Unless hes an ambulance chaser hes staying in a hotel that he would not be able to pick. And these safes are not secure. By any means. The hotel can easily open them as they have to do when guests forget their password or check out without retrieving their belongings. Which happens a lot. They have to have a procedure to open them. At some point maybe the night guy has to call and get the procedure from the maintenance guy at 3am due to an emergency. So now the front desk guy knows how to do it and no one really knows he knows. Happens all the time.

Hi Harry, After locking the safe, another precaution you should take is wiping each button column with your thumb. This prevents the use of the invisible ink pen and ultra violet light method of determining the correct buttons to press - but not the sequence. Hotel staff have been known to use this trick to access hotel safes. Regards, Brian.

Hey Lock Picking Lawyer, I found 2 related flaws with the Abus Bordo combination locks, I was hoping to tell you about them so you can look into them. Flaw one is that the false gates are easy to find but if you line up 4 false gates in a row it becomes obvious if you are in a non false gate. You can also feel the difference between false gates and the real gate, even without the last step this reduces the number of possible combinations from 10,000 to around 625. The second flaw is that you can use the location of the false gates to decode where the real gates are. There are three different patterns to decode, the first dial, both middle dials are the same, and the last dial. No matter the combination, the pattern of false gates is always the same it will be like "not, false, not, not, false, not, false, false, false, true," so if you can can initially find a false gate on each dial and about half the digits are false gates. As far as I know no one else has discovered these flaws though I'm sure anyone else who looks at these locks with a keen eye will be able to spot these flaws. Anyways, love your videos and hope to see one about this in the future.

Concurring with +Nathan Fielure: guessing passwords you're not meant to have is computer trespass in most jurisdictions. If you want to notify, do it in a letter after you've left the premises, and in a way that doesn't admit that you actually used the administrative password. Being prosecuted in an innocuous case like this is unlikely, and a good lawyer can always make a case that the law shouldn't apply, but it's not worth the risk of admitting to breaking into a computer system and hoping the manager, owner, police and/or jury won't behave in a way that you find unreasonable.
PS: "It was easy to guess" is not a defense: it's the digital equivalent of saying "I was just seeing if his locks were hard to pick." You've heard it before: "don't pick locks you don't own." It applies to passwords too.

Having been a jewel thief, arrested in Beverly Hills at the Peninsula Beverly Hills Hotel in 1996, I can confirm.
I did not open any room safe in this manner, but they are not very well designed.
At the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, I opened one by removing it from its mounting, on particle board, and simply bounced it on the bed to cause the spring loaded locking mechanism to bounce out of place, and then turned the locking knob to open.
I did it this way, because the hotel had discovered my previous method, which was to simply move the plastic border around the locking mechanism and insert a piece of wire through the gap, and push on the back of the teeter-totter type locking pawl, which it kept in place with a spring on the back side.
They replaced the plastic with metal, but I had previously taken one of them and dismantled it.
When I saw how they had changed the plastic, I remembered how the locking system worked internally and realized I could bounce it open if I removed it from its mounting, which was poorly done.😏
I got into the rooms by making a core key to remove the IC core from any room and replacing it with one of my own. They did rekey them once, but I just made another.
This is all documented, as my trial was printed in the LA paper.

Had a similar experience way back when I was a young lad, set the safe code to “9111” (I wanted a Porsche 911 back then) but by pressing the lock key after previously locking the safe and then entering “1234” it unlocked. Same sort of system in that the master code had not been erased!

Traveling through South East Asia 2010, I tried to set the code in my hotel in Malaysia with my birth date (easy to remember and I always use it).
After many unsuccessful attempts, I called room service who then told me that code is what they use to open every safe in the hotel.

  • @WhereWhatHuh
    @WhereWhatHuh Před 6 lety +2

The admin password can only be changed once.
It can also be 000000 or 111111 depending on the vintage of the safe.
A sharp tap from a hammer on the top edge of the door will often cause the limit switches to make contact, causing the lock to re-adjust the bolts. they will return to the home or open position.
As a last resort, a small hole can be drilled on the side of the safe -- it is mild steel -- about one inch in from the front and about 2" down from the top. This will permit you to push on the bolt with a screwdriver.
Remember that a safe keeps honest people honest. It does not protect your valuables. Do not take expensive jewelry or other valuables on vacation with you. If you have something truly valuable, ask the hotel to lock it in a "bank" at the front desk. You are still at the mercy of hotel staff, but there is at least a certain liability for the hotel if you use the "bank."

Came here again after watching [1169] to refresh my memory. It occurs to me that the hotel wants to be able to access the safe if the guest forgets their password, or leaves with the safe locked. If there are 300 rooms in the hotel they are not about to reset the "super" password to their own number. Lazy? Yup. And if they did reset it they would probably be brilliant and use the room number as the new code.🤣

Luckily if you put the wrong code in serval times it only locks you out for a few minutes and resets the timeout. It took a few hours but I finally got it opened.
