Welcome back to the studio everyone! This week, we're gonna start from the ground up and practice some concepts that we can use to play more harmonic material in our solos. In other words, I'm gonna show you eight different exercises that all focus around resolving lines, be they scale or arpeggio, into chord voicings.
The chord voicings are all going to be coming from the major 6 diminished scale since it offers us a lot of great options for tension, resolution, and most importantly: movement!
We'll start off playing the diatonic arpeggios in C major and then resolving those in three different directions: down a step, up a step, and up a third, to either the on chord or off chord from the 6 diminished scale. Then we'll practice the same concept using super common bebop melodic devices like approach notes and enclosures.
Finally, I'll show you how to practice doing this using Barry Harris' rules for both descending major and dominant scale lines. This week is all about building technique when it comes to playing more harmonically active! Next week, we'll be putting these ideas into practice over a standard tune. Make sure to sound off in the comments and let me know what tune you'd like to see covered!

Very nice. Do you have Guitar Pro files in your Patreon?

Unfortunately, no. I'm a sibelius user. Best I could do is provide music xml file which I believe can be imported to GP

Cool video. Question about exercise 1. You say "resolving to some chord from the Cmajor6 diminished scale." Does that mean you treat the flatted six as a scale degree and, if so, does that mean there are eight diatonic chords? For example, is the triad chord built from the second degree a regular D minor triad, or does it become diminished, because the third above the F natural is now A flat?

So you could do that but I'm sort of mixing the major scale and the maj6 diminished in these examples. I especially like playing with the minor IV that's in the 6 diminished scale.

@dsg_studio are you using the tonic / dominant approach Harris uses to build harmony off of the diminshed 6 scale - i.e., Imaj6 and V7b9 - or are you using other chords?

@@adampecsek resolving diatonic chords from major into either on or off chord from 6 diminished.
