CULLMAN, Ala. - Carbondale, Ill., rookie Trey McKinney self-reported after weigh-in that he received a phone call from a family member asking his whereabouts during competition and was alerted that he was late to check in for weigh-in, which violated rule C3 xiv of the Practice and Competition of the Official Rules of Competition. As a result, McKinney’s weight was disqualified for the day.
“Unfortunately, we made a mistake today that will cost us greatly in the long run,” McKinney said. “We don’t know why the Lord lets some things happen, but He has a plan, and the positivity - we get to fish to win for the rest of the year. Sometimes we don’t always know God’s plan for the future.”

If he hadn't got the call then he would have been over 15 min late and would have gotten DQd. That phone call was someone outside the tournament helping him. Good decision to DQ his day 2.
Don’t think it was a decision to DQ, I think it is a DQ rule.
I guess the clock on his live scope screen must have been off by 7 minutes. He uses live scope so much he may not know how to read an analog watch/clock. Oopsy Daisy!😂

i was really hyped about his early success. but as the season has gone on. his lack of attention to pre launch briefings and rules have really made him look kinda like a jackass.

You covered it. This is an example of a mistake an under twenty professional bass fisherman would make. Likely he will never make this mistake again. Having to be called by a family member to alert him about the time is similar to having to have your mom wake you up to get to work so you won't be late.
There is no excuse to be late all you got to do be on time.Rookie mistake
The guy self reported. Why is everyone hating on him. Seems he could have lied, made 10k and still be fishing. Takes alot courage to do the right thing.
Only took getting busted once to figure out how to self report. The issue is with him there's always a issue. Its almost like he is so young he hasnt matured into tournament fishing enough to be at this level, which without a screen showing him fish he wouldn't be there.
Word is that he only self reported the call after he slipped up and mentioned the call

The young man is a hell of an angler, but he needs to dig into that rule book and take some time to absorb it and not just look for gray areas like he did coming into the season.

Man how many times is ( hey this kid is young) to my knowledge there has never been a bass rookie make this many mistakes in one season and have this much controversy following him ! People say but it’s because of how successful he is , KVD is the goat and was burning it up and didn’t have all this . I myself hope that it stops because I am tired of it being a topic every week but I can’t stand to hear it’s because he is young ! This kid and his family has probably been following bassmaster all their lives so you must forgive me if I am hesitant to believe that nobody knew the rules !
I think he knew the rules are far as the min per pound part. I think he screwed up on the “I got a call saying I was late”! Who would admit to that unless it was to cover forsomething else, like you said “smoke and mirrors”! Lol

Maybe he is coming around, respect to him for self reporting. Not sure if he had a camera or not if he didn’t that even better if he did then you can’t help but speculate if he would have before based of prior events. Still gotta respect the kid for it regardless.

If you really wanna analyze it, on stage he said “something doesn’t feel right and so I checked the time” but when truth comes out it was a family member that called him. Not saying he hid it on purpose but sure looks that way.

He fishes in my pond all the time, since we are neighbors. Yet he has pulled several 8-10 pounders out of there meanwhile my PB IN MY OWN POND is 7.5 pounds. Trust me, he's skilled and doesn't RELY on live scope like most guys do.

Second, idk the whole rule, just want you said on the video. But if I was out fishing a tournament and a family member called me, them knowing I was fishing, the first thing that crosses my mind is “what’s wrong?” I am expecting and emergency.
Idk if his family knew they couldn’t call him, if he already knew he was late, etc but things like this need to be reviewed to make sure it wasn’t his intention to gain an advantage

I think even if his whole catch hadn't been disqualified, he still would've been in the 60s if I'm not mistaken with hamner and huff being top 10. Both of them were top 25 at both Champlain and st Lawrence last year. So even if he kept the 9-4 from Day 2, I still don't think he would be the favorite to win AOY. Hate to see it happen this way, but he'll have plenty more chances at it

Trey was top 25 when he got disqualified... plus he found a great spot for day 3 but was disqualified before he could go. he definitely would have been top 20 at-least.
Absolutely horrible. I feel sick for him. Kinda shocked at how much hate he’s getting considering his family’s mistake of calling him cost him his whole catch and he self reported. What a nightmare
Haven’t seen any “hate” from this incident. While yes his family called him, he’s the one who answered. Gotta know the rules.

So if you really wanted to fire up a conversation about honesty you could say , how do we know it was his family on the phone and that he didn’t get any info . His version sounds better and he is probably telling the truth but who knows !

Trey is a good kid. It was an honest mistake. Too many people jumping conclusions and judging him. HE'S 19 YEARS OLD! My niece and nephew went to the same high-school as him for christ sakes, plus he lives a few blocks away from me. We both mastered Crab Orchard lake at a VERY young age. Hope he recovers because this guy is REALLY good, with or without FFS, he will smoke most people twice his age.
Keep telling us how good a kid he is....seems entitled. Twice now he self reported but only after someone else was aware of infraction. 🤔
