- There are two worlds of photography (1. on line only and 2. professional-covering many genres), and print is important no matter which world you find yourself in. Daniel Milnor discusses why it's important to print your work, how it helps you edit more effectively and some tips for printing your work.

I don't think I have Ever disagreed with Anything this man has Ever said on the subject of photography.
A true inspiration and a generous sharer of Very Important knowledge..
Thank you! 👍
I'm just making observations after ten years of working in the print world. Glad you are finding something of interest.
That's funny because the entire time I was cutting this thing I was thinking "Maybe this is too long."
@@DANIELMILNOR505 Your 'observations' are pure gold Daniel. You teach and advise from experience and that can only help us to
1) Be better photographers
2) Be aware of how the industry works and
3) Be prepared!
@@DANIELMILNOR505 Too long? I'd Love to hear you doing a seminar/talk on modern day photojournalism/story telling/photo essays... kind of putting it all into one pot! 😊
Tony, couldn't agree more.
I love Daniel's cut-to-the-chase speaking style. 10 minutes - Boom! Everything you need to know.
I do too!
that is HUGELY appreciated
You speak to me from my heart Daniel.
Only when you hold the print in your hand, the creative process of photographing is finished.
It is a learning process to select your pictures and to show only the best pictures, printing promotes this learning process. And only the picture in hand or on the wall, ensures a long attention with the picture.
For many years now I have been writing and doing workshops on fine art printing, currently for the Leica Akademie in Germany. And that's exactly what my words are to my participants.
Best Thomas
I am so glad I stumbled on Milnor's page, wherever that was. He puts into words what I have been trying to wrap my head around with respect to the photography I want to do and the way I want to go about it. It's taken me a while to realize a simple point - people use the word editing so differently. In the online world he mentions, it's sitting at a coffee shop with a laptop and Lightroom working on an image. With Milnor's photography, editing relates to story and narrative.
Very very good message and one nobody is talking about. We all get slack and just used to gazing at our screens, but to actually choose the images, edit, select and print them brings in a whole new dynamic. Thanks for reminding me it is time I did some more printing. Philip
I can absolutely relate to his reasoning. I started printing some of my photos, Because I felt they just "Collect Digital Dust", However most (if not all) of the prints were 8x10 prints for hanging on the wall. I absolutely agree with the fact that printing required critical editing. I can't begin to describe how satisfying is to hold a print of your photo.
I thought of printing more and more of my photos, And have a cohesive photo shoots that have a common narrative, Then printing them. And I would love to have some practical examples by Daniel on how to create a photo magazine with Blurb's tools. I tried to use their software, But the photo book templates are too "Book"-ish, And magazines are too text oriented - And I was looking something more of his style of printing. A story magazine with a narrative, a travel magazine from my last trip - Etc.
He has a few videos at Blurb but the production quality is... How can I say that delicately? mmm... Disastrous :)
Thank you Daniel, watched this last week... Started printing again, started walking again, shooting until MY BATTERY WAS DEAD. Last night with all electronics off started writing out my theme's and idea's on paper. Printed some of the shots and started to sequence them to see if my lenses and my angles are telling the story I want. In other words: Thank you for helping me get back to being grounded and walking around my island of Aruba looking for stories to be told in an encapsulated format. Hope ta make something worthwhile... Hope
I've subscribed and bookmarked this page - whenever I need to re inspire myself, this is where I'll come.

As someone who teaches I think Daniel is a natural communicator. Followed his channel based on these. He deserves a big audience.
I'm just putting this stuff out. I don't have a following goal, but I do have a goal of better understanding how to make films. Glad you found something worth your time.
The stuff youre putting out is good.
I hate to be biased, but Daniel is my favorite guest speaker on this show. Succinct, engaging, and entertaining. I couldn't ask for more
Thanks we love him too
I'm sure you will get tired of me. Everyone does. But glad you are enjoying it.
Daniel you make concise, inspirational videos , I print for myself all the time looking back on these magazines postcards etc will be like finding a shoe box of forgotten prints in the loft !
Scanning old prints, slides, journals, family histories, etc. is so much fun. And makes for great book fodder.
Best video ever. Great clarification on editing, printing and publishing. Succinct, smart and really timely. Thanks Daniel!
🙏
I love this information so much as I have digital images and stored on cards. This is what I need to know what to do with them. Excellent, and I appreciate it so much, thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
This was the word I needed to hear. Thank you Dan!
Excellent video... I have started printing recently and you are right, printing will push you to make cut throat decisions about your photographs since you are financially committed (and that hurts if it's not done right). My next project is Coffeetable book. Once I have decided, I was surprised to find that I just have good "images", but nothing more to it. Now I am chasing something more than a image to make this book.
Thank you, Daniel. Interestingly and convincingly put. Tight editing, sequencing, and just learning to develop that perspective about one's work as a finished product in print can be immensely valuable to one's growth, not just as a maker of images but also and perhaps more as a coherent storyteller.
I think we all have stories to tell, which is a good thing, and has been part of our species since the time of cave paintings.
Thanks, that was interesting and thought provoking.
Thank you Daniel and Marc for bringing this to us. Much food for thought! Kevin
Thanks for watching kevin
Marc..you first taught me how to get good photos and now you're showing me the way to present my story properly...thank you so much.. I really needed this..
So glad to hear Bess!

David is an excellent instructor. Thanks.

this was so so good. every word resonated
🙌
I need to start an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of some of these that I plan to revisit. I've been looking for this one for two days. Editing and sequencing...
Haha make a playlist it’s easier
A ton of useful information. Thank you.
🙏
Thank you for this! I am currently in a pursuit on how to print photographs especially on a zine. And this is just the talk i needed to hear most especially on sequencing and creating an actual story with the photos I made! More Dan Milnor content!!
I have a VERY cool Zine collaboration project going on at the moment. I will make a film about it in the coming weeks. Zines are fantastic, inexpensive and impactful.
Daniel Milnor thanks Dan! I appreciate the fact that you’re taking the time to respond to me! Also, do you use Blurb to create your zines? If so would love to see a video on your process while making one. Thanks!!
@@erwnalejo I use a variety of means to make Zines, including Blurb. Here is an example. shifter.media/creative-essay-magazine-issue-four/
Great video.
Excellent! Thank you! 😊
🙏
Thanks for the awesome advice!
🙏
Thank you for your time and videos. What is the name of the cards in a can that you mentioned?
For the last 6 Months, ‘editing’ has been the bane of my existence :)
It can be, but there's joy in it too.
Perhaps this has already been covered in a previous video and I’ve missed it, but I would really enjoy a video dedicated to more details about the culling and editing process. That is a major struggle for me and I’ve been trying to overcome it for a while now.
Am working on this. Just need to find work that is released and the right fit for this purpose.
Great video nice job
Damn, still feel like that person should have known about them because that's what we are lacking, visual literacy. It's like a writer not knowing who Borges is or a painter not knowing who Monet is. Everyone can take pictures now but it's important to know who made it possible to be where we are
Yes, maybe the two most iconic photographers of the 20th century.
Well done. Thank you!👍👍👍🤪
I think Digital has forced Photographers to learn how to electronically "develop" images, but the skills of editing a body of work and sequencing for print. This process is the next stage of a Photographer's craft.
👍
Anyone know a good software to sequence your prints
This was another great video. Do you have any resources you'd recommend specifically targeting sequencing, storytelling and probably most importantly, editing? Thanks!
Am working on something...
What film is those Black and White slides?
So true. Did a shoot two weeks ago in NYC. Shot 1500 images. First edit to 200; second edit to 35; final edit to 16. Entering a competition w those images as a series and still need to do a tight edit of 10. My undergrad is in English. Profs would say, to cut your essays you need to "kill your darlings" - those great, beautifully written lines that, well, don't work w the overall scheme of the work. Same holds true in photography. Painful, but sometimes we gotta let them go.....Sequencing: Well, that's an art in and of its self. MMM
You are right. Editing is it’s own process and requires willingness to select only what works to tell you’re story - as you said
What software are you sequencing on?
This is the very true. Photography without printing is an unfinished work. An unborn baby.
So true!
I just found the channel and I've been watching the videos, this is gold!
I have a question maybe is too late I hope you guys see it.
You just mentioned that you edit your photos while still in the travel, in usually leave my photos to "rest" for a while before editing or choosing the keepers, sometimes if I hurry in editing them I find layer that it was not the best one. What do you think?
Yes I do is bit of both. Sometimes I’m so excited I. Any wait but always review when I get back home too. In the end it’s what works best for you.
I was wondering if you do a tutorial video on how to do a good blurb book magazine?
it's on our list!
Hi I really like your work is there a way I could buy some of you magasines or prints ! I want to buy it a print for my wall. Also magasine I am reader I love magasines and books. If my writing I apologize because my old labtop keyboard is weird. Luckily my new labtop is on its way
Good presentation :) I miss the example from you that you mentioned killed off one of your photo books, maybe a subject for a future video? Thanks cheers Jan
😎
Ha, I knew someone was going to catch that! Yes, a story about religion in Italy and an editor read it the wrong way based on several factors. One, she wasn't paying attention. Two, she didn't' read the copy. Three, I put the wrong photograph at the front and it blew up in my face. I'll explain.
Thank you for this video. What's site for printing postcards presented in a metal box ?
Hello. I believe Daniel is referring to self-printing on the Hahnemuhle paper. E.g., see: bhpho.to/2M3LHIO
@@CollectedLight1 Thank you !
Hey Jessica, it's not a site actually it's a brand of paper. www.adorama.com/ihume4630.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjwt5zsBRD8ARIsAJfI4BhrZwne6Yh4CPS8LtwOMC9UUsc4qcsdivRz70rYp8b12tZv2U1KyBUaAipqEALw_wcB . I print them on a cheap, desktop printer.
Hi Daniel. Would you mind telling me which company you use for printing postcards? Thank you man. Keep up the great work and great advices.
He mentioned it was Hannemüle.
I use this paper and print them myself on an inexpensive desktop printer. www.adorama.com/ihume4630.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjwt5zsBRD8ARIsAJfI4BhrZwne6Yh4CPS8LtwOMC9UUsc4qcsdivRz70rYp8b12tZv2U1KyBUaAipqEALw_wcB
Who printed the magazine? I'm hunting for a good printer for one.
The internet has made me lazy. My old printer died years ago so I stopped printing altogether and just uploaded photos online. I recently bought a printer that only puts out 4x6 landscapes and it has already changed the way I frame my shots.
What about a a photo zine
I don’t think I edit as well as I should, but I’ve realised however many photos I take on a trip somewhere the final selection which goes on my Flickr or website always comes down to 30 or less, which I’m pretty sure comes from having done most photography before digital. You got out the pack of photos which came back, that was all you had to look at or show, and that was always enough. 😂
Same for me in darkroom you are always economically minded. I carry that over to digital
Editing is difficult. And a true professional will turn your head inside out with how they edit your work. Practice, practice, practice, and a trusted second opinion doesn't hurt.
I added this as a comment for a specific viewer but thought this might resonate with some of you. shifter.media/creative-essay-magazine-issue-four/Lots of ways to make Zines. I have an ongoing Zine/magazine which is a tribute to the original Life Magazine, a publication that was hugely influential in me becoming a photographer. I was published in Life exactly ONE time. However, I took this influence and created a Zine series titled ESSAY. Printed in two sizes at the same time.
What you said is that it's not print that is important, but editing. You can shoot 10 rolls of C-41 film, go to lab, develop and print them .You end with 360 photos from vacation. How professional is this print? It is print! It is pro! Sure, industry want prints, but industry is old and slow changing. Posting on internet does not make you and less (or more) professional. You just chose different medium. Putting it into different perspective: it's like choosing diapositive (slide I think is proper english term) vs negative. How is one more or less professional then the other?
Printing is seen as pro because most of pro photographs are going into printed media: newspapers, books, adverts. But all those are moving into digital space. More and more newspapers are read online instead of printed. People look for photo books and photo galleries in internet, instead of going to bookstore.
Yes, except taking photos and putting them together for exhibition, whether book format or gallery, are two DIFFERENT things.
👏👏👏

The proof is in the printing.
so true!
Wow, I admire your work, what an incredible video. It will be great if you looked at my channel to see if you like any of my videos. Keep up the amazing work! I look forward to your next video.
Thank you ¡¡¡ Brad Pitt.
I wish. I'd be kicking back in my palace......
A diamond among the utter shite photography channels on utoob.
Great stuff.
A photographer who doesn't know who Robert Frank is ... Really !!!
Really. Ran into another a few years ago who didn't know Annie Leibowitz, Richard Avedon or Sebastiao Salgado.
@@DANIELMILNOR505 These three alone have created iconic images, which are indelible witness of the human experience in the 20th century ... Sad ...
@@pierrebouchard4289 Well I think it only speaks to how someone can approach photography these days. The allure of the online like is what pulls many folks to the medium, whereas back in my day we didn't have any of these avenues. There was less reward outside of the images.
In (some of) their defense, I've always been terrible with names. I know there are photographers whose work I love, but if a name got tossed out in a discussion, I might not immediately recognize.
@@sbhopper8511 Oh ya, me too. But I was also fortunate enough to have been FORCED to endure classes in both art and photography history. But meet me at a party and no way I can remember anyone or anything. Guilty.
