- This is an overview of the process of breaking down and rebuilding the 46RE transmission. We go through the whole rebuild process. This project takes a little bit more time to work through, but it is nothing that the Ordinary Car Guy with a little bit of experience can't take on. Thanks for the support!

Theres a super good indepth tear down of the 46RE by the Transmisson Bench. His videos are amazing.
For those inexperienced mechanics here is a tip, when a spring is pushed from both ends it is COMPRESSED, when a spring is pulled form both ends it is under TENSION, the narrator does not know this. Plus they omitted an important step when they mated up the over drive section to the main case, there are a couple of bolt holes which go thru the main case and if you don't put RTV around the threads it will leak
Can't leave anything out when rebuilding a tranny
I've rebuilt those Chrysler overdrives since the inception and I've always injoyed having them on my workbench 👍 Edwards brothers TRANSMISSION since 1977 😀
Thanks for the in dept info. I've never work on a transmission with my bare hand before in my life not even changing the fluid, since 3 days ago now i'm full rebuilding a 42RE all on my own with only google and youtube.
How's it coming?
BOLShOi BOOzE I did it!!!!
Your so lucky you can share this with Dad!
2:36 Oooh! I know what that is! That is part of the adjustment for the front band. Your locking screw on the outside of the trans pushes that puck into the front band so when the cylinder pushes into a lever the band tightens up. 🎉🎉🎉
Appreciate the time you took to make this video and you were very helpful with giving me an understanding of how this works and functions. Thank you guys very much
I really appreciate the video. I feel confident that I can do this rebuild now. Thanks guys!
Thank You . . . awesome detailed show & tell video. All the best & stay well !!!
Wow...great video gentlemen! Extremely useful and easy to follow.
Going to rebuild my ‘97 Ram 1500 trans w/5.9L engine. This really does help. Save me $2000 if I can do it on my own for my 46RE. Thank you!
how did the rebuild go for you??
I would also like to know. It’s quite possible I will have to rebuild my 98 46re.
How did it go for y’all ? I’m thinking of trying the same .. got quoted $2800
I like the new GoPro video. Quality looks good and the light really helps! Good Job!
Great video guys. I have two RC from 1992 and both need the transmission to be rebuilt. thanks for the video.
Very well explained. I nailed the rebuild because of your CZcams help. Ty
Thank you, this is a wealth of information!
Quality on the Video is Great! Thanks for the help!!!
Very good video, thanks for sharing.
Go pro is definitely the way pulling a 4wd 46re from the junk yard next weekend for my grandpas truck
Thanxs for all the info much needed I did buy my kit threw transmission bench alot knowledge u can soak up threw jimmy and hes a lot of help
Probably a good idea to soak friction plates before installing them
yeah i thought you were suppose to soak the frictions before installing them
Yep !!
Great video
Nice job
Thank you for this video, even big name youtubers don't give the 46RE enough love when they come across them. The major reason for failure with this transmission is poor maintenance... if the bands aren't adjusted on schedule they'll never survive, what happened here with the anchor falling out is what happens if you don't adjust the bands over the life of the transmission, its gets too loose and falls apart usually getting stuck in the parking rod and usually preventing the truck from shifting into park. If you catch it in time before the drum gets scored you can get a slip in band from PATC and replace the band while the transmission is still in the truck, its just a #*%@& to crank the band down to torqe spec with it still on the vehicle. Usually this problem happens to people who buy these used because the previous owner who bought the vehicle might have done oil changes and kept it up nice but never had the bands adjusted because they wanted to avoid the dealer or something.
Very important on these older dodge vehicles that's often forgot:
Band adjustment
Grease the front end
ABS owners - Getting the ABS pump bled by the dealer (due to DRB3) a normal bleed will not fully bleed the system on these older Chrysler ABS systems and can be dangerous so I thought id add that.
What is the time/mileage intervals to adjust the bands?. Do you use the same torque specs as you would for a rebuild
I think there's specific times in the manual that I don't remember but its every other oil change I think. its always adjusted to the same spec. @@---RON----
Today include inspection of the planetary gears and an upgrade on all of them is a plus
When I was removing my oil pump to do the seal, the front set of clutches fell out of place. Is there any way I can get those back in without pulling the whole transmission? I'm about ready to sell this thing
What about the piston seals for the clutch packs?
Hey i found a 3 tab output shaft washer (is what they call it) in my pan where does that go? I cant find anywhere on it.
2 of the the transmission mounting bolts, will fit (in the holes. you used to pull the pump),
simply: slowly screw them in (alternating) will pull the pump with no tools except: a socket , ratchet and two of the transmission mounting bolts .
Lol yep I'm rebuilding this now and my dads friend who's helping me pointed that out and we did that insead of building a tool unnecessarily.(work smarter not harder)
Can you tell me what the name of the bushing is that is located at the end of the output shaft?
How many qts of transmission fluid does the a5 18 takes i have a 93 that's with tork converter too
After completing mu rebuild i notice that my output tail shaft does not spin freely it seems like its locked in place. In the ransmission bench video it spins freely. Any advice? Looks like im going to take the tail housing off and see why its not rotating.
Yeah, it's not as easy as one hope's.
.. I've been rebuilding my transmission and have had defective parts to deal with, clearance specs that were out on brand new parts and all sorts of stuff to deal with. I'd love to know if this transmission worked as it should first time in and out of the truck?
How much did the rebuild kit cost I have a 2001 Dodge ram 5.9 two-wheel drive
How did you remove the shaft out of the over drive before you depressed the spring?
@1:0145. Did you inspect the pump off camera?
Great video! Did this transmission come from a 4WD drive vehicle? My transmission is from a 2001 Ram 1500 5.2L 4WD Truck which I think has a 42RE. Looks the same though. Is there a difference?
Do you have to take all the guts out of the front before removing the tail section?
Now is their a special way to get the second set of clutch plates off of the main shift
94 ram 2500 2wd od switch
is it worth rebuilding your self or just getting a factory rebuild they want to much for a beater truck. like 2k
Picks up a band anchor and goes, "Whatever this thing is." Not getting a good feeling about this already. lol
Pulls out the planetary gears, "Now this is yer spider gears." Freakin awesome.
Or how about picks up the boost valve spring retainer, and goes this piece fell out whatever it is?
You missed the part where you show us how to measure the base adjustment for the line pressure adjustment bolt. I currently have low line pressure in my new 44RE there isn't a specific video that shows how to adjust.
Thanks for the video :) Is there a rebuild kit/company yall prefer or use?
We've used the rebuild kit from Oregon Performance Transmission
I clean case and everything else before reassembly.
Don't understand how at the beginning of the video the master mechanic mentioned he had done this several times, like 100 or so. Well, how did he forget so many steps on re assembly. The shift linkage TWICE ? Just curious, but overall a pretty nice presentation. Thanks !!
I've always heard transmission work is a different animal. I can honestly say I feel comfortable rebuilding my 46re after watching this. Great video guy's! Where did you get the rebuild kit though??
That’s great to hear! It is a different animal, but definitely doable if you are patient. We got the rebuild from OregonPerformanceTransmission.com. On their site they have the base kit and you can select what parts you want to add to it i.e. steel plates, bands, etc.
@@OrdinaryCarGuys I see an A500 42re, 44re, 40rh and 42rh A500SE. Would those parts interchange with the 46RE W/ vss?
They have a 46re, A518, 46rh rebuild kit. www.oregonperformancetransmission.com/product/OPT-A518-RB.html
@@OrdinaryCarGuys Man the parts guys cant even find this with my vin, and you found it like nothing haha! Thank you! I wonder of they have a stage 3 megaviper kit 🤔
@@OrdinaryCarGuys any store at Kenner Louisiana or new Orleans that sale master kit for transmission???
Mr. Mike I have a 1998 Durango 5.2L 4WD, 200K miles. How much should I expect to pay to have my transmission rebuilt? Thank you, Ronnie.
2:45 : The Torx bit for the 2 Filter bolts is a size #25.
You can just use a screwdriver to pry the pump out at drum lugs
Guys, can you please tell me what that part is that you found in the oil pan, kinda had the shape of an arrowhead and where it goes (2:10-2:14 and 2:32). I found the same part in my pan when it started having problems shifting from 1st to 2nd.
The "whatever that is" part.
I still want to see the transmission installed, working, shifting up and down, overdrive and whatnot? I rebuilt a 46re multiple times and still fucked it up. No channels show it built and fully functioning?
This is the video series I used.
czcams.com/play/PLEQmGOZDx8snXbL2wsCpflHLIr003wFd1.html&si=5pSJbciAGypFpL32
What year transmission is this? I have a 2000 and want to make sure its the same.
I have 2000 2500 gas it’s a 46re
I have to rebuild my dodge trans. How much total time did you put into the rebuild?
Close to 10 hours, but I would say 8 hours is reasonable as it takes quite a bit longer when trying to film everything and get it right.
i saw a guy from a transmission shop wire wheeling those big band wahers, they looked burnt and he was polishing them up to put back in,i guess thats a temp fix?
I would assume it is a temporary fix as that doesn’t replace any material that has been lost over its lifespan.
At 14:12 theres a bushing behind the snap ring. Anyone know what that part is called?
No what is it called
What is the oem tourque converter stall. I have a 5.2l v8
It seems to be around 1690. Below is the forum link that I found it on. I do not know exactly though.
www.ramforumz.com/threads/torque-converter.97697/#:~:text=You're%20better%20with%20a,engine%20delivers%20the%20most%20torque.
I cut off an old shift and made a line-up tool
Tell me what makes reverse go out on a 01 Dodge 1400 4x4 is it common and it what's the easy fix
For me it was the low reverse drum and band. Basically gotta tear everything apart to replace them.
Wanna do one that's still mostly functional? 😅
Only my 2nd is out can i do this without taking the over drive out
Did you end up getting it fixed? Did you rebuild it all, or just the front half?
My transmission is leaking from the rear seal. I changed the seal and its still flowing. I don't understand the seal I bought from the dealer i need help
I got the same problem did you figure it out?
Nop
Check for cracked case
Ok tanks john
What rebuild kit did you use
We used one from www.oregonperformancetransmission.com
@@OrdinaryCarGuys witch level of kit did you go with how much was it
@@dadhobbies9455 We used the master overhaul kit and added the steel plates. For what we were doing we did not need to add anything else, but you can add in the low-reverse band or any servos or other things that you would want to replace. Overall I think ours ended up at about $250
Could someone please help me? When servicing my transsmission, the Trans Pressure Sensor Transducer retaining clip broke. I can't find it anywhere I've been to many trans shops. Does anyone know where I can find a part like this
Try this: www.cascadetransmissionparts.com/regovernorsensorretainer96-99.aspx
When I saw an air ratchet with a 24 inch extension to remove pan bolts.................
What is the a518
The A518 also known as 46RH is an earlier version of the 46RE with the E designation of electronic.
Would you rebuild my transmission if i sent it to yall
If you would, send me an email at srhensley14@yahoo.com and let me know what it is coming out of and what is going on with it and we can discuss it further.
This is supposed to be a comprehensive tutorial video which in my opinion it is not. First of all you have to explain what every piece is and what it's function is as you disassemble transmission. Also did not explain the clearances on reassembly and how important they are, they also didn't explain the wear in the tail shaft case where the overdrive is.
No explanation now on the benefits of adding extra clutches and no demonstration or instruction to pre-soak clutches and bands on pre-assembly
Hey where u located ! I need a rebuild
South Carolina
Ordinary Car Guys where in South Carolina. I need my trans rebuilt It’s off a 01 Dodge Ram 1500. It’s alreAdy in prices cause I tried to take it apart but failed. It stopped working all together so idk what’s wrong with it
Okay first things you failed because one you did not lubricate the clutches second when you're replacing some of the parts you did not replace all the
stick with the go-pro. phone videos always suck
L3oo2
already ready to shit can this video
You're rebuilding a transmission and you don't know what a band anchor is?....this should be good...where's my popcorn?
Well I feel dumber after watching these two transmission overhaul hackers. I'm not going to finish watching these two.
