    The Maple Leaf OT goal that started the Islander Dynasty. The Toronto Maple Leafs finished 35 points behind the Isles. They didn’t even deserve to be in the playoffs and they literally goonned there way, beating the isles in 7. It was the wake up call the islanders needed and the NHL would hate for the next 6 years.
    The Islander would never be intimately AGAIN.
    The following year John Davidson would stand on his head to knock the islanders out of, early exit of the playoffs,
    And then the Dynasty would start. The islanders would go on a 19 SERIES win and walk away with 4 Stanley cups, losing only to the Wayne Gretzky young Oilers in there 20 series. Now you have another true Hockey Story.

    Does anyone have a private VHS copy of the '78 Game 7 broadcast between the Leafs vs. Islanders ? If so, please upload to CZcams. There is nothing available on CZcams.

    The absolute worst move ever by the Toronto Maple Leafs was trading Lanny McDonald. Hands down! Thanks Punch! Thanks Ballard for hiring Punch. Idiots.

      @MacTeee Před 3 lety +2

      Agreed, with final nail being Sittler's departure in early '82...I could cheer for them no longer. They were a team on the verge and Ballard/Punch destroyed it. Now I know how Keon fans felt!

      Sittler wanted more money and since he had a no trade clause, Harold Ballard wanted to get back at him and told Punch to trade his best friend Lanny. 2 years later Sittler walks out and ironically his friend on THAT team Laurie Boschman is traded because Ballard claims he was "too soft". Boschman goes on to score 27 goals in 1986 for the Winnipeg Jets. Think the 86 Leags who lost to the Blues in 7 games could have used Laurie then?

    I like Lanny McDonald. But outhit? Outmuscle? They just beat the Islanders up and the Islanders didn't respond. Lesson learned. The teams met again in the first round of the playoffs in 1981 - after the Islanders won their first Cup by going through the Boston and Philly wars. Result? Isles swept the Leafs 3-0. By scores of 9-2, 5-1, 6-1. So they outscored them 20-4 in the three games. Payback delivered. If it had been a fight, they would have been on the phone to the hospital.
