  • After owning this tripod for less than a year, it started to exhibit problems with one of the legs.
So, I investigated to see if it was something simple, if it could be fixed, and if it would happen again.
    Buyer beware.

I have a Benro travel tripod that weighs 2.3 pounds and I have one leg section that the plastic retaining clip shifts from time to time and needs to be replaced. The problem is that I can never remember which section it is when I get back home. Other then that it is a great light weight tripod that has traveled the world. I guess we just have to remember to not be heavy handed when extending and retracting the legs. The alternative is something like a Peak Design tripod for $500-600. For what my Benro cost, I can buy several retaining clip sets and be well ahead of the game. Some day I'll need to contact Benro and get those clips. Thanks for the review. I have been looking at the Sirui as an even lighter and smaller alternative to my Benro.

Thank you for showing these parts in detail. My Sirui T-004SK also has a broken leg shim/stopper, and it appears to be made of the same thin clear plastic. This material doesn't seem to be up to the task. I didnt expect much from the T-004SK (i literally bought it only for the VA-5 head), but the significance of this shim is enlightening. I was considering buying the Traveler 7c, but if the Travelers also have these fragile shims that's kind of a deal breaker. I've watched disassembly videos of other tripods and they appear to have thicker nylon or delrin shims. It's kind of crazy that i'm judging these expensive carbon fiber tripods by a 2 cent component, but that appears to a weak link. It's great to hear that Sirui hooked you up with a replacement part though.

Hi there. You're welcome, and yes, I find these cheap shims definitely the weakest point of this tripod. I still use my Traveler 5C, but I have to be conscious of not slamming the legs in when I retract them.

Very useful video for me, personally I'm looking for a light compact and not too low tripod to carry with me, from what I've seen in the reviews all the cheap options available seem a bit delicate, and this Sirui 5C seen the reviews seems to be better than similar others in the same price range.
Now there is also the "new" version of the 5C or the Sirui 5CX with a head that on paper is better, for a slightly higher cost I think I will take the Sirui 5CX, despite that small plastic part which can be a problem if it breaks, but if they provide the replacement part for me it is a relative defect

At this price for a carbon fibre tripod, I guess that's just the unfortunate reality. On my K&F BA225, the top section that holds the ball head completely snapped off! - I had to use one of those adhesives that you mix to glue it back on as superglue wouldn't' hold it, knock on wood it's been holding well since :)

Thank you so much for this You Tube video! I had trouble with one of my Surui tripod legs bending and collapsing on me, as well as one of the legs and column looking crooked. I thought it was something to do with the monopod/center column section since I had trouble understanding how to assemble/operate it. After watching your video, I started cleaning and detaching the legs and, low and behold, the plastic shin for the top section is broken. I will now contact Surui and see if I can get a replacement part. On another note, I find the twist locks don't work very well for me, they frequently come loose, as do the screws at the base of the legs, so I have to keep tightening them.

Awesome!… Or rather, awesome that you found my video and it helped… Not awesome that your shims broke too. But I’m glad my troubles could help you find a solution.
I also really don’t like twist locks, I much prefer the flip lock style, and out of all six or eight of my tripods, the 5C is the only one that I have that has twist locks. So it works for what it is, but I still use it, stays in my car and it’s used at least on a weekly basis.
      Cheers!

@@MarcusHutsell Thanks Marcus! I just emailed Surui and included feedback on those other two issues. I'll let you know their response.

This happens to all twist lock tripods. I have a Siri AM-284 as well as a FLM CP30-L4II that cost me 3x the Siri, and after 2 years of use that price on the lower section became slightly damaged. But it’s a cheap fix. The more expensive flip lock…once it goes, it’s gone.

Don't let that shim breakage let you down. Even the $1k plus tripods from Really Right Stuff uses plastic shims. If it's plastic it can break.

Thank you! Yeah, I always wondered if the higher end products use plastic or maybe better carbon-fiber on the internal components. I do hate a lot of the plastic on important parts, but I guess it's the way of the world......unless I become a billionaire-mogul-world-leader and start teaching the humans of the world to get better at not-using plastic and maybe making things that last longer. But I'm getting older and I'm not entirely sure I can get to "billionaire" status in the next few years. Food for thought. Cheers!

hmmmmmm........interesting. I've never 3d printed anything, and these pieces are fairly thin, but I'll bet it could be done.

yeah, it takes a bit of babying to make this tripod last, but I've still got mine, and still use it!
