Hey Everyone! I love music education and percussion instruments! I started this channel back in 2009 to help young players who perhaps can't afford lessons. Since then it has evolved to online lessons, reviews, and more! If you want to submit a video to be featured on the show, send me a link to marimbalogy@gmail.com

Super video. Been struggling with stick iin centre of palm!
the marimba looks so fun to play lol by the way this is the best megalovania cover.
Hey! Any way you have a score for this? It would be perfect for one of my front ensembles.
Trémolo como funciona? En el segundo golpe se apaga la anterior?
x quale motivo suonate il vibrafono con la Stevens?????? tante persone lo fanno!!!!!! complimenti x il brano Maestro!!!!!!!
please tell me what is level of this song? I have been learning percussion for ten years, but I still haven’t played a four-stick solo. Do you think I'm suitable to play this song?
It's pretty hard hard. Like professionals would have trouble with parts of it :)
Ganaría el primer premio, sin embargo la partitura la respeta a medias
I just finished my DCI mallet playing career and I'm remembering how much I used watch your videos back in early high school. Thank you!
Thanks for the review. I saw this product somewhere and wanted more information. The lack of dampening is a huge disappointment - thanks for saving me the cash!
I keep coming back to this video, great content and resources!
Is your hall of the mountain king exercise in a minor? I was trying to go off piano sheet music that was in b minor
I've just bitten the bullet and purchased a Samsung Tab S9 Ultra, a foot pedal and Mobile Sheets... it looks like a really good app, but I do prefer the look of ForScore. Wish me luck! Talking of early days I'm hoping the forward facing wide angle lens means I don't need a huge room to film me teaching my students. Things have sure changed since then!
I am an Android user and would like to know if Mobile Sheets is a good substitute for ForScore, in respect replacing paper scores with a digital organiser.
Heyyyy I’m your student Trae and I love your videos
Thanks for the video! So, at which intervall do you start to move the mallet towards the middle finger? Do you use the two tecniques for the right hand as well as you talk about your left hand?
I'm not quite sure what you mean by moving towards the middle finger. The middle finger is always pressed against the end of the mallet shaft.
Thank you so much for your honest review 🙏🏽
This isn't a human, it's an alien with 3 brains. There, I let the cat out of the bag. Amazing!!!
I can relax to this…
thank you mate
Have you done a new review since the Firmware Update??
Is there any app that i can tap and then, its transcribe my Rythym figure? I am percussionist
Have you the time to do a retest of this instrument as of 2023,the video is now 4 years old and I assume the product has evolved a bit since then. It’s just this review is quite damming and it might be time to revisit it.
I returned mine because I was so unhappy with it. It's received a couple of software updates, but the mechanical issues persist, mainly the velocity problem. If you need consistent velocities, I would either get a Malletkat or wait for version 2 of the malletstation. If you just need to trigger basic samples, it's good.
When it comes to Marimba One. You are definitely getting a quality product 1000%. However, i think something that makes this brand the best is customer service and responsiveness from the company. I've never heard of anyone having a problem with their marimba that wasn't fixed or replaced shortly.
Truth!
You have a very engaging personality. Thank you for the video, although I'm not a percussionist, I could really relate to what you said in this and the other 2 videos on audition tips.
Thank you! Hopefully my story if of some help!
Does anyone know how to retune the Malletstation to 432Hz? In what program does it work? Thank you.
The malletstation isn't in a particular key, but the DAW or sampler that it's plugged into is. I would start there.
Okay. Thank you! But does anyone know of a paid program for the MacBook that can change the frequency of the input MIDI instrument from 440Hz to 432Hz?
PERFECT SOUND, Can someone give me the pdf/score of that peace?
The dude got 1st Keyboard at pasic, 1st Tenor at DCI, and won top percussion at DCI as well. Needless to say he had a good year :) As far as music, it's available for purchase at a number of places.
Thanks, very useful lesson! Can you recommend any chordal voicings/arpeggio books that expands beyond only playing two octave scales/arpeggios up/down making it more musical? And is there a way to gain hold of your exercises?
I know a lot of people use to read out of a church Hymnal!
Your keyboardist can do this with a free VST at this point... this is an over priced idiot box
I've seen this used to great effect with vibraphone players who want to trigger sounds with their mallets back and forth with their instrument. I think "idiotbox" is a silly and unnecessary insult. Some people will find use for this, some people would be better served with a midi keyboard.
how many of these stupid things do they sell at a whopping 1200 and up? its literally a bunch of samples, on a controller that doesnt do an EIGHTH of what a normal keyboard controller can do. they saw that a real marimba costs thousands, so they figure, "well we will just make OURS 1200 bucks then" well hello? KONTAKT should charge 1000 dollars for ALL Steinway VSTs, since a REAL piano if far far more. And lets not forget Drum VSTs.. thats a lot of drum kids.. So they should be about 12k since you get all those acoustic sets. THIS can fail with a power surge, or a spilled cup of coffee. ITS NOT a marimba. PRICE IT AS WHAT IT IS... a one trick pony controller..
I have notice that wth hitting my EM1 pads/bars wth no matter how mellow of a mallet, everytime I strike a key it makes such a thumping sound that drives me nuts, and it cannot be my Stand I do not believe as I have the very best poss. If anyone here has the same issue, can you tell me what you use to quiet the racket? If anyone here has a Malletkat, can you tell me if there is any differ?
If you put it on a hard surface like a table it will be less. If you have it on a piano stand, you're going to get a lot of resonance like a drum.
I should seen this a year ago not 4 days before my audition...

It would have been nice that the title of your video specified that all thiese apps (or at least ForScore) were for apple only...
I think some of them are android, but not all.
Could you please tell us the exact total weight of each? Thanks
Not sure, you can ask the manufacturer.

Hi I am from the Bahamas, and I am interested in buying one.
What do you think of hummingbird by Michael Charles smith as a marimba audition solo for college
Finally finished putting all the pieces of this one together (after getting the Permutations book a couple years back...at your suggestion, actually, if I remember right--pretty sure you recommend Mark Ford's Intermediate book to me, too!) and wanted to see someone playing it well. Not surprised that your performance came up :) Great playing! It's interesting, because mine is on my Mode 5, so I'm using M112s for 3&4 and IP 703s for 1&2 in order to get a warmer sound of the glass-ish bars. (which like... I really feel the weight of those 703s by the end of a run of this piece!) Definitely glad I found your recording, though, because I think I was doing 2 repetitions of one of the bits at the beginning vs 3. You also accent the part before going back to the D.S. a lot better than I've been doing and bring the piece out a lot better, so it's really been instructive! :D
Do you have a video on playing sixlets triplet 16ths or stuff like that on time? Im doing xylo for a marching band show and a lot of what I’m playing is 16ths which I’m okay with but I also have to play sixlets a bunch too and I’m nervous about messing those up
Sorry for the late reply, been on vacation. The same principals apply! You can also make practice files in Musescore and practice at different speeds along size the playback from Musescore!
I’m preparing for vocal college auditions and this has been such a big help!!
Well done, dude. Off topic question, por favor: re: marimbas and xylophones in desert climes (Palm Springs, CA specifically) - will some sort of oil or wax help with possible cracking, loss of tonality?
I'm not sure if that would mess with the tuning or resonance. Perhaps you can post to some of the facebook percussion groups. I know some of the marimba manufactures are on there and they may be able to answer. You could also try emailing them .
Nice Marimba playing on Over the Rainbow! Wish Forscore ran on Windows! Watching yourself play on video is so helpful as a tool for improving. Whereas we used to just be able to record ourselves and listen back. Now we can see the physical relationship between movements and sound produced. Pretty cool, including your idea to slow it down.
Poor Title XX. I'm a musician. I don't want any of these apps. New Title: "Apps for Geeky Band Directors"
I don't think I've ever encountered a musician that doesn't have need of a metronome, a tuner, a time management tool, or a music viewer! You must have perfect pitch, perfect timing, and a photographic memory! I wish we could all be so talented.
Apple is so crazy expensive. I'll stick with Android. I'm not going to spend a gazillion dollars just to use and app. It's crazy to me that most musicians never have money but apparently they all have expensive Apple gear :P
