    Really interesting video. Two things I noticed about "texture". One, texture seems to really amount to a pattern of small detailed shapes. And also, what was shown as a bad or messy style was actually because of the texture of the drawing. I think texture is a huge part of what makes the look or style of a picture.

    • @misspayntbrush3301
      @misspayntbrush3301 Před 6 lety +4

      no. the drawing classed as messy was pure chaos in every way. the strokes were everywhere, the shapes were wobbly, the values were spotty

    • @RobertF-
      @RobertF- Před 6 lety

      Miss Payntbrush, yes the strokes being everywhere, the shapes being wobbly, and the values being spotty makes little messy spots and lines everywhere with no pattern or order, in other words really bad "texture". Isn't it?
      I've just started thinking about this after watching this video and seeing the examples of texture they showed. Look at 1:08. See how those examples of texture are really organized and have a lot of pattern and order? Now, look at the bad design shown at 2:20. See how the texture of all the lines is really random with no pattern or order? Yes, I believe this topic of "Texture" is much more important than we realize.

    • @pardismack
      @pardismack Před 6 lety +5

      Texture is what you see when you are very close to the subject. that's why it's not on top of the hierarchy. A messy shape/line is not texture, but a messy shape/line. I think that a good design should look good from far away, that's why how it's presented is the most important element (composition). Then we identify the contour (shapes and lines defining them), after that you get forms with values, then colors, then texture. you can disregard or even mess up colors and texture and end up with a great piece of art if the other elements are great.

    Hi Mr. Jones! I really loved how you did the abstract shapes for the values on the face! Very Leyendecker-esque! I also particularly enjoyed the study you did using his art style a few videos back. Would you be doing more studies of his works in the future? He's currently my favourite artist (and many out there, i'm sure!) and I'd love to learn more about the way he paints, particularly the way he comes up with concepts and his use of colour in shadow. Thanks, and keep up the good work!

      Are you talking about the John C. Reilly caricature? I don't think I made the upper lip thick at all. But I guess it's open to interpretation. And to answer your question, if I did draw the upper lip thicker than you think it should be drawn, then that would be simply the way I saw it in relation to all the other features. You might draw his caricature very differently and it could be a great likeness. That is the awesome thing about caricature. Cartoony is not the style shown. That style of rendering is called cel shaded and derives from the cels that animation used. Cartoony is the exaggeration of forms and doesn’t define a rendering style.

    • @CourtJones
      @CourtJones Před 4 lety

      We all have our own lingo for art concepts based on our experiences and background. "Cartoony" definitely can have many interpretations and depends on the context, such as "cartoony color" - as in: colored as if it were an animated cartoon. But when you talk about the exaggeration of forms, the most apt word to describe that practice is "caricature." I'm a caricaturist, not a cartoonist. If a person approached me and asked me to do a "cartoon drawing" I would tell them they have the wrong guy. I don't work in animation or regularly draw cartoon characters, or render in a simplistic cel shaded style.

    • @wordragon
      @wordragon Před 4 lety

      Court Jones -I disagree. Cartoony is the style of exaggeration we see in all of these pieces where caricature is the format. Cel shading is the rendering technique used in the 3rd caricature.
      At art and animation studios, there are very well understood definitions for all of these techniques or processes.

    • @CourtJones
      @CourtJones Před 4 lety +1

      @@wordragon I think this is a great opportunity to clear up some misconceptions about caricature that I encounter in my work. Historically speaking, "cartoon" simply meant a line drawing or sketch done as a preparatory stage in a work of art. Today, cartoons are either line art, flat color or a simple coloring/shading style (ala watercolor perhaps) and usually refer to invented characters that appear in printed comics or animated shows. Cartoon characters can run the spectrum from realistically proportioned humans to simplistic scribbles. But the determining factor making something a "cartoon" is if it is a simplistic or minimalist rendering. Whereas "caricature" is the term that refers to the act of exaggeration to achieve a humorous likeness of a real subject. Caricatures can be rendered in a cartoony/cel shaded manner, flat colors, line art, realistic or photo-realistic shading and coloring. In caricature, the style of rendering has no bearing on if it is considered a caricature.
      Or to put it more simply: Cartoons = invented characters drawn and rendered in a simple style. Caricature = exaggerated likeness of a real person, regardless of style.
      A cartoonist can certainly draw caricatures of real people for their political cartoons and likewise a caricaturist can render their drawings in a cartoony simplistic style. But the term "cartoon" is not interchangeable with "caricature" - at least not to the professionals who work in either of those fields.
      I can be kind of wordy sometimes. If that seems unclear or if you have any more questions, please let me know.
