A bass line is a great place to start when writing music, but it's too easy to get stuck in a box and forget how versatile a simple boring bass line can be. In this lesson/demonstration we'll be experimenting with transforming a single bass line into 5 different genres of music by using different techniques.
Special thanks to Roger Reupert for playing the lick for me in this video!

It is so good to see Greg Brady after all these years 😄
anyone need consulting for their new music video?
My Brain has rated this Channel the "Most easy to digest" Music Theory outlet.
Agreed👍 Jake is an excellent teacher.
You bet. He's got a gift for illustrating everything he tells you. It shows that he knows what he's talking about, and he makes it plain to understand.
I've watched a bunch of his videos.. and what I'm experiencing is that (basic) music theory is not hard at all. It's the (rather ancient) nomenclature is very confusing to me.
Yes, I've been getting recommended videos for years with some pretentious jazz guy... And I just leave more confused. This on the other hand makes me actually want to hunker down and learn
@@rumble1925 make sure to return to pretentious jazz guy when you feel more accomplished tho!
The dance along tutorial in the top corners really helped me enjoy the EDM that much more
It's actually from the Tim and Eric Awesome Show skit Celery Man. Funny stuff. 👍😂
Paul Rudd is a national treasure.
2 Takeaways from this video. 1) I've got to stop giving up on lead/bass lines so easily. 2) I need the "My crotch is on fire" dance move from 4:34 in my arsenal right now.
It also helped me appreciate THIS CHANNEL even more: While yes, it's a theory/composer channel, because he mostly uses a guitar, I figured that was his only real knowledge base (and so took away, personally, it's easiest to write with a guitar, or at least with traditional instruments). But it helps show that theory/composer knowledge can be applied EVERYWHERE! I know it may seem obvious to some, but it just helps ground that fact even more!
So much fun! Hahaha what a dancer!
so how tf you look 20, sound 40, and have the musical knowledge of a 60 y/o???
No kids.
Doctor's and music teacher's hate him!!
He’s like The -Art-of-Guitar mixed with Adam Neely mixed with Rick Beato
It's called TALENT
"A lot of bass lines are pretty boring in isolation."
Things like this fuel my fire to be an even better bassist.
A good bassist knows when to just hang back and when to take the stage. There's a lot of technically advanced music out there where the bass gets as much air time as the lead guitar and it *usually* sounds awful. Not always though. Sometimes it's written just right, so everyone is supporting everyone, rather than everyone masturbating with their instrument as they see fit :P
But really, most of the absolutely nifty/funky/groovy/sexy bass licks out there were given the space needed to shine.
@@andersjjensen I would like to write and play stuff like Primus or March of the Cephalapods from Soften the Glare
@@salty_3k506 Funny that you mention Primus, as they're sometimes (not always) guilty of what I said above. You need to be acutely aware whether you're making music for "normal listeners" or if you're making music for "other musicians". There's nothing wrong with either. But if you do the latter, don't put up a surprised Pikachu face if the former tap out and say "Dude! Too much going on at the same time!".
@@andersjjensen i didn't say that they make music for casual listeners and i don't think that they should. Their music is unusual but the instruments still support each other and interact in really interesting ways.
Also, could you maybe show some songs where the bass sounds awful just because it gets more screentime? Because to me, those two things aren't connected. A song needs to be constructed around something like a lead bass but that's on the writing, not on the bass.
Dude... that last “space rock” seemed very much like Pink Floyd.
You rock, man!
Thats what i thought too,awesome tutorial,many thanks
Ya, the Space and metal were my favs!!
My thought exactly! It grabbed my attention the hardest out of all the styles shown.
Glad to see I wasn't the first the think that!
Ots because of his influences, space rock is not like pink floyd but even the blues part of this video sounds like classic rock lol
The EDM part made me think: "Damn, Jake, you were definitely a 90's kid!"
ikr?
“Hi, my name is Jake Lizzio and this is my Master Class.”
Jake Lizzio is worthy of this comment.
9:15 is that *the lick* i hear, or am i just going crazy?
Yep, that's T H E L I C C
_L E L I C K_
Yep, completely broke the song when I heard it
You're just going crazy
Well now that you mention it....
I'd really like to see a video on how important Timbre is to a composition, I feel like it's often very understated, but this video really made me think about it. All these people here chasing "what scale do I use for this sound" or "what chord progression do I use for this mood" are all barking up the wrong tree. Instrumentation, arrangement, production, and so on are just as important, if not more so, for these types of things. Seeing you do all those different genre arrangements really made me think about this.
Jeff Schneider has a fairly recent video talking about the importance of timbre. I firmly believe that execution is half that battle- a simple arpeggio can sound lame as hell when played on a midi piano but absolutely sacred when played on a harp by a real human!
@@SignalsMusicStudio Ill definitely have to check it out then! Thanks for the suggestion!
3:37 That dancing dude in the top left corner made my day
My band is gonna hate me from all the simple basslines I'll throw at 'em... and I'll enjoy every single second of it...
Thanks Jake for your work. U're showing the music theory like no one else. Its a pleasure to watch your videos and learn with You. Best regards from Poland.
Krzysztof Kaźmierczak Agreed. Jakes work is marvelous and I am extremely thankful for him producing such high quality content, it addresses all of the important questions with spot on visual representations. Thanks Jake!
I truly love your work has taught me things I didn't even know existed.
I couldn't agree more!
Awesome stuff here.A really inspirational young man.

Dude, that Em7 to Gmaj7 is heavenly.
Do you think you could do a video on dream pop/shoegazing styles?
This... please, THIS!
Yess please!!!
"Your bad ideas were actually good ideas that just needed to be seen in the right light."
Dude I tripped acid hard yesterday, so when the space rock came up and the screen started gettin slightly wobbly I had to blink my eyes and do a double take hahaha
I can't even tell you how long I've been waiting for this!
That edm track is fire! I also like the blues one, but my favorite is the funky track. :D
Just discovered your channel and LOVING it!! And I've ordered the modal poster!! Can't wait to receive it and see all of your videos!!! Fantastic stuff!! Thank you so much for sharing this knowledge!!
So good, Jake. Love your stuff so much. Perhaps the only channel that I watch every single new video that pops up on my feed.
Thank you Jake for shining your wonderful light. You always make magic happen in your videos.
The space rock part was amazing! Thank you !
Such a joy listening to all the information you gave us come together at the end of your videos!
You make it look so easy. I appreciate your work!
I love the way you explain things!
Keep up the good work!
I love all the music you make! I get SO INSPIRED!!!
I truly don’t know anyone else making videos like this. Very helpful thanks so much!
It's fufilling to see you grow as a guitar player with us. Keep up the good work man
Your videos are probably some of the most important and useful theory videos on CZcams. It’s so digestible and informative. Thanks so much.
The chords at 7:35 are pure magic😍
No... I was wrong. The space rock part is the best😭... So many ideas to start creating. I love this channel😍
Great "Applied Theory" theme … Pretty cool bass-line, too !
When composing a pop-rocky bass or drum line, I often use what I call "The 8 Year Old Bicycle Method" … Picture yourself, at the age of 8, riding your bike and using your "vox-synth" to (vocally) utter an improvised "spy-theme" or "action riff". … So, I am racing my bike down a hill and "singing" (uttering) a "radical" impromptu hook-line.
I discovered your channel recently... SO GLAD I DID! I love your teaching style, love the multi instrument approach, love the fact you use DAW examples, and teach music, theory and recording concepts ‘holistically’... it’s SO VALUABLE! Just wanted to thank you, and to let you know you are super appreciated! ❤️👍🏻
One of the best instructional videos I’ve seen in a long time. Great work 👍
This is one of the best videos you have put out, Fantastic!!!!!
Such a great teacher! Keep up the good work and keep hammering out quality stuff.
Awesome as always Jake!
Thanks for sharing!
God bless, Keith..
I loved this lesson especially the tip about simplifying the bass line at first so you have more options to work as you develop the song. I'm really glad I found this channel. The way you break concepts down and apply them is so interesting and easy to follow.
11:46 is when Pink Floyd starts playing in my head
Hello, is there anybody in there. Just nod of you can hear me. Is there anyone home?
Man, this is incredible! I'm a bass player who just now started composing and I have to write and play all the parts myself. I'm not that good with guitar, but I've been following your channel to get a better grasp on harmony theory and this really inspired me to take a second look at some bass lines I've dismissed some time ago! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
The EDM version sounds like something you would hear in a men’s hair loss commercial.
Sounds like menu music on an old ps1 racing game.
Amazing content as always! Thanks!
Just wanted to let you know that some random dude somewhere on the other side of the globe loves your videos, and wishes you all the best. Rock on!
Excellent! Thank you, Jake.
The music you create in these videos is always so good that I'm torn between being super inspired and just giving up on trying to create my own.
This is fantastic. I’m going to spend my weekend recreating this then begin coming up with my own. It’ll be a great use for my new looper pedal. Thank you!
great lesson Jake. Congratulations!
I am amazed and utterly stunned.
This is one of the best videos and explanations of how changing the voicings changes the song entirely! Great video, thank you for making it. It really helped open some doors. I can't wait to apply these ideas. I'm going to need to rewatch this a lot.
FANTASTIC! The making of music seems so much clearer to me now, and accessible too!
Dude, you're a class act! This is my go to channel for music theory. I can actually enjoy theory when you turn it into something practical.
You're awesome man. You're helping make this theory a lot more digestible
Another great video lesson Jake! Thx
Highly appreciate your effort Jake! Proud to be a subcriber
Always awesome! well worth the wait.
Videos like these are real eye openers in so many ways, especially if you're new to writing songs. Big thumbs up for doing them.
Great info, and BEAUTIFULLY done!
Love these "flavoring" of the same line or progression vids! Mind expanded!!
This channel rocks!!! I am learning so much!
Very inspiring - amazing how far you can go with a simple 3 note bass line. Love the last track and the blues with trumpet before that.
LOVE the way you work. The costumes & dances were hilarious. Thank you-made my day!
Yet another fantastic video!
You are a natural born teacher...and an excellent axe man as well. I am a big fan of your stellar work.
I've always been a player relying on feel, but I love the cerebral approach of this dude, really expanded my horizons.
Really inspiring! Two thumbs up!
Loved the video, brilliant advice. Thank you heaps!
You, sir, are so dang talented. I found your channel last winter, have a bit of theory under my belt already, play keys--not guitar--and *still* learn so much from every upload. Your musical ability is clearly evident, but also your skillful teaching methods. Thanks for doing this! Also, props to a fellow Reason user!
Jake, thank you & hats off. You are a great inspiration transforming music theory to practice seemingly as offhand as a sunday stroll in a park meanwhile explaining this process as clearly as a recipe for scrambled eggs. I also like the trademark style of your vids and THAT VOICE. Keep up the great work!
I love your lectures for your voice alone.
Of course the content is also brilliantly explained too and astonishingly easy to comprehend in its complexity.
You sir are a great teacher.
Holy crap man!! You are so freaking awesome!! Thank you for the push and inspiring to song write!
Amazing! Again, really liking these songwriting videos. Thanks for sharing!
Best dance tutorial EVER! I love your channel and have learned so much. Thank YOU!
WOW. Incredible explanations with cute and funny textures all throughout!!! Well-made!
I freaking dig these videos of yours.
Not just the way (to me) helplessly complicated, overwhelming music theory started entering my brain to a degree. The way you make it seem so effortless to create fleshed out composition practically as a byproduct of a teaching video is honestly a bit like magic to me.
After getting stuck on your videos until 4AM, blowing my mind, I find it sad the latest video on yt seems to be from over 1 year ago ._.
I just can't explain how to express my words I work as a guitar instructor and since I got your video the way of explanation and getting jam over the progression leads the intermediate and begineer to rush very well , the way you do I just say you nailed it
I wish there was a love button for this video. I greatly enjoyed seeing how you produced the tracks in your DAW as well as the theory and guitar discussion.
He is so talented it blows my mind every time
A great teacher and musician! Thanks for the video and love your channel!
You are one of the best channels!!
Very perceptive and instructive. Clear and well presented. thanks
Amazing. Great job!
You sold me on the tambourine, it really does sound awesome when you stop to think about it.
You have a very clear and concise mind for teaching. Thanks for sharing. 😷👍
Love your videos. They are always truly eye opening, or is that ear opening. Thanks man.
This channel is so educational. I’ve been following for over a year and most of what you said now made sense. (I have no prior music theory knowledge). I’m now enjoying the musicality of it rather than furiously googling every term. Thanks so much!
Wow ! someone recommended this channel on reddit for learning music theory and absolutely love it, what a great series, thank you !
Cheers once Jake. You really know you stuff and often when I am looking to learn concepts about guitar and songwriting you are one of my go toos. Keep up the epic work dude.
Hats off, Jake! Thanks!
Most excellent Lesson!
This video inspires so much creativity. Thanks!
This video was something I asked for/needed help on specifically. It really means a lot to me as a musician this got made.
Love the channel man, great work! 🤘
You are amazing. You explain in a very good way music theory, your video quality is top, the talking and explaining, theoric - practical - visual examples etc. not a second lost in all your content, all structured well and good. I wish you the best, thanks to you I have a more open mind and understanding of music. Thank you
The last few lines were truly encouraging!!! thanks!
Great lesson! Thank you!
Awesome, Jake. Awesome.
