    Antifreeze in the fuel could keep the engine from freezing as fast, that’s what commercial jets use. Maybe a guided intake could stop the engine being starved of air by your body sitting in front of it. And maybe a kill switch would be a good idea, since I noticed when it flipped the first time, it nearly torched your legs.

      atleast military jets such as the (now retired) sr-71 used and some pretty sure etill use jet-A fuel which prqctically refined kerosene with some more stuff in it to keep it from freezing, the disadvantage atleaat for tge sr-71 which used a low melting point high boiling point fuel is that they needed to use TEA-TEB

    Making it longer makes it more stable but also increases the drag and reduces manoueverability. You have to find the sweet spot by testing it out. Your biggest issue is the steering concept: By using a single rotating ski in front of your vehicle you introduce stability issues that make it hard to steer and you get those diving issues. At higher speeds this thing will spontaneously self destruct. Either put 2 steering skis in front like a snowmobile or use (imho best option) differential braking by increasing the drag on one side. You can increase drag with aerodynamic control surfaces (excellent at higher speed) and some kind of snow spoiler that retracts onto the ground and plows snow for drag. Another option is to dynamically change your weight distribution. Also maybe consider sitting around the engine so that it is located below your stomach , blasting out between your spread out legs and pulling directly from the front through your spread out arms. A bit like sitting on top of a superbike with a jet intake. This ofc. requires a sufficient shielding if the engine explodes, but it may help with the icing issue since the engine is enclosed and will stay hotter. Be careful of over-heating though! Good luck with the next iteration, i enjoyed this one!

    • @georux6783
      @georux6783 Před rokem

      Definitely make it longer, much more stable, little wider and better steering, maybe 2 ski system. Lay down will make it more aerodynamic for sure... no need to straddle the engine, too dangerous. Adding shield way too heavy. Oh btw, making it longer will not increase drag. It might decrease of not too long, spreading the weight out which will dig into the snow less. Look at the coefficient to find the sweet spot.

    I'd make it longer and a bit wider, then put a second engine on it. being wider would reduce the issue of your body blocking the intake and make the engines more efficient. Widening would also let you put a second ski up front which would allow for more stability because that is where the majority of your body weight is being held. Lengthening it would then let you put longer skis on to spread the weight load over a longer distance (same reason skis float better on faceted snow than snowshoes) which will actually let you go faster as well. You might also want to look at a ski that is around 100-110mm at the waist on the main sled body to also give more float and control in variable snow. Speed is a huge barrier in this game. A 38 mile trip over a frozen lake might not seem like much but the variable snow (breakable crust, faceted, and sastrugi) can definitely slow you down. Those are lessons I've learned from climbing and skiing the high peaks of Colorado. All in all this looks like a fun project!

He also need hearing protection for being right near it for 20-30 min...someone else said antifreeze to keep the engine fuel from freezing... maybe wrist and elbow and knee guards in addition to keep him from dying by oversteering and hitting icy floor/heavily packed snow... And a kill switch on a remote attached to his GoPro cam handle mount so he can keep the engine from continuously burning through his pants if he doesn't implement wings to keep it from rolling onto him

    Next time maybe try to cover up and sort of insulate the engine so the heat from it working will keep itself warm maybe even evaporating any water that could keep it from running

    Here's a thought a converted ice racer, but instead of skates use skis with a minor edge down the centre length for better turning, and use two jets, the bigger rig will allow it and be able to carry the fuel for the run,side advantage your sitting not kneeling

    Next up, build a car-sized version with a proper interior and heating, and then proceed to try and cross a much, much bigger lake. Perhaps Nipigon, or Baikal if global geopolitics cools down a bit. Now *that* would be truly insane!
    Of course, first you gotta beat level 1, Lake of the Woods first!

      Zoffinger in Florida put one on a Kayak, and was very disappointed in the lack of performance. Hacksmith Industries put two turbines on a standard canoe, and while they did go faster than Zoffingers kayak, it was extremely hazardous boating, at best.
      At least the snow will absorb some of the sound pressure...not so lucky on the water.

      Yeah, I've definitely heard it called "The Angle" plenty of times before. People usually use the full name, but it's a common enough nickname to where I didn't think twice about it when he called it that. It could just be that it's more of a local nickname that isn't as common in the rest of the state though.

  • @area51ray
    @area51ray Před 2 lety

    Ditch the skis and use snowboards so you can go on soft snow much better, the weight distribution will accommodate more terrain issues. I used to have blow molded plastic snowboards that I used with a big wooden box attached for ice fishing equipment, and they worked awesome. Snow, ice, and slush were no issue!

  • @colin-manyeates-clan5221

    Ok, the solution is right in front of you. The black plastic thing you used to drag it is the solution. Find or make a long one and mount the jet onto a frame around it and for a steering fork (I'd consider even doing something like a rear steer like a boat since no sharp turns are needed. Less chance of dig in) Have your intake air preheated by a cowling around the hot jet and with the large surface area you can afford a larger tank which I would make as part of the bottom of the container flat with foam or insulation around it and a scoop for air intake. (basically air flows in the scoop is forced over the engine backwards and then into the intake and out the rear and you could use a fin to direct the flow for steering too?? but on the ice may be too squirrelly so have the rudder as backup. )
    By separating the cockpit with large flat tank from the engine your safety goes up and the padding and you keeping the fuel "warm" and the intake air preheated and the large surface area that will fly over the snow as easily as the ice, you solve all the problems including the refueling stops which I think is cheating anyway.
    Now let's get it done eh...

    Way to go, very cool and that took a lot of balls. You need to lengthen the sled. Lengthen the steering ski and consider adding a shock absorber to it too. It will be far more stable at speed. Lay down and you'll pick up another 5 mph. Well done
