- For over 40 years, the Toronto International Film Festival has attracted some of the best filmmakers in the world to showcase the biggest films of the year. This year’s festival saw the release of Darren Aronofsky’s wildly controversial Mother! and the James Franco-directed The Disaster Artist. Past festival winners include La La Land, The Princess Bride, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. While there this year, The A.V. Club took the chance to ask some of the festival’s biggest filmmakers a question: What is your all-time favorite movie?

Imagine if in the middle of all these great movies someone just said their favorite was Minions
It would be out of the video haha.
Well it would be less pretentious
Think its angelina jolies favorite
Well.... some guy did say American Beauty. It's no Minions, but it's lame nevertheless.
@@dr.juerdotitsgo5119 American Beauty is a great movie
The woman who picked The Red Shoes and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg must be protected at all costs
she had my favorite picks
I'd save her too. But only because she chose The Assassination of Jesse James.
Protected against what? And for what?
@@BryanLomax totally agree. i watch the movie a lot of times and maybe its not my favourite but back then when i saw it i remember thinking why no media is saying how this is a masterpiece. allmost everything on that movie is incredibble
Bella Heathcote is a true cinephile. She appeared in Dark Shadows (2012) and The Killers 2013 music video, "A Shot At The Night".
After all the hype about Casablanca, I finally watched it. Meh.
Then, after i forgot all the hype, I watched it a second time, and thought, "that's a good movie."
Then, years later, I watched it a third time, and realized that it's on of the top ten movies ever made. It is as perfect as a film can get.
I just watched Casablanca few months ago and loved it instantly at first watch and now it has became one of my favourite movie of all time. Also loved the songs like "As time goes by" and "Knock on wood". Now I can finally see why people love it. 10/10 movie.
I sort of had the same thing with Singin' in the Rain. I watched it, liked it, but didn't quite understand all the hype. Then I watched it again sometime later (flipping channels, maybe), and kind of thought "Yeah, I sort of get it now".
I have since seen it a couple more times and it just gets better each time for me. Such a paper thin script, nothing super serious, but just a nice, feelgood movie with some awesome song and dance numbers. I just love it. And I'm not even a musical person. :)
guess you can say this about your love for the film, "Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow. But soon, and for the rest of your life."
emma thompson and allison janney queens of taste
Allison yes, blade runner is way overrated though
One Truffaut nomination - respect to that man Alfonso.
Mad respect to the woman who picked All That Jazz. I think it’s a criminally overlooked and underrated masterpiece. I was so PISSED when Kramer vs Kramer won Best Picture that year (I’m still pissed)
Let it go. LOL. I agree though.
Apocalypse now should’ve won
I respect All that Jazz but nothing that I would care to watch again.
@@nationalcoasternews5798 Correct
Emma Thompson has good taste, Blade Runner is an absolute classic.
No
So has Clooney, Network is great too 😃
When she said 'Blade Runner', I screamed Yes! I knew we were soulmates, Emma! lol
Smart lady. Also able to do favourites in different genres. Impressive.
I also share the same favourite film as her. she is such a good actress i love her performances
I agree with George Clooney when he said "Network" was a great Movie and way ahead of its time.
Oh yes, I watch this movie every years, Lumet is a underrated director
One of my favorites… I find myself quoting “I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore!” quite often these days 😅
Mckenna Grace saying ET then getting to work with Henry Thomas in The Haunting of Hill House
The movies, I saw alone, when I first left home, 17yrs old, to go to College remain really meaningful to me: I was lonely and they woke me up and fired my imagination.
If you are looking for all the names, here they are:
Network, Young Frankenstein, Blade runner, All about it, American beauty, Lawrence of Arabia, Ghostbusters, E.T. , The Shinning, Casa Blanca, Endless documentary Shoah, Some like it hot, Raging Bull, Godfather 1, Back to the future nr 1 and 2, 400 blows, Taxi, All that jazz, The red shoes, the umbrellas of Cherbouurg, assassination of Jesse James, Stand by me, Pulp Fiction, Bridesmaids.
acho que eram os nomes dos tipos de filmes kkk
@@goncalojesus3497 eishhhhh
It’s “tootsie” not “taxi” and the name is just “Shoah” she is referring to the fact that it’s very long and it’s “ all about eve”
thank you :)
Pretty bad job of naming these films 🤣🤣
Almost no-one gives the same answer, anywhere you ask. It's incredible really.
Wow, a ton of iconic films mentioned. So glad Bridesmaids to be included.
the godfather part 1 is untouchable
what about the untouchables?
No movie is untouchable. What a dumb way to look at things.
mine is fight club
My favorites is Taxi Driver, 8 1/2 and Close-Up
Lets not be friends
Amen to the guy that said raging bull
HAHAAAHAHHAHAHA
It’s Mulholland drive
Django Unchained is my favourite movie of all time
lol
Great movie
Whatch more movies than
@@MinimalWave1982 erik fan
My main is Fight club but some honourable mentions are La Haine, Moonlight, Requiem for a Dream, Punch Drunk Love, Come and See, Mommy,
Excellent choices my friend
Punch Drunk Love is incredible!
Looking down at my writing desk I see my pink soap 'Fight Club' sticker. Looking left I see my expensive 'Requiem for a Dream' canvas painting. I have the soundtrack for Punch Drunk Love. Jaws (three men in a boat) has been my top choice for more than 30 years.
"Mommy"
I think Fight Club is getting overrated. It was made at perfect time and now only makes sense as the movie that practically wraps up 1990s.
My favorite of all time is "Paris Texas", followed by "Taxi Driver", "Pulp Fiction", "Rosemary's Baby" and "Back to the Future".
Nastassja Kinski is so beautiful it makes me cry.
Great list
@@therunn3197 thanks. Nowadays I have changed it to Paris Texas - Taxi Driver - Pulp Fiction - Boogie Nights - Guardians of the Galaxy
@@gabrielesimone1372 Taxi Driver and Pulp fiction are masterclasses of cinema. Still a great list
@@therunn3197 thanks, again. What's yours?
My comfort movies that I watch every year, Halloween 1978 and The Karate Kid 1984.
Movies that I think are pretty damn perfect, Apocalypse Now and One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest.
I'll throw in Jaws which is so well made and can still be an entertaining summer blockbuster.
I’ll bet Inception is Bill Cosby’s favorite
along with Contraception
Underrated Comment
Ho, ho, ho. Lock him back up!
my favorite movie of all time is The Thing(1982)
For a long time it was "Pulp Fiction", but then "Ratatouille" took that place over.
Honorable mentions would be: "The Dark Knight", "Se7en", "Matrix", "T2", "Back To The Future".
Super obvious one, but it'd have to be the Shawshank Redemption
The novella is also pretty good.
yes, I think actors and directors sometimes feel pressured to name an obscure and exotic film, it's a bit pretentious. But there's a good reason why Shawshank is at the very top of the IMDB: it's close to perfection, one of the greatest ever pieces of American dramatic art
My favorite movie of all time is between The master ( Paul Thomas Anderson ) or Holy motors ( Leos carax )
8 1/2 (1962) for me.
I have given 10 stars to 11 movies: "Willow", "Alien", "The silence of the lambs", " L.A. Confidential", "E.T.", "The name of the rose", "Into the wild", "Edward scissorhands", "The shawshank redemption", LOTR "The two towers" , and "Das Boot." However, even though they are of the same rank, I love "Willow" the most.
I have a small bone to pick with das boot and that’s the first set piece when they’re being bombed is a bit too climatic and when he wakes up after sleeping through it would be the end good movie nonetheless
The name of the rose. What a film!!
TWO FOR THE ROAD(1967) W/ Audrey Hepburn, Albert Finney, Elenor Bron and Willian Daniels
Dead Poets Society moved me incredibly but I wouldn't consider it my favorite. I would say something a bit more uplifting like Chicken Run
Star Wars (1977)
Any love out there for the oddball charms of After Hours, Ghost World, American Splendor or Where the Buffalo Roam?
The Shawshank Redemption...
In the heat of the Night Sidney Poitier and Rod steiger, The guns of navarone with Gregory Peck and Anthony Quinn,
My fav's Amadeus. Well, currently.
Love F. Murray Abraham in that movie!
Once upon a time in america, the good the bad and the ugly, once upon the time in the West, fistful of dollars
@Marco Gessi - Me, too! I have all of these in my top 50 favourite films of all time, plus ‘For a Few Dollars More’ and ‘A Fistful of Dynamite’. ‘Once Upon a Time in the West’ is my number-one favourite and ‘Once Upon a Time in America’ is the best film I’ve ever seen. I love Sergio Leone; he’s my favourite filmmaker :)
@@tonyf.3932 good choice
Once Upon a Time in the West is one of my favourites!!
Network changed my life. Sidney Lumet and Paddy are my niggas
My grandchildren, now this year 2023 15 and 12 years-old, enjoyed all the Tim Burton pictures when they wee younger and so I bought them all for fear they kept mine and couldn't watch them from time to time !
My favorite movie is inception
Good one
@Michael Murphy this is why people come up with phrases like OK boomer. Inception is a pretty good. movie, even if you didn't enjoy it. You instantly loose all credibility by calling it junk.
My top 2 favourite never mentioned Shawshank redemption and The Breakfast club
Letter from an Unknown Woman
I'm always alternately cheered & horrified by these kinds of choices...
All About Eve - Yay!
American Beauty?! - yecch gtfo
etc.
Big love for Network. ❤
Casablanca may not be in a class of its own, but whatever class its in, it doesn't take long to call the roll.
Either ‘Zulu’ or ‘Lawrence of Arabia’
Oh yes and on The Big Screen please.
Kinda obvious one, but for me it has to be Forrest Gump.
No movie has managed to duplicate Ghostbusters
Not even Ghostbusters itself
I love Gael Garcia, oh such an amazing being!
what is the name of the movie that ari graynor picked?
Gael Garcia Bernal picked every movie he saw as a kid LOL
My favourite movie is (IT)
Which were?
Finally someone said 'Stand By Me'
American Beauty ♥
Undoubtedly
Some doubts here.

Arsenic & Old lace
My favorite movies of all time are The Lion King and The Ten Commandments
Any pulp fiction fans
Adam Furey Ok

hahh i was expecting this, my answer is always pulp fiction. ^^ :)
Michael Murphy pulp fiction is not my personal favorite but calling it garbage is so ignorant of you
Jackie Brown
I know.! All time network netflix are ever growing.
My favorite movie of all time will always be Top Gun
Good for you. Not a snob. It's a lot of fun. I'm dreading the remake.

2. Goodfellas (1990)
3. The Shining (1980)
4. Mauvais Sang (1986)
5. Dog Day Afternoon (1975)
Brad Pitt is a great actor and he was very good in that film, but it bored me to death. Mine is the Lord of the Rings, the trilogy; its beautiful, its in a league of its own.
I would say lord of the rings as well. I was obsessed and was Arwen two years in a row for Halloween 😂.

Tootsie starring Dustin Hoffman and Jessica Land came out in 1982
the last temptation of christ, Solaris (2002)
Harlan County USA
Kahdeksan surmanluotia (1972)
Lord of the rings or Mad Max Fury Road or Seven Samurai
Mine is inglorious basterds… I just think you can’t write a better script and can’t make a more perfect movie… but I love a lot of movies, but if I had to pick one it would be this one
2:27 Some lucky tart? Oooh...
Goodfellas or Magnolia. Don’t make me choose.
Two of my favorites as well
My favourite film is probably Goodfellas

any drama made in u.s.a. you know how to make a good movie.
What a shame , nobody mentionned Scarface !
No one said police academy 3
Shame , no one mentioned 2001 a space Odyssey
I did not like that movie... might have to see it again to give it another chance. 🤔
YES, SHAME, AND SHAME THERE ISN'T A SINGLE HITCHCOCK MOVIE
Big Chill, Anatomy of a Murder, Bohemian Rhapsody.
Lawrence of Arabia

Toss up between Flubber & Bicentennial Man
I love the fact that one of the men said Casablanca instead of hyper masculine movies like Raging bull, ghostbusters, laurence of arabia or the godfather
What's wrong with it?.Is it wrong when someone says hyper feminist movies like "Ladybird"?.If it's wrong, then I am glad no one said those kind of movies.
Well casablanca is a masterpiece
@@hanahhuhahaha1105 exactly
Imagine the level of toxic femininity it takes to think of Ghostbusters as "hyper masculine". Yikes
