- The Bassmaster Elite Series is just about to start on Wheeler Lake and Trait Zaldain, Chris Zaldain's wife has accused rookie angler Trey McKinney of getting tournament information from his old fishing partner. Trait twitted about her feelings and says there is more to come, but shouldn't Trey be innocent until proven guilty? Is this jealousy from the Zaldain's? Is it slander against Trey McKinney? And can we get anymore fishing drama in the Bassmaster Elite Series of Bass Fishing Tournaments?

If Trey's former partner is fishing a competitive trail for points and said trail happens to be fishing at wheeler the week before bass, then the guy should fish and Trey should abide by the no communication rule in place and everyone live on in peace and harmony. Fish trail schedules often overlap on the same bodies of water and its just part of what we all deal with these days. Not that big of a coincidence that his once partner fished on Wheeler last week. I feel certain that J Lee, Justin Atkins, Kyle Welcher, Hammer Herren, Canterbury and several others have very current and hot info a phone call away but that doesn't mean they will take the info, putting their reputations in jeopardy.

She is way more than just Chris's wife..... She has grew up in the fishing industry, grew up in B.A.S.S. , do ya know her dad? Do ya know her career in fishing, in marketing? Hell, trait is more connected in the fishing industry than half of the anglers are. Good for her!
Shes an awesome angler, but that isn't what I was trying to get across. What her dad, her and Chris have done in the industry is awesome. But shouldn't BASS handle this? I think they should put Trey on a polygraph BEFORE the tournament and tell us the results. Cuz a rule is a rule. Respect your opinion. Cheers and tight lines!!

Anglers cannot publicly speak bad about BASS, but how about having your spouse do it on your podcast sitting 3 feet from you? That’s about the same as some one asking me for tournament advice on my local lake and me saying “well I can’t tell you since that’s against the rule. But I can tell this rock on the ground right next to you and if you happen to over hear it then it was an accident.”

I don’t think anybody is just being goody two shoes here and worried about not bending any rules as much as speaking out against something that literally has the potential of taking money out of other people’s pockets. To be fair though, I would do the same thing as the rookies if it wouldnt get me banned so I don’t blame them nor do I blame the Zaldains for speaking out.
@@Radican1 rules are rules. For an industry that complains about too much “gray area”, breaking ANY rules should result in a D/Q. Gotta enforce all of them. I agree though. I’d do the same thing the rookies did. “Everyone needs the same information”. Alright, then delete the 20 years of waypoints you have. You’ll never have an equal playing field. It’s just not possible. Someone is going to know more than someone at every event. It’s the unfortunate truth.

i met trey today at wheeler day 2 and he’s a great guy to everyone and it rlly seemed like all the anglers loved having him there 🤷🏻
With FFS now being so effective, all veteran experience doesn’t hold value anymore, who ever finds the best area with the biggest fish is winning every tournament now a days, this is why if he is getting info it’s a big deal, I’m ok with this call out

I'd think you would let him have to hit the water and make at least one cast before you could polygraph... I haven't read their rules in years but I believe it says everyone subject to polygraph during or after the tourney.

These rookies are amazing. Do they have the same experience as some vets, NEVER. But they are trying and using the technology to their advantage and the vets should too. The Birge thing is still mind boggling to me. Cheers and tight lines!!
Sorry but I bet some of the rookies would love some of the zaldains sponsorship money. Success isn’t just about tournament wins these days.
They are doing good bc their daddies are buying them a boat and 30k in electronics and backing them.. doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out how to use the new technology but if it wasn’t for that these kids would be nowhere close on the circuit, put him MLF with 2 9inch screens and see how well they do..
Bigbuckdown…. If the technology is so freaking easy and catching them with the FFS is so freaking easy…. Just explain to me why the older guys are failing at it? There is definitely a conversation about the new technology but this narrative of slap $30k of electronics on a boat and you just AUTOMATICALLY smash them is for people who don’t know fishing at all! Trust me if it was that simple all the Veterans wouldn’t be crying about the technology they would be smashing them as well. 100% the TRUTH whether people want to hear it or NOT! As fishing becomes more and more of a professional sport…. Ai hate to say it, but the older guys are just going to get weeded out. Legitimately I might add. How many 40 year olds can cut it in professional sports. I understand fishing is a little different with physicality, but don’t argue with me that a 40+ year old has the same hand eye coordination, the same energy levels, the same amplified focus, the same drive as these younger guys. Also as youth fishing has become bigger and badder these young guys are coming out more ready. It seems every weekend these kids are competing in 100 -300 boat fields all over the country. Stop with the narrative that these rookies can only catch fish because of FFS. It’s not true and shows a persons real fishing IQ when someone says that.
Not defending the Zaldain’s podcast here but you’ve labeled it as an overall negative for the sport but don’t know the name of the podcast.

If Trey's partner has fished every tournament in that series up to the one on Wheeler then by all means he should be able to fish this one, no questions asked. We are still in America last time I checked and he should be able to fish whatever he wants whenever he wants.
With that said Trey should be considered innocent until proven guilty just like in the court of law. I have meet the Zaldain's and even fished with Trait about 10 years ago or so. They were both nice to me.
Now that Trait is no longer fishing any BASS events she has taken it upon herself to bring a lot of these thing to light. Now before I go any further with my comment, I want the Zaldain's to think about something. Back in the day before Chris and Trait were married they roomed together while fishing some opens. So, are you going to tell me there were no info of any kind shared? Was it ok then because it was y’all? I can remember a conversation that me and Trait had and her telling me how she hated all the gossip going around about her getting help from Chris.
Now, that bring me to this next point. I know Trait like making all this public and it is ok because she doesn't fish BASS anymore. Do think Chris is innocent in this, no but that is just my opinion. I also think it give him a way to bring some of BASS’ dirt to the limelight without getting himself in trouble.
However, when you blasted someone online like she has done, all I can say is I hope she has receipts to prove what she is saying. If not Trait will have opened herself up for a potential lawsuit both civil and criminal if she doesn't have the receipts to backup what she is saying, because it is not just slander she has to worry about. There is defamation, disparagement, libel, defamatory libel and more.
Now, that is just against her. However if she goes on their podcast and post something about Trey that she cannot 100% prove and that podcast is in their LLC things get much bigger.
As I have said before, I hand it to Trait for talking about these thing that know one will. I just hope that she has done her homework. I don't believe there should any favoritism or cheating in the top level of bass fishing. I do not care who the angler is. If said angler was caught doing something wrong, a prompt, fair, public decision needs to be made. At a minimum on their web platform but should also be posted to CZcams as well in a short video from the organization and with angler explaining what happened to educate the rest of the anglers in the field to make sure they do not make the same mistake. Somehow the organization think hiding this info to have it leaked by other sources is a better look on them, has got to be the dumbest business plan ever. You make these thing public and embarrass a few anglers in a group of his peers and things will take care of itself.
In this day and age were thing are so damn expensive and the anglers are already in a pay to play sport that makes absolutely no financial sense whatsoever the last thing the angler needs is a organization that does stuff half-ass. Let’s think about it just a little, at every level the entry fees have gone up and the payouts have gone down. The funny thing to me is when you ask the organizations about that they always come back saying that the operating cost have gone up and that is was the payout is what it is. Well my question to the organizations is do they think we are still paying the same for boats, trucks, rod & reels, tackle, gas, hotels as we did ten years ago?
I believe everyone should make money but for God sake stop rising the entry fees and lowering the payouts every year.

I watched a couple of "The Bilge" podcast today. It's a good name for it. Chris is a great guy but Trait spends the whole show trying to dig up dirt or sway opinion to her point of view. Anything anti-BPT is her foray. Why else would they interview the ex polygraph guy from BPT. She comes across vindictive and bitter. She used to fish the Opens and a friend of mine drew her as a boater. His assessment of her was not good. Who does she think she is? Got proof? Share it, if not shut up!

In my humble opinion, if you have an issue or even a suspected issue with another angler it should be taken to the tournament director. Blasting it on social media does nothing good for the sport. This is a community, and that community is like family. You don't talk crap about your family to strangers.

If I watched this one and the other one on a consisent basis, I would know the name immediately. I have a few friends that fish the elites and I can tell you what she’s talking about is being discussed by many. She’s bringing it to the surface, she’s not making accusations but she’s pointing out issues. So what happens if this guy did find some waypoints during the tournament and he passes them on to Trey? If bassmaster is involved they are investigating and he should be penalized if he got info. I also don’t think Trey is this innocent kid everyone sees, I know Swindle shouldn’t have approached him in front of a media member but Trey shouldn’t have responded the way he did “well, good for you”. You do realize that most rookies do not get the criticism? It’s really just 2 that get more criticism than others. Hell I think the Zaldains have taken a liken to a few of them.
Btw, Wheeler is my second most fished lake and it will most likely be won from waypoints on shell beds, it absolutely sucks this year. The grass is gone (TVA killed it) and the fish will be schooled up and probably in the Decatur flats. Many of the elites fished there last year in the open but it’s fishing different this year. I think this tournament will suck. Just like the hat Jordan Lee wears which represents that lake “This Lake Sucks”.
Lastly, I don’t think they shit on MLF, it’s just they deserve the criticism. Slick Johnson constantly criticizes MLF, and it’s all warranted. Just look at what they did to Watson and most recently with Birge.
Respect your view. I think bass should handle it then discussed in public. Trey isn’t innocent but let’s not make him guilty before they look into, which they are not gonna find anything cuz bass doesn’t polygraph people and they don’t want the golden child to have his rep tarnished. They probably think it’s alright to run up on a spot where a local is already fishing and not say a word to them, and get rude and disrespectful when the local calls them on it!
BASS needs to up raise the cut from 9 to 20 each year. It’s obvious the new fisherman coming through the Opens and BASS Nation are a level above 80% of the current Elite field. I think what we are seeing with these little “distractions and mis-directions” from the “established” elite anglers is a symptom of bigger underlying issues. It’s a good old boys club and it’s getting exposed.

You got it right. Every one of the open anglers has a non- boater in the back who was fishing somewhere. Being an Elite pro requires some integrity and you need some proof before you print.

She did not say Trey was cheating. She is questioning his judgement. The purpose of their podcast is to get people to open up and say it like it is. Keeping it honest is the Zaldain’s “Trait” 😊

I like the pod too, but I think it's a lot of MLF bashing. I understand sharing the frustrations, and she did, but I also think we should give a little grace because he might not have talked to his buddy..... fingers crossed for him. Taint is only venting her frustrations not because of any thing rookies have said or done, or anything MLF has done or said. Her vitriol is a systemic problem ongoing, most likely caused because of performance issues on the water from Chris. Or perhaps she hasn’t seen or experienced the perceived successes other anglers and their families have. They use their podcast as a stage to bash MLF or specific anglers that have more notoriety. The bias is overwhelming. Same with that Luke Dunkin tool.

Chris was one of the original 80 anglers to get an invite to fish the BPT and he turned it down because he wanted to stay at BASS
It had absolutely nothing to do with him "not being able to afford it"
Chris and Trait were smart enough to see through the BS that being sold by MLF
Trait has deep and longtime connections to BASS and she is speaking out for several elite anglers, not just for Chris

Trey tried to fish the opens and couldn't make it when it was a far easier way into the elites. She is jealous her husband should be fined and censored for drawing drama to BASS . Since BASS already knows, then it's in their court to deal with. Dragging it to the court of non informed opinion should have conciquenses.

He's just telling the truth, I've watched most of them and trait does nothing but instigate negativity in the podcast which is bleeding into the entire fishing world.
Considering how he disrespected Swindle he seems like the typical spoiled rich kid type. I wouldn't put anything past him. This seems to be a pattern with younger guys in their first year dominating. Becker did it last year on MLF tour. They are great with FFS and along with the extra knowledge they got with that loophole really helped. We'll see how many stay on top after the first couple years. It’s not just Chris she is speaking for brother, there is a whole slew of veteran anglers that want these things out in the open but don’t want a target on their back. If she is wrong i guarantee he will apologize. It may seem a little unfair to the rookies but clearly BASS won’t address the whispers behind closed doors so the only way to get these controversies looked into is to go public. If nobody stands up and speaks about shady things then they only get shadier as time goes on. I don’t think it’s fair to accuse people of spewing negativity when they are just relaying information that has come to them.

The zaldains (sorry for misspelling) figured out a way to voice the opinions of the bass anglers or a group of them and speak their opinions that will get heard without anyone going against any sort of contracts. That part I love. They do have some great guest on the pod and one of my favorites is the guy that used to run the lie detector interviews. He basically got pushed out because he was to good and took his job very seriously
I’ve had others say that’s a great pod, I might try and watch it. They have every right to speak up but let’s do it after the person has done something wrong. They have the anglers well being in mind, because there is some shady things happening. Cheers!!
I disagree with you. I do not feel it is petty. She may not have the best of intentions but I believe the major tours have swept too much under the rug for years. I don't even watch MLF anymore and it has nothing to do with what Trait Zaldain has said. Boyd started it all when he let it be know he wanted to destroy BASS. Competition is a good thing and there is plenty of room for 2 major tours. But the way MLF has done things is a joke. And you even mentioned that many anglers have an issue with how this rookie crop went about things. I take it that Trait is just saying what no one else can. If it was all just petty jealousy why has she not done it in the past?

There is an easy solution, open it up to any information that the angler can get. Everyone knows they are getting info from any and all publicly available posts. So just take the rule out and make it where you can get information where ever you want or can.

First BASS has held Trey accountable and did penalize him when he actually broke a rule.
Second: BASS isn't going penalize anyone for not breaking rules and just hurting people's feelings because they are getting beat.

Trey has brought most all of the negative publicity upon himself. Let's see what comes out of this first, someone will have egg on their face in the end. Then they will have to explain their actions.

First not one veteran on tour is hating on Trey . He’s opened up the door for people to talk by playing in the grey area . Remember integrity is what you do when no one’s looking . Nothing against the kid myself but some things I’ve heard other pros say about him off camera and out of sight is worrisome . The whole Bass fishing profession needs an overhaul. When both leagues (BASS & MLF) let the sponsors dictate the business end, make calls to the tounament directors and make rule changes that benefit current market trends they're getting fat off of (i.e. FFS) while professionals are struggling to pay entry fees and have to find the perdiem to pay for traveling, lodging, and food expenses and by the way they are not on salary, trying to maintain their gear and keep up-to-date with new tech trends, etc., etc, etc., yeah I would say this profession really needs to be rebooted. When you have to spend $125k to $150k for a boat to include electronics and then entry fees, and as I stated before lodging, fuel, food and other expenses, you got to ask yourself why?

Didn't Becker get caught up in that mlf (#FBD) deal on one of the great lakes last year? Where they were using ffs and repeatedly catching the same fish. I'm pretty sure that Luke Dunkin covered it on his Low Budget Live podcast.
Didn’t Poche forfeited an MLF event because he fished the same body of water like two weeks ago for another trail? This is the right way to go. There has been role models already showing these young angler how to deal with similar situations, why not follow? Agree Trait might have sound negative, but she is not just crying for Chris. Doesn’t matter if Trey got info purposely from his partner or not, it is unfair to everyone else in the Elite. And, if the same young angler becomes the focus of multiple recent events, I don’t think it is the jealousy from the old boys club, I look at the young angler himself. Don’t forget, when Jordan Lee won two Classics back to back, nothing dramatic was around him like this. Lear how to be a good person before craving that trophy too much. After all, it is fishing.

It is very difficult to enforce the no information rule. I've seen some things that really make a person question things. Like I saw 2 different guys run to an area on a 180,000 acre lake, turn at the same stump and start to fish at the same jug on a trotline. I find it hard to believe it was a coincidence. To add a little to that, the year before; another guy stopped within 100 yards of that spot too. It ain't a community hole.

Bass fishing tournaments starting to sound like the WNBA with all the hatred against some rookies
A couple of things here that Im seeing. One, the tournament has not even started so technically he hasn't cheated yet. Even if he received information, at this point no fish were weighed or anything so no cheating has occurred. Second, why in the world would she go on social media and post this crap before the tournament even starts? If you have proof that an angler is getting information, turn that proof over to the organization and let the organization handle it. In order for him to be cheating he will actually have to fish in the tournament to be able to use the information that he acquired to be considered a rule violation or cheating. Trait should have waited to post this stuff. Let the organization have a chance to investigate the claims and do what it needs to do. She also says that there is other stuff going on at that tournament. Again why would she post something like that and the damn tournament hasn't even started. Look if someone is violating the rules then fine let the organizations handle it and once that happens wether it went the way the complainant wants it to go or not then they can go out make their post and have a field day. I think you're right on here, Trait seam like the Desperate house wife of the elites.
They also have a lot of hate for any pro that is at the top level.
You never see pros at the top of the AOY. on their podcast. Always harping on the Rookies and their skill level.
Also, have you seen her hatred for Wheeler, she bashes him every chance she gets. It was fun to watch Matt pangrac shut her down after saying he was fishing out of bonds and him telling her he call to check before fishing there. She did not look pleased.
Then when they had Watson on bashing his rods calling them junk.
Really it's just not done a pro industry.
As for going to Mlf, he said she would not let hom go over there.
But I believe she Kept him back hoping the drain in Bassmaster field would help Elevate his career. But has not really worked out for him.

Honestly with livescope pro fishing is lame. Learning curv is gone, experience means nothing. When guys are winning in the pros who couldn't catch a cold without it im out. They should have a league that doesn't use it and people would watch it alot more. If rather watch feider flip then watch a guy stare at a screen.

I feel for Trey though. 19 years old living his best life and dreams of being a pro angler and getting so much hate from jealousy. FFS or not we all know if he wasn't killing it and was middle of the pack no one would say a word. If it was GMan killing it every tournament using FFS everyone would be cheering him on. I know Trey has a great support team and strong faith in God that will help him prevail.

Sounds like a jealousy assumption to me. Had a lot of respect for Chris until they bashed every rookie on the circuit. Just mad they are getting destroyed. Now, I do agree if this is an assumption with potential evidence by many he should be put on a lie detector and get this taken care of. But pros slamming a 19 year old kid on social media chasing his dream. RIDICULOUS! I want to make the elites as much as anyone else, but these pros are making me feel like I would not be welcome if I did make it fair and square...
The reason MLF was formed and everyone jumped ship is because BASS had issues. The people that stayed thought they'd dominate with all the guys leaving. That didn't happen. Now both BASS and MLF have people braking rules unchecked and nothing is happening unless its on video. Management for both organizations should be changed before it is irreversible.

I think trait is making noise for the elite anglers (not just Chris) that can’t say these things publicly. Sure she’s obnoxious but she’s not under any contracts. Well my first opinion of this young angler is he is disrespectful, he is a sarcastic smart ass and when he got caught on plane running through a no-wake zone he thought it was no big deal blue off Gerald swindle and carried on like what he did was no big deal, that right there shows the character of that kid, which does not look good at all,.. so if he has a buddy that is fishing the opens I would about guarantee that he is telling him everything he needs to know.. not saying he isn't a good fisherman but he was seen breaking a rule and when he was confronted with it he didn't care and that speaks for itself.,. And what I think is funny this big uproar over forward facing sonar and the way they are fishing, we've been fishing like that for 15 years we call it tight lining, we mainly do it light fall all winter but we just didn't use sonar and we caught the s*** out of them, so in actuality what they're doing is nothing new they're just using forward facing sonar, wages been doing it without it, and honestly it ain't much different than damiki fishing in the South during winter time

Yeah I saw it. I was going to do a video last night, but I’ve been accused of bashing them, and in this video you can switch out Trey for any angler and I would have the same take. To compare Matt Becker with Trey is laughable, Matt is 32 and currently fishing his 7th year on the MLF tour. Where was Trey 7 years ago? Trey has been penalized twice in 5 tournaments for his actions on the elite series that is not a great track record for knowing and abiding by the rules so I think it is reasonable to question. Lastly you made to comment about the rookies bending the rules by fishing off limit lakes, I'm certain they have done more than that i.e. receiving waypoints, information from locals, having others scout for them. All that I have said is complete speculation but typically where there's smoke there's fire.
I can respect that. Could there be more? I guess so but shouldn’t we wait until bass looks into it before crushing the kid and making it public? Trait made this public, I gave my opinion and would have done the same thing for any angler from Trey to Chris. Cheers!!

Trey is a good kid and super humble. He doesn't care about winning enough to cheat. His parents are legendary barrel racers and good people also. Cannot believe people are bashing him because he's 19 and smoking all of you old-heads who stares at fish-finders screen all day.
Trey is my neighbor and has been my entire life. Not even a billion dollar prize pool will make him cheat, because he's all about testing himself and progressing as an angler.

She is talking about waypoints. You obviously didn’t listen to the polygraph expert they had on that the show. Bass hired him to administer polygraphs then basically said he wasn’t doing them correctly. He was an expert in criminal polygraph tests and taught other agencies to administer them across the US. Also you’d have be naive at best if you think they aren’t sharing information. You can’t get butthurt about them calling out the white elephant when there’s a white elephant in the room. You’re making a CZcams video stirring up propaganda for clicks. The problems exist because these organizations tested the waters letting pros use unlimited electronic technologies no other sport get to use.

And the organizations need to improve, but that rule is almost impossible to enforce, not to mention, the odds are against Trey being polygraphed. He was allowed to do what he did during the offseason, plain and simple. And they changed the rules recently, but if he wasn't fishing and doing so well would anyone have this conversation?
