeda. Without these lies, I doubt America would get the support they needed to invade. Attack was stopped by order of General HQ to the old yr. 1920 border line, in front of Leningrads first defences - except few small line adjustments. Not a single grenade was fired to the city from Finnish fronts, not even to 'The Road of Life', it was strictly forbidden. FAF wasn't allowed to fly in the airspace of 'motti'...

The map of 1808 is incorrect in the video: Russia had already taken the south-eastern parts of Finland in 1721 and 1743, meaning the towns of Vyborg (Viipuri/Viborg), Hamina/Fredrikshamn, Lappeenranta/Villmanstrand and Savonlinna/Nyslott were no longer under Swedish control. The treaty of 1721 is the Treaty of Nystad (Uusikaupunki in Finnish) and of 1743 is the Treaty of Åbo (Turku in Finnish).
Also the map of 1917 (and 1940) is incorrect: Vyborg (Viipuri/Viborg), Karelian Isthmus areas north-west of Lake Ladoga came to belong to Finland, as they had been during the Russian rule a part of the Grand Duchy of Finland.

About what you thought in the end of the video (as I understood) about US troops to set up permanent bases in the territory of Finland I disagree with. We have been greatly dealing and training with Nato (also US) forces for more than 10 years already. Putin knows and russian military leaders knows that it would be the end for them if they would try to attack Finland. We have a great benefits from the terrain at southeastern Finland for our warfare tactics and actually the main ideology in building the Finnish Defence Forces since the end of the second world war has been that we might not be able to stop russians but we would be able to be so lethal that would make them to think is there any sane for them to try (again).

Important to remember is that there's been a first line of defence in force for Finland since 2009 as it's a member of EU; the mutual defence clause as laid out in article 42.7. It states that armed aggression towards any member state should be answered by the other members with all the means in their power. One major difference between that part of the EU treaty and NATO is the US, as Russia doesn't seem to find many things a threat unless the US is somehow involved. Even with the EU, we have often relied on each other. Sweden is fortunate to have Finland nearby, but that means we're very aware of their national security. It's why Sweden's government said that "Finland's business is ours, and ours is theirs" when it came to applying to NATO. In other words; if they go, so do we.
For those interested in one of the most tense moments between Sweden and Russia before we were an EU member, look to the case of U137, the Russian submarine that ran aground on the outskirts of a Swedish military area in 1981. With nuclear warheads on board. :) This link has English subtitles but, fair warning, it's about 1hr 20min long. It's an official Swedish documentary.

The creed on Russia is complicated. Russia wanted to control Finland, either indirectly or directly. The creed wasn't as strong back then, but it became far stronger during the rule of Stalin, who massacred karelians that lived under Russia within the mid East down to South. Karelians was a small locale population that lived in Finland and Russia, that had language very similar to finnish language. Since Russia desired ethnic cleansing, karelians like many other minorities like estonians, lithuanians, latvians, polish and ukrainians were massacred as a goal of keeping Russia mostly homogenous population for ethno nationalistic goals. The diplomacy terms that was mentioned from Stalin was after Finland had pushed borderlines almost to the shores of St. Petersburgh. Stalin couldn't get negotiations at all, because Finland was playing time for karelians who spoke finnish on previously Russia occupied area to escape to Finland. Karelians nowadays are mostly spread out in Finland in terms of genetics, but are likely still living somewhere in the East.

A kind of inside joke in the Nordic countries is that Russia belongs to the Nordic countries (especially Sweden)
    (Wikipedia)
[The Rus' people (Old East Slavic: Рѹсь; Modern Belarusian, Russian, Rusyn, and Ukrainian: Русь, romanised: Rus'; Old Norse: Garðar; Greek: Ῥῶς, romanised: Rhos) were an ethnic group in early medieval eastern Europe. The scholarly consensus holds that they were originally Norse people(vikings), mainly originating from present-day Sweden, settling and ruling along the river-routes between the Baltic and the Black Seas from around the 8th to 11th centuries AD. They formed a state known in modern historiography as Kievan Rus', which was initially a multiethnic society where the ruling Norsemen merged and assimilated with East Slavic, Baltic and Finnic tribes, ending up with Old East Slavic as their common language. The elite of Kievan Rus' was still familiar with Old Norse until their assimilation by the second half of the 11th century, and in rural areas vestiges of Norse culture persisted as late as the 14th and early 15th centuries.]

Contrary to some I suspect have commented on your take around 6:20 - I won't bash you. It's unfair to expect someone originally from way across the Atlantic to know intimate details of our recent history. The video is incorrect on a key point of WWII and woefully poorly researched in a few others. I'll stick to WWII here, initally.
With regards to Sweden's official stance in regards to the Winter War+Continuation War (Germany+Finland v Soviet Union) Sweden declared itself not NEUTRAL but, "Not actively participating in hostilities".
What did we do in fact do, though? Essentially empty our mobilization stockpiles and shipped, flew and drove it over our Northeastern land-border. 9500 volunteers were by some happenstance allowed to be trained up "Just in case" and somehow found their way over the Baltic. Meanwhile on our Western border with Norway anyone able to traverse it attempting to escape the Nazi occupation was welcomed in. And many unlucky Wehrmacht that happened to follow along mysteriously got lost, never to be heard from again. I'd continue, but that'll suffice.
Furthermore, I'll invite you to delve into Sweden during the Cold War, in particular the strategies to be employed in the event of a, then Soviet, amphibian landing attempt across the Baltic.
I won't spoil too much, but I'll tease some by giving away the name of the Strategic Naval Battleplan to be carried out by Swedish Destroyer groups led by the Halland Class accompanied by earlier somewhat less capable vessels.
    Metod: Ära
    Translation?
    Method: Honor
You'll find essentially identical ones for the Airforce, and Land forces.
To sum it up in a sentence - Stay the fuck out or we will wreak such havoc of Biblical proportions upon any and all foreign invaders in a both hilariously and terrifyingly short time that it simply will not be worth your time, resources and dead.
And in the highly unlikely event that someone did enter our borders, land or sea they'd pay for every inch in much the same fashion.
In addition, of course, the partisan activities would inevitably ensue.
Some additional terms - BKan Artillery, A32 Lansen, Arne Beurling (WWII), HMS Orion, Swedish Nuclear Program/and or CBR.
    Have a nice day :)

06:15 Let me preface this by saying that I hold you in high regard, and that I am merely excited at the "potential" of this fictional, objective scenario! Ok?
IF Sweden doesn't join NATO together with Finland, that would practically GIVE INCENTIVE to Russia to conquer Sweden in order to retain control over the ports in the Baltic sea - it would separate Finland from the rest of the alliance (beyond the frozen border in the northern north)(strategically, this could be catastrophic for the NATO, as Finland would become needlessly difficult to protect, and defend (and then there's the complications to the logistics)), and allow Russia to contest control over the entirety of the Baltic sea (only in theory, but the numbers, Mason, what do they mean)..! ... My good Sir, have you stopped to count the number of NATO countries that have ports in the Baltic sea? Imagine now, that Russia would have to ceed landmass back to Finland to restore the former borders to the way they were before the Russian invasion of Finland..! Why not force their hand on Kaliningrad while you are at by closing the borders of all NATO allies to Russian personell and equipment, thus forcing Russia to ship personell and equipment through the Arctic circle..? ... Yes, there would be war (prolly nukes since the existence of "Russia the pitiful" would be threatened), but Russia cares more about their egos and "pocket money" than the lives of their taxpayers, let alone the taxpayers of foreign ("hostile") nations..!
Maybe I'm crazy, but I might argue against that..! 😅🤣

    • @Jahvec
      @Jahvec Před rokem

Well, theres nothing wrong in though and what ifs. Sweden is extremely hard to separate, since that would need to be done either via sea or air. Swedish forces are offset to just those (meaning Swedens focus is mainly navy and air force). Finnish focus on other hand is manpower with jaegers (infantry) and artillery. Not to mention I think us Nordics would go above and beyond what Poland is doing for Ukraine, there would probably be high number of volunteers from Nordics that isn't facing an attack if they do not join the war out right (still got my suspicions about Swedens government lifting their fingers thanks to winter war). Well, in case of Finland and Norway being in NATO and Sweden being neutral, I guess it would be Norways and Finlands turn to shelter Swedish families and sign up as volunteers while governments nudge their shoulders.
I also doubt Russia would ever ceed any territory back, and Finland hasn't pursued the issue either to this day (Russia hasn't exactly taken good care of that territory).
