    In this episode of my abandoned building renovation, I show how to build a really simple DIY pendant light or chandelier, with no wires showing, for your kitchen island. I made the light fixture out of aluminum C-channel and welded the aluminum with no welder - just using an easy DIY brazing process. I used chip on board (COB) LED strips in the pendant light. The COB LED strips are great because they give a continuous line of light…no dots! I then used strips of acrylic as a diffuser for the LED strips, and a threaded lamp pipe to hang the light fixture and hide the wires.

      How are you liking the 4000k COBs. A few months ago we installed 4000k can lights (which are really pucks about 2" thick) but suffice to say the 4000k made us feel like we were living in a laboratory. We sent them back and got the 3000 or 3500 warm whites and it was 100% better. Still very bright at highest setting but not that sheer pure white that 4000k gives.

    Super cool. I can't help myself but to throw this out there: If building this for a smaller space, with a lower, white ceiling, you can flip it over and leave off the diffusion step. Painting the frame white and adjusting the distance to the ceiling. The ceiling becomes a reflector and would likely throw the light pretty far. Just my 0.02. Great video.

      @@modustrial I'm all about getting soft shadows by bouncing light off of large surfaces.
      The fixture would have to be a fair distance from the ceiling surface - I'd guess 18" minimum to get any decent spread. I may slap some LED strips on a channel this afternoon and see what kind of distances would be needed. Thanks for the inspiration!

    I'm a professional lighting designer (LC) so naturally, I really enjoyed this posting. Great job, looks better/cleaner than similar, commercially purchased products!! I completely agree with you regarding the over-pricing of most fixtures these days. I have access to fixture which, unfortunately, most of the general public will never see and the associated cost plus installation is ridiculous. Most LED strips are dimmable these days (reference driver used); perhaps consider this simple solution for managing the brightness? For future reference, perhaps consider purchasing a lower temperature (kelvin) strip? I lean towards 3000k for residential applications (2700k is closer to standard incandescent lamping but casts a definite "yellow" hue and not always play well with cooler-colored surroundings). Feel free to reach out if you have any lighting questions, always fun to a support a good cause! Great inspiration on many levels; thank you 👍

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  Před 2 lety +33

      Thank you! I bought a dimmable driver but the electrician didn't have a dimmable wall switch when he came to install. I definitely plan to upgrade to smart dimmable switches in the future. As for the temperature, I also love the warm 3k look in a timber loft, BUT it is awful for filming. (a unique situation only applicable to a CZcamsr.). Video lights are all 5.5k and the difference looks super weird (if you watch the final shots of the butcher block, you can see the funky coloring that results when you mix the 3k and 5.5k). I went for a compromise with 4k....still slightly warm, but not so different from video lighting that it makes it difficult to film/color grade. :)

    • @hbuss12
      @hbuss12 Před 2 lety +4

      @@modustrial if the filming lights cant change colour temp, grab some full CTO colour gel which transforms daylight to tungsten, around what you need. Then just set white balance to that so they all match. Small sheets of colour gels are quite cheap and will fit in over the light.

    • @lh824
      @lh824 Před 2 lety +7

      @@modustrial Excellent point; I had not considered your need for higher illumination! I totally agree, 4000k optimizes the best rendering for your application. Any higher than 4000k you start venturing into the blue spectrum which, I fear, will result in an equally weird appearance. Glad to hear that you'll be dimming. Just in case you're not aware, most lighting manufacturers provide a list of tested, approved/comparable dimmers. If this information is not available on their website, I highly recommend you make a call - selecting a comparable dimmer just might help avoid an issue called "flicker" which will be very evident in filming (so far, not evident on CZcams 👍). Best to you and your endeavors - a whole lot of fun!

    A stronger connection would be to tap it and also use a nut as a back up, since it is very thin, the connection will not be as strong without the added nut.. I have done a very similar project and that is what I did.. Mine was basically a track light going all around the ceiling of our master bathroom as a main light source, I Made mine with a slightly different material, but I used an led light strip that came with a diffuser, It has been hanging in there for about 5 years so far, when used for light it is white, but at night I have it very much dimmed and it is in fade setting where it slowly changes color.. It has enough light to see what your doing, but not bright enough to mess with your eye's (night use) Cause at night at full strength kinda hurts your eye's.. I also used threaded lamp rods to run the wires and plain threaded rod for the rest of them and placed them every 4 feet (apart) Loved the video.. Thank you for sharing, I have enjoyed watching you turn that mess into a very lovely home.. You have a very bright future awaiting you.. Be Blessed.. Also glad to see you have almost completely recovered your health..

    Although the threaded tubing probably provides enough security to prevent it from sagging/falling over time, I'd still suggest adding a low-cost strain relief system for the edges/corners of the fixture. Something like extremely thin but durable fishing line or wire on all four corners would definitely help relieve the stress/strain on the "center" and the threaded tubes as well.

    Bro I still can't believe that my journey watching you build what I consider to also be my dream build started with an Ibanez Jem. Mind blown. Amazing light too 👌🏽👌🏽

    Thanks I love working with steel and now that I know I can braze aluminum I have another trick up my sleeve for my DIY fabrication!

    Thanks for the idea with those LED strips, I was unaware they existed. Just bought a usb-powered 2m / 6,5ft version to stick on the backside of my desk for some backglow. Works like a charm!

    That looks so good! Also there are so many different new kinds of LED lights out there now. I get a lot of inspiration for projects just by looking at them.

    That looks beautiful! I was wondering about the strength of the the alloy brazing for some heavier projects, but you really convinced me it's sturdy enough for most of the ideas I had. Flux can really help for cleaner joints. Thanks a lot!

    Hi Mod Man. First, glad you are doing better, you look great, and may I say happy. Second, your light looks waaaaay better than the one you showed, knocked it out the park!👌🏾
