Thanks so much for this! I appreciate your time and I'll definitely work my feet positioning, it's not something that I've even thought about before.
please tell me what is level of this song?
I have been learning percussion for ten years, but I still haven’t played a four-stick solo. Do you think I'm suitable to play this song?
It's pretty hard hard. Like professionals would have trouble with parts of it :)
Hey man! Sorry if this is a really broad question to answer but I’d love some advice here. I’ve been in a percussion for a while now and I’m a very competent drummer and I’m decent at Timpani but I’ve only ever played mallets once or twice. I’m auditioning for my University’s music program next February and all percussionists need to play a 4 mallet solo (they recommended something around the same difficulty as Rain Dance) as well as a 2 mallet solo. (they recommended Ragtime Robin for that) I obviously have a decent amount of time to prepare but I’m not too sure where to start. I have decent chops from drumming but keyboards in general are pretty foreign to me. Do you have any advice on what exercises I should start with/how I should approach learning the instrument. (I’d like to do both solos on marimba) I’m very comfortable when it comes to reading sheet music and I have a good understanding of theory so this mostly just about how to build technique and get comfortable moving around the keyboard. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Hey man! I was pretty much in the same boat as you when I was in high school. Here's my biggest advice from what I learned from the process. 1) No judge cares how hard your piece is. (read that again a few dozen times) As a Judge, when you sit in an audition room and hear 100 people and 90% of them play stuff that's too hard for them and it's bland and unmusical, you thank the lord when someone comes in and actually plays with some musicality. It's super refreshing. So stick to something easy and DO NOT play Yellow After the Rain. Not only is it overplayed, but the double vertical section at the end is deceptively hard. I would go with something from Mark Ford's book "Technique Through Music". I like Montecristo, but there are others that are pretty awesome. 2) You need to practice the following every single day. 2-mallet Major Scales, 2-mallet arpeggios, 2-mallet sight reading (the Peters mallet books are good for this), and 4-mallet technique. If you're using Burton grip or traditional crossgrip, start with double vertical strokes. If you're using stevens grip, start with single strokes. Get these basic strokes down really well, then move on to others. 3) Feel free to send me a video and I"ll give you some feedback!
Marimbalogy Thanks so much! I just got a Xylo to get some practice on and I’ll be sure to send in a video closer to my audition! Also, do you have any more exercise book recommendations?
@@hunterrussell9263 Simply Four is a decent starter book. There are a couple books from Mitchel Peters called Fundamental Method for Mallets that have a lot of great sight reading and two mallet stuff. I'm also a huge fan of "Up Front" which technically is about front ensemble percussion in DCI, but has tons of great info and exercises.
Marimbalogy Thanks! I’ll look into them. Ill talk to you a little closer to my audition 👍🏻
Fear the beard 😂
And it’s gone ;)
