I agree with him that being able to play a lot of different characters at the same time takes a lot of talent as an actor. It's a pity Eddie Murphy only used that talent to play stupid movies mostly. I bet he would have been an awesome antagonist in a drama or suspense movie.

Look at the multiple personalities of split as an example. I think Eddie could have pulled off far more in his career but they always wanted him to do comedies.

He really got me to feel bad for him, not as a criminal, but as a person trying to be good when nobody believes he can be. The conversation he has with the little girl in the park near the end is truly heart-breaking.
I would also put up Ralph Fiennes in The Constant Gardener. Very, very subtle work, as always. The scene where the character learns his wife has died is one of the best pieces of acting I've ever seen. The guy is a master.

Woody Harrelson is just on spot! Ulrich Mühe was on that one not an actor. He simply was the character. Little to nothing did he have to do in terms of expression, more so when he did not even have a line to speak (because that is how the script was written, as the silent character he was) in some of the most brilliant beats of that film. A pretty static character if you ask me and got me inside the story and his thoughts more than any other has ever before (and afterwards as well).

Joaquin in "the Master" would be my winner. Some overlooked performances that are easy for me to recall? Adam Sandler in "Punch Drunk Love", Colin Farrell in "Tigerland", Samantha Morton in "Minority Report" (or The Messenger), Eddie Marsan in "Happy-Go-Lucky", Terrence Howards "Hustle and Flow", Steve buscemi in "Ghost World", Judy Dench "Notes on a Scandal", Jackie earl Haley "Little Children", Billy Bob Thornton in "Bad Santa" to be honest, a unique performance. Robin Williams in "One Hour Photo", or maybe "Insomnia" (performances bleed together in my mind). Brad Pitt in Assassination of Jesse James....
D.D Lewis in "There Will be Blood" would be my second favorite performance
Denzel Washington in "Training Day" being honorable mention.....not an art film, not a special movie at all....and he was really playing his first bad guy. Relative to what a movie should have been, and how an actor elevated the material? He might be the winner for me some days. Training Day was a generic premise, but he raised the whole thing by himself.
Other performances that pop in my head....Jack Nicholsen in "About Schmidt", Naomi Watts in "21 Grams", Christian Bale in "The Fighter"(if that fits the decade), Bill Murray in "Lost in Translation", Charlize Theron in "Monster", Marion Cotlliard in that Edith Piaf movie, Meryl Streep in "Doubt", Christoph Waltz in "Inglorious Basterds"( if it fits the decade.), Julianne Moore in "The Hours".
I overwhelmingly watch English language movies, obviously

I don't understand why actors don't pick performances that might actually have been the best. Plus, Daniel Day-Lewis probably would have done the same if he had been nominated for Best Supporting Actor instead Leading actor in "Gangs of New York."
