      The company is making less money now than it was pre-Elon largely thanks to Elon turning the company into a spectacle. 7,100 employees seems reasonable when you consider the scale, although much like other tech companies that did layoffs it was likely bloated.

    he's saying he's turning off 80% of bloatware as if code is labeled "bloat" within the code base and comes with an on/off switch with no potential secondary impacts.
    addressing tech debt and spending resources on optimization isn't sexy as work items tend to focus on "make this thing happen" or "this is broke, unbreak it". a procedure sucking up resources and causing latency is often only addressed if it's happening to so many users and/or causes slowdown on such a noticeable scale that it's being reported as an issue.
    even if there's legitimately 80% of microservices that serve no or niche purposes can should be clipped, identifying and seamlessly removing them would be a huge undertaking. that he's describing the move as "part of today" is a joke in terms of both the amount of human effort and time needed.

    Besides the war, 20 seconds is far too much for loading a page.^^

    It's a disappointment for me. I have respect for Elon for the journey he went on, and I admire his work ethic. What he did here makes me re-evaluate my opinion about him. Why on earth did he not say something to the extend of "I talked to my engineers at Twitter. My current impression of the situation is that the response time for the timeline can be improved by reducing complexity by removing the variety of features that timeline uses". I think less of people in general who voice a strong opinion about something whilst having a faint understanding of it 😔

    • @CodyEngelCodes
      @CodyEngelCodes  Pƙed rokem +3

      Yeah same here. I think the reason why he didn't say exactly what you said is because he doesn't know how to manage effectively. Steve Jobs had plenty of great ideas but was a jerk to work for, and also I'm fairly sure most of the ideas weren't actually Steve's but who is going to contradict their boss?
      Elon was probably in the right place at the right time with the sale of PayPal to eBay and he was able to hire smart rocket scientists to make SpaceX a possibility while also stealing Tesla from the original founders and pawning it off as his own creation.

    • @merphul
      @merphul Pƙed rokem +3

      he's looking to impress users, and by extension advertisers, by portraying that he's in control of the situation and that he's going to make huge and immediate changes. making reasonable statements like you suggested that imply that he isn't 100% sure of what to fix and that the changes won't be revolutionary doesn't work for him.
      the tweets are performative. if he was truly as serious as he wants people to think he wouldn't be tweeting or responding to tweets several times a day, he'd be sequestered with the various teams and focusing on incremental improvements in the short term and larger initiatives for the long term.

  • @BinaryReader
    @BinaryReader Pƙed rokem

    Actually, Elon does sound like he knows what he is talking about. 1000 network operations per request is crazy, and even batched operations is orders of magnitudes too many. The issue probably relates more to how the data is modelled, which has likely led to 1000's of read operations needing to be issued by the caller. The fix would be to optimize the server all the way back to the persistence layer and ensure RPC read operations can be reduced to a reasonable number. There really isn't any excuse for this, even if factoring a decade worth of legacy. Reads need to be fast....

    • @CodyEngelCodes
      @CodyEngelCodes  Pƙed rokem +2

      You can make 1,000 requests in parallel really quickly. The main overhead is network latency but when the machines are in the same datacenter that overhead is fairly minimal.

    • @BinaryReader
      @BinaryReader Pƙed rokem

      @@CodyEngelCodes I cannot imagine a situation where making 1000 parallel requests of anything (batched or otherwise, DC or across the public internet) is going to be quick. I'm saying this with 20 years experience building networked backend systems.
      The reason I think this is because a batched RPC call is usually going to invoke a singular RPC call upstream (with the singular function run in parallel through some RPC batching infrastructure). Typically when batching, the intent is to reduce network overhead by send multiple calls in a single request, but the downstream RPC operation is still going to be written as a singular function that doesn't know if its being called in parallel or series....
      If the RPC method is reading some subset of data (either from a cache, or directly from the database), that doing to be a fresh operation each time its called. Running them in parallel (via batch) means you're running 1000+ fresh operations per request (where each RPC function is doing the same work independent of the other calls run in parallel)
      Again, It doesn't matter if this is run within a DC or across the public internet, the result is going to be slow performance, and there is really no excuse for batching operations in this way (batching is usually used to bulk write, not read)
      So, it's possible to avoid multiple parallel requests by having the server end have some forward knowledge of the kind of request being made from the client. If the client needs to make 1000 requests in parallel, that's a clear signal that the server needs to optimize the read capabilities so the client doesn't need to do that....(the client cannot be at fault if the server provides no facilities for efficient read)
      Optimization in this regard, involves the server being able to produce the same results of the batch for a single request by accepting either all (or some aggregate subset) of parameters of the batch, with a singular server function accepting all parameter. The server may then look to constructing a efficient DB (or other) query to read the data from some data store (where the repository may be able to optimize the query through clever query planning, as would be the case for any DB capable of indexing). If the DB cannot efficiently produce the results, then this is a sign you need a DB engineer to restructure or augment the data to allow the query to run efficiently.
      Note: In the case of Twitter, it's expected that they might run dozens of databases, so if you're looking to parallelize anything, it would be to parallelize DB queries, not the RPC calls.
      Honestly, i think in this case, the server probably had difficulty sourcing the data efficiently, which had resulted in the need for 1000 batched requests (as producing the query may not have been viable without significant data re-remodeling).
      With that said, this is speculation, but there is no excuse to ever run 1000 RPC batched 'read' operations.

    What Elon is doing is simply what any other CEO is doing daily. The only difference is that he's doing it openly. If you have a video editor that goes publicly after every video you make to trash you and say you're wrong then you wouldn't be happy either. Elon trashed the app and the technical issues it has, the guy trashed Elon. If I was a company owner I wouldn't want someone who trashes me publicly. It doesn't mean I want to repress them, I simply think as a company member you are also a team member and I wouldn't want a team member that criticises me or any other member publicly for spotting a technical issue.

    • @CodyEngelCodes
      @CodyEngelCodes  Pƙed rokem +4

      So I think that's the problem. Elon trashed the app publicly instead of talking to his engineers. I didn't have time to get into the complete spectacle it probably looks like at Twitter right now but one scenario is this:
      Elon brings in engineers from Tesla who have very little experience working with distributed systems used across the globe and went "why does Twitter run so slowly". They looked at it and went "wow GraphQL is batching up 1,000 of RPC requests just to generate the timeline". Elon then heard a larger number of things he doesn't have any context on and ran with that as the solution and made it public before telling his Twitter engineers privately.
      The engineers at Twitter are already fed up with his BS. If you're a good engineer it's not difficult to find a job, even in this environment, and so you engage with your boss in the same way he engaged with you, in a public setting on Twitter.

      @@CodyEngelCodes The quote that I assume you are basing your headline on is "company sources tell me that yesterday Twitter eliminated ~4,400 of its ~5,500 contract employees, with cuts expected to have significant impact to content moderation and the core infrastructure services that keep the site up and running. ". That is not "shutting down 80% of twitter", full stop. They are not turning off 80% of the servers. They are not closing 80% of their offices. They are not firing 80% of their employees (yet, hehe). Just man up and admit that it was clickbait and move on.

    I think you didn't get the point on what Elon is doing. He is resetting twitter to its basic form. I don't making decision with emotion can help you solve a problem. Being logical is what Elon's strenght and that is why many people misunderstood him.

    You are very irresponsible, all you do is make assumptions. "I assume that he doesn't know what he is doing ", " watch the video I made a couple of weeks ago of my assumption of what is like to work at twitter" even before Elon bought twitter all the software developers were complaining and threatening to quit and not do their work because Elon does not cater to sensor/cancel/etc culture, but hey since Cody Engel Assumes he is right we should all list to him.

It’s no problem for us to imagine that we understand why a person has taken a particular course of action. We don’t really know; we make a guess based on our imagination, past experiences or wishful thinking also lets not forget righteous belief of how things should be according to our singular standards and i say singular because they are yours not mine or the other guy that agrees with you in some parts.
