your arm acting as a lever in a throw, may also be why it sticks, no spin throwing is a thing, i can do it fairly well too.

everyones lucky to have any dad to be fair... even kids with bad examples are learning experiences. this young man has the engineering world at his disposal and how great that hes learning things that'll take him to higher and higher levels. SO COOL!

i grew up without a dad and i normally never feel it, but when i see stuff like this i just hope the kid appreciates it cause it would have been really cool to have a relationship like that w my dad
he is very lucky.
if my dad wasn't abusive i would have got to do cool stuff with him.
but instead of all that good stuff that's important to kids he ended up in jail and then committed suicide 10 years ago. i didn't know anything good about him or that he was into engineering and programming until we had to sort through his stuff. I was learning programming and engineering at that time so it was surprising to find out but also made it a little more depressing.

Those cement/ice block-breaking karate demonstrations are impressive! I love it when guys you least expect turn out to be badasses. I mean, a knife-throwing machine. That's so cool! 👍
Its the mass.
To be honest if you find the center of gravity of the knife, you can quite quickly work out the distance that works for a knife to stick at 1:1 ratio of foreweight to rearweight.
Once you figure out that distance, you can take a step back and modulate your starting grip (which is mostly determined by thumb fore and mid fingers) FORWARD on the knife to slow the spin.
Starting grips modulated further back give it a quicker rotation and thus can be used at closer distances.
Then through practice you can find the ratio of shoulder length paces forward = x finger lengths backward (from center of gravity) ((faster spin))
or shoulder length paces backward = x finger lengths forward (from center of gravity) ((slower spin))
Once you get a feel for these ratios, you can generally calculate the pace quantity to your target, and the ideal grip to accomplish the required number of spins to stick it to your target (with a small variable of arm velocity to determine how deep youre trying to penetrate.. when throwing by the blade, you can accomplish a half spin stick or a spin and a half stick, depending on the distance to the target is, you can actually tweak your throws very accurately through these parameters.
I got very good at knife throwing with 9, 10, and 12 inch cold steel throwing knives.
I find its actually best to practice with at least 3 of each size, because you dont have to retrieve your knife and recount paces or even move from your original position. But even better, to use 2 or 3 different length knives as well. Smaller knives are much more tricky and sensitive to adjustment, making a great challenge for intermediate throwers.
I got to the point where i could teach a person, brand new to throwing, the correct ear-to-extended arm movement, and then mentally calculate how many fingerwidths back or forward from center of gravity they should take their starting grip with, and even a complete novice to throwing would stick at least one knife in under 3 tries.. its a lot of fun and a great way to blow of steam or have friendly competition.
It really made me smile to see your contraption and to be honest i havent thrown much in years since i experienced a rough bout of radial nerve palsy a few years back.. if I had your invention I could have coped alot better while my arm was down! It pains me just thinking about the emotions that were running rampant through my head during that dark and lonely quarter... thank you for your video, and the cherry on top is seeing you accomplish all this with your son! Congratulations on your awesome idea!!! I might just have to make a few throwing videos now!

My arm started working again after 4 months, and its in full working order now. I might post some throwing videos sometime, if I do Ill send you a link. I play guitar and drums so yeah it was pretty scary but I feel God was getting my attention. Made me alot more thankful of every throw I even try now! Thanks again for your video!

@@TangoTribeAustin if im honest i believe it is 100% spiritual like everything else, especially since learning deliverance ministry when I found out an ex of mine was possessed (literally). Those demons laughed at me and ran circles around me until I realized I had to command them in the name of Jesus! Then they started coming right out! We thought my house was "haunted" until one of the orbs became a full silhouette standing between me and her. I said it had to leave if it had ill intent, and felt the presence grow hostile in the room, and the spirit "run" right at me. I started provoking it using religion (cuz I figured it was demonic) speaking about the blood of Jesus defeating it, and suddenly a different voice came out of her and she began to mock-repeat what I was saying to scare me because it was getting annoyed and worried I might dig deeper.. didnt work though I realized she was possessed took her upstairs and starting trying to cast it out. The "blood of Jesus" angers them royally, and breaks most of their power if you know how to apply it, (I didnt) the NAME (character) of Jesus is what makes them tremble and obey. That was a year and 8 months after the palsy, and looking back I know what caused it, and am surprised I wouldnt put those final two pieces of the spiritual puzzle together before then. I prayed for the first time in a long time, crying and asking for forgiveness and healing like never before... that day I was fully healed. My wrist would extend from then on with no problems where before i could only barely keep it from dropping if I held it a certain way and strained my brain as much as possible. It was like my brain was shorted out, and it was... my point is stuff only exists in the physical because it existed first in the spirit, and the spirit realm is more vast and governed than our own.. the spirit is how we perceive and make sense of things, the soul is how our spirit interacts with our bodies, and our bodies are how our soul interacts with the physical. Things we do and see and believe in the physical can have a direct effect on our spirits, but Ill tell you one thing, the bible is the only weapon we have to fight off devils with power and authority using! They believe the word of God and tremble! Sabbath peace upon you and yours, in Jesus name.

I love that you're teaching your kid this stuff. My dad taught me AutoCAD among other things when I was about his age and it stuck with me my entire life. I credit that experience partially with why I am working at Microsoft today! Keep up the awesome work.

My dad and I made an ALL WOOD downhill go-kart once. It was controlled by a single cross-bar that attached to the front axel. I raced my sister's longboard in it and its still the coolest backwoods ass shit I have ever owned and one of my favorite moments with my dad.

Its been a while but my dad got me into knife/ hawk throwing. Throw like a normal baseballs every 3 steps for a full rotation and if needed you can do a 1.5 step and throw by the blade. My best was 6 in a row at 35 steps but that was when i was a kid like 15 years ago.

Me and my buddies made a circular saw blade launcher like 15 years ago We went more for power then anything else but we got it to the point where 6 in discs would almost disappear into a tree trunk With maybe an inch exposed I don't know what happened to it after he moved but if we could've designed a magazine for it to automatically feed discs the thing would've been quite the zombie apocalypse weapon

Awesome video - v-squared is the reason why a thrown knife will stick, it's not rotational (rotation doesn't actually exist) it's just velocity. our arms are slow when stabbing, but throwing we can combine motions of limbs more effective to get faster.

Call it what you want, if the blade doesn't spin, you can't align the point with the 'armor' to allow for penetration at this very low velocity.

May I add: a skin of truck-bed-liner has a different mechanical strength, though its not comparable, its different from printing plastic in tensile strength, so, conceivably you can print a unit with fine dimensions and coat that sub-structure in Line-X to fill in the girth; giving it 3-D structural bones and surface-tensile-brute-strength to survive, the muscle, you've designed so well.
It is 0445h on a work day and I’m still up, having tripped over your magnificent project after hours studying a transmission repair on a lawn tractor. It is pure inspiration! Not about any desire I have to make a throwing machine, but the persistence and broad thinking shown in pursuing your creative project inspires me to not give up on the projects I have taken on that are over my head. Thank you both! Bravo!

The amount of work that went into this is astonishing! Nice work guys! Glad your kid knows how to program at such a young age! If I knew how to do it so early, my life would be way different
A a fellow inventor and engineer, I feel your pain of breaking stuff mid project. I also feel your joy of watching your invention pay off. This project looked like you got your fair share of both of these. I do have a suggestion for you: Use FDM for your 3D printed parts, resin is much more brittle and some FDM materials would not have broken when the machine failed. Some strong FDM materials are Carbon Fiber Nylon and ABS. If you do get a FDM printer I suggest the Original Prusa i3 MK3S or the Bambu Lab X1 Carbon. Also linear rails could be a nice addition for guides on the thrower.
I would agree that some of the Nylon blends like 910 or PETG would have been perfect. Light, absolute Strength, plus a smidge of elasticity and ability to take some impact.

Gosh dangit, I wasn't planning on going to college. Not for a career reasons anyway, but this video alone changed all of that. It made me realize I need to learn a lot more than I realized if I want to be able to make things to the level of quality and complexity that I want. Pretty sure you just accidently reoriented the direction of my life. For that I am grateful.

I loved watching the machining of the knives. When the sad piano music started and the solenoid had issues letting go, this turned into a "will it release too late and throw backwards" nail biter. Watching this put a big smile on my face. In recent years I've found more and more creative ways to use my nerd knowledge for fun and dangerous hobbies.

Really cool stuff. My guess on why thrown knifes stick easier would be that the longer lever and resulting higher speed when throwing, which could lead to inertia keeping the force from being dissipated oder a larger area. Like the difference between a push and a punch of equivalent force. Looking forward to the followup.
Counting the failures as stepping stone lessons towards the goal is great. Well done to both of you. The fact that you're no longer relying on a steady quad-pod you can consistently land and compensate for anomalies and get good results.

This is Amazing!! I'd be interested to see your findings on the kinetic energy / knife penetration questions.
I grew up throwing knives rotational style. One day I was amazed to see that there were world champion knife throwers who throw "No Spin".
I had the same questions and thoughts you did regarding knife penetration into the targets, but in my case it was in relation to throwing style (spin vs no-spin). My initial thought was that rotational throwing had much more penetration into targets because of the rotation. My rational was that the rotation somehow added more kinetic energy when the point made contact. Thinking about that now is akin to pushing on your dashboard to try and make your car move faster. The reference energy in that case cannot be inside the car, it's on the wheels. Similarly, a flying and spinning knife's reference point is it's flight speed and mass, not necessarily how fast/slow it spins.
Anyway, after months of learning the No Spin style, it was interesting to learn that No Spin has just as much penetration power as rotational knife throwing. I'm no scientist, but the only thing I can think of is classical Newtonian Physics of action/reaction and motion.
Jabbing a knife into wood with your hand (stabbing motion) - measure arm travel and speed. Factor into that, that you don't want to swing as hard as you can because your hand can slip around the blade when contact is made - adding a nasty cut to, enough of a strike that you could break your hand. You tend to hold back some power because you instinctively know your physical limitations when hitting hard objects with your hands.
Compare that to a knife throw, where your arm travel is twice the distance, give or take, and with much more power by the time you release the blade. More power + faster release = a Lot of kinetic energy, and a lot of knife penetration into target.

Great comment. I'm a knife/kunai thrower myself, both spin and no-spin techniques.
Your answer to the final question of the video is correct.
When you try to manually stick a knife in a solid target, you will instinctively hold back to not injured yourself, and so the motion is far more contained than when you swing to grow from a distance. Even if you swing light. Is that simple.
If you try to match the speed and force of the "far trowing", when you manually stick the knife from close, by putting extra care in grip and trying not to put much force after the impact, you will obtain similar result as a normal trow.
That was a fun and satisfying watch. Someone's going to see this video and want to put this thing it in their game.

Loved the son and father bonding of the project. What a great way to get your son interested in engineering and programming.
I just watched to the end, and leaving the (mad, awesome, i fucking want one... ) machine aside, your point of a teaching moment with your kid is what stuck (heh...) with me.
I have memories of hitting my first bullseye with an arrow, at 11 years old. My godfather is one hell of an archer, and he spent most of one summer teaching me how to handle a bow. That moment at 8 and a half minutes? Thats exactly how i remember it. Heck... i vividly remember his face splitting grin the second time i hit the target dead on!
That was 26 years ago. And i remember everything about it. Your kid is going to remember that "Thunk!" For a long, long while.

This is amazing. You're doing a _real_ engineering project, and your son is making genuine independent contributions. I did OK for myself, but I wish someone could have included me in projects like this at his age! If he decides to pursue a career in it, he'll be so far ahead. Plus, it's a neat project with a hint of danger, so it's super engaging. I hope you get 100 million views!

I so enjoyed this video. Brilliant? I see a brilliant father and son team. Kid never take for granted that you were blessed with an awesome dad, so many of us weren't as lucky. I dare to imagine a world where the relationship you two share is the norm instead of the rarity that it is. You two keep it up.
