I bet skinny jeans part was Stan's idea
Actually, it was all me. I feel very strongly about the subject. :)
Oh, this is getting awkward, isn't it?..
@@CourtJones You are fooling yourself, clothes that fit, like those jeans that you used in the video, always look good. Any bigger than that, does simply not fit, and therefore, does not look good.
@@johnhunter743 women are the only variety of human who can pull off the skinny jean look. :D
@@CourtJones lol I’m using skinny jeans..... : (
Proko, 10/10 informational ressource. Kind of unlucky for non English speakers who want to become better at art . But I'm sure a lot of other languages have good teachers too
Great content as always. feels more interesting because you're exploring more abstract ideas.
Amazing content! I'll miss you Court! and thanks a lot for teaching us
Lol I thought you looked just fine in skinny jeans 👍
Those weren’t even skinny jeans! 😆
Looks good. What, men shouldn’t show any leg anatomy at all?
I guess the European and Asian standards are different. 🙂
Great tutorial, thanks for sharing
Really interesting video. Two things I noticed about "texture". One, texture seems to really amount to a pattern of small detailed shapes. And also, what was shown as a bad or messy style was actually because of the texture of the drawing. I think texture is a huge part of what makes the look or style of a picture.
no. the drawing classed as messy was pure chaos in every way. the strokes were everywhere, the shapes were wobbly, the values were spotty
Miss Payntbrush, yes the strokes being everywhere, the shapes being wobbly, and the values being spotty makes little messy spots and lines everywhere with no pattern or order, in other words really bad "texture". Isn't it?
I've just started thinking about this after watching this video and seeing the examples of texture they showed. Look at 1:08. See how those examples of texture are really organized and have a lot of pattern and order? Now, look at the bad design shown at 2:20. See how the texture of all the lines is really random with no pattern or order? Yes, I believe this topic of "Texture" is much more important than we realize.
Texture is what you see when you are very close to the subject. that's why it's not on top of the hierarchy. A messy shape/line is not texture, but a messy shape/line. I think that a good design should look good from far away, that's why how it's presented is the most important element (composition). Then we identify the contour (shapes and lines defining them), after that you get forms with values, then colors, then texture. you can disregard or even mess up colors and texture and end up with a great piece of art if the other elements are great.
Hi Mr. Jones! I really loved how you did the abstract shapes for the values on the face! Very Leyendecker-esque! I also particularly enjoyed the study you did using his art style a few videos back. Would you be doing more studies of his works in the future? He's currently my favourite artist (and many out there, i'm sure!) and I'd love to learn more about the way he paints, particularly the way he comes up with concepts and his use of colour in shadow. Thanks, and keep up the good work!
You my friend earned an immediate subscription for your reference to skinny jeans !
Wonderful video!!!!
Sorry man, you're rocking those jeans
Thank you!
Great vid
Proko, you look so different!!
Disagree! I think the instructor looked awesome in skinny jeans.
You look good in those pants
He looks better in regular pants. Leave the legging for women.
paintur68 I get the sense that people who dislike skinny jeans don't know much about clothing as a whole because of comments like these. Leggings grip the skin, are generally black, and have plastic based fabric. He was wearing denim, it did not grip his skin (they actually fit him quite well and by many standards would be considered more of a slim, not skinny fit) and he looked good in them! The pants are fine my dude
Hi Court!! Which is the brushe that are u using to shade?? is it similar to a charcoal stick?? thx for the course!!!

Stan, I watch your interview in Art Side of Life and you said that you'll be doing a Drawing Fundamentals course, will Court help you with that?
+Carlos Roo - Nope that’s my own course
Well I hope we see more of Court in the Future, even if is not in plans for now.
can I ask, What brushes in Photoshop do you use to achieve those traditional like pencils
What? You looked good in those pants, man. Much better than those baggy mom jeans that seems to be so common with americans.
Most Americans Are Fat
@@yptat2 Most Americans are not fat. We just have a super high obesity rate. But not everyone who is obese is "fat".
@@GamingOS Yes, that's literally what obese means, it's just medical terminology for having a fat percentage higher than 25% for men and higher than 35% for women. The tiny amount of bodybuilders who have a higher BMI because of their muscle mass but low body fat percentage are not part of the obesity epidemic. Most people in america are overweight and obese, they have too much fat. Stop trying to sugar-coat it, it's the reason you got fat in the first place.
I have a BMI of 19.2, im not fat. Just because I type like an SJW doesn't mean I look like one.
@@GamingOS Mr Smith is right, EVERYBODY who is obese, is also fat. You are Obese when you are above 25% body fat (though I am not sure if that is the exact number), the BMI does not matter for that definition

I have no idea what he means by "shapes that are pleasing to look at".
good point
Pena que não temos brasileiros capazes e competentes o suficiente para fazer algo à altura. Pena.
Those jeans fit well though😂😂
i'm actually fit, wore skinny jeans for a short while and hated them! You make good instructional videos as well. What is your name?!
Thanks, Anhjun! I'm Court Jones.
Why i can't rid of a thought that this one eye is better caricature then the whole painting...
7:33 is that Andy from Conan show ?
where is proko .
May I know where I can download the pencial brush and eraser u use? Thank you.
I mostly use Kyle Webster brushes, which now come bundled with Photoshop. One or two of the shading brushes was downloaded from the amazing digital artist Peleng/Sergey Kolesov.
7:46 how did you even rotate that brush? thanks
I thought I was the only one that squinted when looking for shadows and lights.
Does anyone know what program he's using when he did the more detailed eye?
It was either Photoshop or Corel Painter. I go back and forth a lot with those.
can i ask for somthing, i need help with my digital coloring , cz i dont know why, my colored drawing always look blury, maybe cz the brushes i use ? but its look blury, aaah god pls help
You may need to use a larger canvas. What's your canvas resolution? Usually we use around 3000 - 40000 pixel canvas width.
Does anybody know, what brushes is he using?
How pictures? Adobe Photoshop?
Those jeans looked pretty good. I don't know.
Such a good digital brush, is there any brushes like that in photoshop?
Yes, those are mostly all brushes that come with the newest version of Photoshop. I believe I used a couple Kyle Webster brushes. I used Kyle's Shady Graphite and Perfect Pencil and one was a custom brush from Peleng. One of his many with the title "Sampled Brush". I re-saved and renamed it so I'm not sure which.
Hello, does anyone know the name of the artist he mentions around 2:30? I’ve been trying to find these images on google so I can follow this artist, but I don’t know how to spell the name.
Jan Op De Beek Took me a minute to find it. Very prolific. Love the style!

i m sorry, i m french and for me, shapes and forms mean the same things … am i wrong ?
Shape is 2 dimensional while form is 3 dimensional at least that what I think it means
this guy has a thin upper lip but you made the lip thicker
why?
Are you talking about the John C. Reilly caricature? I don't think I made the upper lip thick at all. But I guess it's open to interpretation. And to answer your question, if I did draw the upper lip thicker than you think it should be drawn, then that would be simply the way I saw it in relation to all the other features. You might draw his caricature very differently and it could be a great likeness. That is the awesome thing about caricature. Check out caricature competitions like Caricaturama Showdown on Facebook to see dozens of different takes on the same subject every week by different artists.
The “no lines” caricature of JC Reilly was way better.
Where can I find Jan Aptopic?
It's Jan Opdebeeck. czcams.com/users/janopdebeeck or instagram.com/janopdebeeck/?hl=en
Charackature
What’s he talking about, he looks good in the jeans
Proko's aged
Cartoony is not the style shown. That style of rendering is called cel shaded and derives from the cels that animation used. Cartoony is the exaggeration of forms and doesn’t define a rendering style.
We all have our own lingo for art concepts based on our experiences and background. "Cartoony" definitely can have many interpretations and depends on the context, such as "cartoony color" - as in: colored as if it were an animated cartoon. But when you talk about the exaggeration of forms, the most apt word to describe that practice is "caricature." I'm a caricaturist, not a cartoonist. If a person approached me and asked me to do a "cartoon drawing" I would tell them they have the wrong guy. I don't work in animation or regularly draw cartoon characters, or render in a simplistic cel shaded style.
Court Jones -I disagree. Cartoony is the style of exaggeration we see in all of these pieces where caricature is the format. Cel shading is the rendering technique used in the 3rd caricature.
At art and animation studios, there are very well understood definitions for all of these techniques or processes.
@@wordragon I think this is a great opportunity to clear up some misconceptions about caricature that I encounter in my work. Historically speaking, "cartoon" simply meant a line drawing or sketch done as a preparatory stage in a work of art. Today, cartoons are either line art, flat color or a simple coloring/shading style (ala watercolor perhaps) and usually refer to invented characters that appear in printed comics or animated shows. Cartoon characters can run the spectrum from realistically proportioned humans to simplistic scribbles. But the determining factor making something a "cartoon" is if it is a simplistic or minimalist rendering. Whereas "caricature" is the term that refers to the act of exaggeration to achieve a humorous likeness of a real subject. Caricatures can be rendered in a cartoony/cel shaded manner, flat colors, line art, realistic or photo-realistic shading and coloring. In caricature, the style of rendering has no bearing on if it is considered a caricature.
Or to put it more simply: Cartoons = invented characters drawn and rendered in a simple style. Caricature = exaggerated likeness of a real person, regardless of style.
A cartoonist can certainly draw caricatures of real people for their political cartoons and likewise a caricaturist can render their drawings in a cartoony simplistic style. But the term "cartoon" is not interchangeable with "caricature" - at least not to the professionals who work in either of those fields.
I can be kind of wordy sometimes. If that seems unclear or if you have any more questions, please let me know.
Great clarification @@CourtJones
