    I love the practicality of having 1 bag for all my needs, that goes with everything, but you do have to be thoughtful with deciding what bag will work.

    I have had only one purse since the 1980's--yes, my purse has lasted over 40 years. It's a dark aubergine synthetic leather with multiple spaces inside that has worked for me since I was in my 30's. I decided long ago that it was too much trouble to transfer everything I needed to put into a purse every time I went out. I think I bought it at K-Mart, so it wasn't expensive, but the quality was quite extraordinary, and everyone thought it was leather. I have always worked at home so my purse has not been subjected to a lot of wear and tear. The handles are a bit cracked after all the years of use, but every time I have looked at purses trying to replace my old friend, I can't find one that has everything this one has, so I hang onto it. I am now home bound and only leave my house for medical appointments, so there is really no point in buying a new purse at this point.

    I have only had one cork purse for years. I absolutely love cork as a leather alternative material. It looks and feels lovely and cork trees, in Portugal for example, are important protected trees that can be harvested sustainably and are important parts of the local ecology.

    I love the commitment to just one bag! I personally have 5 or 6 bags, all secondhand/vintage real leather in different colors but with similar styles. Bags are one of my favorite things to collect so I am currently allowing myself more than 1-2. The bags are of quirky shapes and to me they are timeless and I always get compliments on them--they really catch the eye! In the past I had fewer bags but had to replace them much more often because they wore out, didn't function as I needed them, or because they weren't by style. I have different colored bags because yhe colors match certain shoes/outfits and not others and I personally enjoy playing with color in my accessories. Having more bags and shoes I find helps me to keep myself from buying more clothes than I need because I can easily switch out shoes/bag and have an entirely new look. I do understand however that 5-6 bags is a lot for just one person and I think as I get older I may gift the bags to friends or family who many want them, and I will have a smaller collection one day. This is very inspiring to me to see one's commitment to a piece for almost a decade and I can't wait to see your experience with this new piece!

    I have three purses. My lifestyle is casual (work from home and mom of seven year old), but active, so my day to day is a thrifted black leather fanny pack from the '80s. When I need more space or want to feel put together, I toss the fanny pack into a brown leather Rudsak tote I bought on Poshmark, and the fanny serves as my wallet. Lastly, I have a black leather envelope bag from Portland leather. It has a removable strap, so can function as a dressier purse, clutch, or wallet within my Rudsak bag. It's great for dressier occasions and for work travel. This trio is working for me, and I can't imagine meeting my needs with only one purse (however I could get it down to 2 if I replaced the fanny with something a bit dressier and borrowed for any super fancy occasions).

    Love the idea of swapping out the strap! Working with local leather workers they can make up straps from discards (paid, obviously) which can work great if you're working with an old leather purse.

I never really understood people having multiple purses, but that's because I am not a purse person. Yours is very pretty. I’m not down to one bag and I suspect I’ll use two as I like to have a small one for short outings that can hold a phone and poo bags and a larger bag for longer outings. I spent ages trying to find the perfect ones that fit all the requirements I had, I wanted something that could fit my tablet in it, could be worn as a cross body and a backpack, needed a top handle, couldn’t be too heavy and had to have an easy to use closure, I was so happy when I finally found something that worked, it’s not as neutral a colour as I would have liked but it’s still beautiful and that was one point I was willing to compromise on.

    Love it. But, I enjoy faishon a lot and I enjoy to build very choesive looks, I like to wear a purse with bits of orange that matches my pants, for example. And I feel like this option makes the looks work but doesn't allow for creativity¿ or a lot of thought in fashion that's something that I do enjoy¿
    Maybe your goal is to have really easy wardrobe and mine is to invest a lot of time in it because it brings me a lot of pleasure, idk.

    I never intend for a purse to be a 365'er, but i only switch out my purses seasonally at this point, whether or not they match every single outfit is irrelevant lol. The fact that I have thrifted the same exact Kohl's bag 3x is probably a sign to invest (in my mind, $50 is an investment lol) in a great quality secondhand leather version and be done with it. I have a tactile obsession lol and am currently distracted by a not-perfect-for-my-lifestyle mini duffel in the softest, butteryest leather ever. I got it well worn for $3 a decade ago and it's just starting to go into its decline. After this one goes, we're getting practical. Goodwill has gotten a lot more skilled at spotting high quality leather, good for the kids who rely on the thrift store $ for services, bad for greedy thrifters lol ...

    I always use a backpack purse. For a while I was buying cute secondhand Vara Bradley purses but they wore out quickly because they are quilted fabric. So I got a beige canvas one. It is not as fun but it is useful. I like your tip of thinking about my predominant shoe color to figure out what purse color will work best. I am thinking that grey would be a good choice for me.

    This video really resonated with me. I pretty much have only one bag as well. I also have a backpack for when I need to be casual (e.g. hiking), and a smaller cross-body bag for when I don't have to bring a lot of things with me. I used to have dozens of bags omg...it feels good to only have a few.
    And re: vegan leather...I feel like last time many people are stuck in checked out vegan leather products was like 1999? Nowadays there are so many amazing vegan leathers, and they're all quite durable.

    • @grreeeeee
      @grreeeeee Před 5 měsíci

      I think there are very few good vegan leathers out there. Most are made of PVC, which is a terrible material. Only now are we seeing mushroom/apple leather, and they haven't been around for 10 years yet to be able to tell how they do longevity-wise.

    I have one black purse which I use whenever I need one. I think it fits my needs when I don't need a water bottle. I use it whenever I don't need to carry a lot of things. But it fits my wallet, phone, sunglasses and some tissues and mints.
    I also have one black backpack which I need for work as a teacher but which I also use for other things like daytrips etc. I really like its style but when I bought it I thought I could add additional holes to the straps which were too long. I did that but unfortunately there wasn't enough material left to put holes into so the straps are still too long which means my backpack isn't that comfortable, especially if it's full of heavy books or almost empty. I asked for the bag as a present from my parents as a student with the intend to use it until my retirement. Unfortunately, the inner lining in the front pocket has holes in it after five years of hard use which doesn't bother me too much but together with the too long straps, I'm not sure that I'll use it for maybe 40 more years. Besides my backpack and my purse I also use some tote bags for grocery shopping etc. (I have one big one made of a jean cloth which is very sturdy and which I use for almost everything: going to the swimming pool, shopping and even some short overnight trips) and a basket which I can attach to my bike (my main means of transportation).

    I only have one purse and in the summer months I recently invested in a fanny pack secondhand for those times I want to be more hands free and lighter. My purse has been with me since 2015 and the inside is starting to show some wear. I personally find it a waste of time, money and effort to switch bags so one to rule them all!

    I've been trying to find a great bag for months. That drive got stronger after a trip I recently took, finding a backpack that I love that works great for everyday but also great for travel is a tall order. For a handbag, I don't carry much so I don't need something big. My phone, hand sanitizer, and a few cards and cash. I just don't love the look of the tiny crossbodies 😅

    does it affect your view of their sustainability that the apple leather is mixed with polyester and then coated with PU?

    • @MyGreenCloset
      @MyGreenCloset  Před 18 dny

      No because unfortunately almost every vegan leather option incorporates synthetics and PU (but some are better than others). However with purses/bags I think the best thing I can do sustainability-wise is choose a style and high-quality product that will last years. While you can weigh the pros and cons of each material, ultimately buying 1 purse instead of 5 is going to be more sustainable overall, so longevity is my top priority.

      @@MyGreenCloset Doesn't it make more sense to buy a secondhand leather instead of something with PU/polyester? Those inevitably break down within 10 years. Genuinely curious

    • @MyGreenCloset
      @MyGreenCloset  Před 17 dny +1

      For sure if you can find a good bag secondhand that's great! Leather isn't always good quality though, a lot of it is PU coated as well so you're not always avoiding plastic by choosing leather vs vegan leather, and you have to find one that was well taken care of. I also had very specific requirements for the bag's style and space. I always try to shop secondhand first but didn't find anything that was the style, size, colour, and quality I was looking for.

    It's a beautiful bag but I have to ask you if you've thought about the fact that "Vegan Leather"=Plastic? You are carrying a plastic bag! How will you recycle this petroleum-based product when it is torn, or worn beyond repair? Sustainability can be bags from fibers, A.K.A. recycled paper leathers, textiles, or yes, vintage leather items that are already made and have stood the test of time. An old Coach bag for example might be 25 years old at the time that is is purchased for a second life, totally repairable, can be rejuvenated, will look great forever, and will not put plastics into our water supplies and oceans or outgassing into the air we breathe. I would love to hear your rebuttal to my comments. Thanks.

    • @MyGreenCloset
      @MyGreenCloset  Před 7 měsíci +3

      I have thought extensively about it, I've been talking about topics like this online for close to 10 years now. Everyone has different priorities when it comes to making sustainable and ethical choices and there is never a perfect solution so you have to do what feels right for you.
      I opt for high-quality vegan leather products because I am against purchasing new leather for both ethical and environmental reasons. Most leather products, including vintage items, are not actually biodegradable - many have plastic coatings or are treated with chemicals that don't safely break down into the environment so the idea that they are 'natural' and don't shed micro plastics or offgas isn't correct. I'd also recommend doing some research on chrome tanning, it's highly toxic. Leather quality is also all over the place and many products are not actually easily repairable.
      There are less than a handful of leather brands I actually like - who are more transparent with their sourcing and only do vegetable tanning (you can see them here in the leather section: mygreencloset.com/sustainable-bags-purses/) but even then weighing the pros and cons for me the vegan option still is on top.
