I cannot thank you enough for your series on 4.0l engines. I was fighting the installation of a 4.0 in my son's Ranger. I watched this video yesterday, went home and had it mated to the transmission and bolted into the vehicle in less than 1 hour. Truly thankful and you deserve more than subscribers and comments. Again, thank you - this is the best video series on the SOHC engines, PERIOD.
You are the first person I have written a comment to on CZcams. I just want to thank you for your video. Having consolidated an engine installation in a half hour video is beyond excellent. I have a 2006 Ford Explorer (Lucy) with 130k+ miles on it. I just had its transmission rebuilt and bought a new set of tires to get it ready for the next 100k miles or so. A guy at work offered to change the valve cover gaskets for me, but in the process he must to dropped a bolt or something inside the engine, because when he tried to start it, the engine seized and never started anymore. He immediately said it wasn't his fault and that most likely the engine was old and that was going to happen sooner or later. A week later he told me that he felt bad about what had happened and offered to swap the engine if I bought a new one. So, as you must have already guessed it, I bought a new engine and the guy started the swap. It took him 3 days to removed the old engine and about 3 weeks to drop in the new one. Losing bolts, ripping hoses and breaking pipes in the process. A month later he asked me if I still wanted him to finish the job, to which I replied, NO. He had done enough damage and I have learned the lesson. I tried getting more than a few of the so called "Mechanics" to come and finish the job, and they all said yes, but none one ever showed up. My poor Lucy has been in my garage for more than a year now. I normally do my own oil changes, tune-ups and breaks, but I've never messed with the engine before, but after watching your video I have decided to take matters into my own hands. Wish me luck. 👨🔧

Your videos are really well-thought out and excellently presented. I'll be replacing the fuel-pressure sensor on my '05 soon, and everyone complains it's a PITA to reinstall the last T30 bolt on the rear of the intake manifold. Do you have any tips on doing that?
Use a T30 with a 6” wobbly extension and a 3/8 ratchet. Not a swivel adapter, the extension is rounded at the end allowing some play. With that combination it’s mad easy.
How to install a 4.0 SOHC. Step 1: Determine vehicle needs a timing chain or head gasket prior. Step 2: Clean it up and sell vehicle. Step 3: Buy same Explorer with 4.6. Step 4: get knob polish.
ford ranger slightly different for accessories and unfortunately i think the bay is a little smaller but about the same, this is helpful, but it makes me want to discharge my AC for the extra room...
The bay is definitely smaller. The plenum is different, harness is confusing, things all over the place. That’s why I literally won’t touch a ranger. I can have an engine out of an explorer in 3 hours.
I don’t know if I said thank you or not but let me take the time to thank you and so should any other aspiring mechanic. Do you have Patreon? I don’t got a lot of money that’s for sure but I feel like I owe you min. a case of beer.
You don't owe me anything. I appreciate you watching the video, and I'm glad that I was able to help. There sure isn't a lot of info on the explorers (4.0) and thats why I started doing these in the first place. Any questions don't hesitate to ask.
Great Job on the Engine installation video, I love detail. It is similar to a Ford Ranger. Do you have one of the 4.0L SOHC installation on a Ford Ranger?
Hey My brottha You think i can use a zipbelts ..i don't wanna use chain ( i don't have it and i don't wan take a Lot of parts You think that is posible??
I’ve taken this engine out 3times doing a install the torque converter I’m not all the way threw the wholes first I thought I wasn’t all the way back now I’m wondering is the transmission bad ? Or does the torque not go all the way back ? HEEEELLLLPPP MEEEEE
It looks like there is plenty of room to put the exhaust on before puting the engine in. Or does it get in the way when aligning the engine to the transmission?
@@iamdjnam I now found out it's best to leave them off, because the starter is easy to get to with them off. More space to work things around. I was tempted to put them on first, but I decided to hold off on that. Glad I did.
Hey boss I really appreciate the video, and chance you know the bolt size that is used in the back of the motor for lifting, the (shorter bolt) mentioned in the video
Hello. Great video brother. I have same truck. All my wires to maf sensor and injectors and wires to the alternator are all frayed and chipping plastic. I tried to just electric tape them but when i move them the engine shuts off. Will the while engine have to come off to replace that harness? Thanks.
The engine doesn’t need to come out but you should cut the harness wrap and just splice in new connectors. Ford engine and transmission share the same harness so you need to unplug transmission too. It costs a fortune to replace
The wires touch and the engine shuts off. It's literally 50+ wires. That's y I'm thinking replacing the harness because it's got to be like that all over. The further I look the more I find. Thanks for the quick response.
I’m currently in the middle of removing the engine in my 2010 explorer I’ve got all of my bolts out the starter is out and the torque converter ones as well but it’s still stuck together how did you separate the two??
Awesome you really know your way around these 4.0's. I messaged you a few days ago and I have to ask. My top driver side timing chain guide has come apart. I'm told you have to pull the engine to replace it. After watching your rebuild video, I'm think it woud be possible to replace ths timing chain and guide without pulling the engine? I know a complete rebuild make sense but I can't afford this at this time. This engine has 270,000 miles on it, but runs and sounds perfect except for the timing chain issue. Your thoughts wouls be appreciated. Thanks
You sir are a magician/wizard ... I have had to deal with installing this engine in the 2001-2007 Rangers and they're nothing short of a proverbial nightmare. BTW ... How did you keep from snapping the exhaust manifold studs off? I heated mine up with a torch and some of them still broke off.
@@iamdjnam You're welcome ... I used map gas too but this was a 2007 Ranger from Northern W.V. and it took on a lot of salt so needless to say, every nut and bolt was rusted on. I saw one of those stud extractors at NAPA and I was going to get it until I saw they wanted $52 for it.
Alright getting a lot closer to finishing and she fired up. However I am getting a serious smoke problem. It isn’t a fluid burning I don’t think, but i can’t see exactly where from. It looks like from the exhaust but the smoke is billowing from around the intake area. No leaks from the coolant system or oil which is a plus. Is it normal for the engine to burn off stuff when first firing it back up?
Flexplate is for a manual transmission Flywheels for automatic transmission. Both of those bolts up to the engine between either the clutch or converter. And that piece of metal spacer or shim is called a piece of $#!÷@ that keeps falling off. That's what I call it
Mr Platinum. Is it possible to install the engine with the intake and exhaust manifolds on the engine? I'm trying to install as much as possible on the engine, then install it. Thanks for your help.
Hello, I have a 2010 Ford Explorer and recently got work done to the engine. However, when I received back from the shop we noticed it vibrate on idle but does not vibrate when cruising/driving around. I was wondering if you have an idea what it could be
Runs like butter. Ours have a 🔧 💡 on check engine 💡 as well. The wrench light comes on disables cruise control while on highway causing it to run faster and engine hesitant to accelerate when my foot on the gas pedal. What could be the problem? 2009 xlt 4.0l v6 5 speed.
I have a bit of a weird question here. I am putting a 4.0L in a Ranger and I see that your AC compressor is more at an angle rather then straight across like mine is. Do you know if they changed up brackets at all between the years? (I didn't realize the 4.0 I was putting in was an Explorer engine until I was having issues with getting the AC to clear the battery tray
I had someone put in a use 4.0L engine in my 07 explorer but the engine doesn't turn on now obviously the mechanic i hired doesn't know what he's doing but I did talk to some mechanics and they said something about resetting the ignition
2005 sport Trac 4.0. Just replace the engine but I never noticed an engine ground. There's one on the firewall near the PCM connection but nothing on the block that I remember. Do you know where the engine ground would be on this vehicle
Just wrapped up my 4.0 project and it works GREAT largely due to your excellent video. So THANK YOU! Now that its back together I found one oil leak. Oil is dripping from the pass side tensioner right onto the exhaust manifold. So it wreaks, but at least its burning off and not making my engine gunky lol! Anyway, I have the tensioner torqued correctly, and I do have the washer installed with it. I'm wondering if there's something else I should be doing there to prevent the oil from leaking? Gasket? Sealant? Any thoughts?
Don’t use anything except the crush washer. The mating surface may be nicked or the washer not fully centered. You can try cleaning the surface with a fine fine fine fine emery cloth at your own risk! Aluminum is very easy to scratch!
Just be careful cuz the torque spec on those is only 32ft lbs. you don’t want to pull threads out of the head. Usually when they leak the washer isn’t centered.
Getting things bolted on… ordered a new bolt for harmonic balancer and got a 6A340-B which measures 51mm long instead of the 72mm? I got it from a dealer? What part number should it be? Thx
Thanks my first 4 digits were different from yours and my bolt was about an inch shorter. Try to find some one who has it tomorrow. Well thx again you make it look so easy but then again I’m 67!
If it’s a auto the torque converter probably unclicked and it’s locked on the pump. You gotta pull the engine back out and make sure that converter is fully seated.
I have an 03 explorer that I got from someone. I do not know the history on it. I took the passenger side valve cover off and one of the valve springs is broke and the valve seams stuck. I assume it got bent. Everything else looks good. I am going to take the head off and I am hoping I can just replace the valve and spring, put a new head gasket on and drive off into the sunset. Do you to think that would work?
@@iamdjnam Is that the spot it needs to go. Are can it bolt to the back of the passenger side cylinder head. Also can you check out my video of the issue i am having and maybe comment with your thoughts. czcams.com/video/rq4dJqT_sRU/video.html
Hey Nick good news it Runs! Bad news it’s missing! I have had so little time to work on this it’s a little disappointing. Any advice to where to start? Thx ps I love the end of this video! Oh the misses get more frequent with time running.
Have you ever seen a cassette blow up and crack a head? I got my hands on a scope and I think I see water droplets on top of piston. Its the number 4 cylinder right next to the front cassette.. that sucks looks like I have to confirm with leak down test.
Hey Nick got the leak down test and confirmed that air is coming out the timing chain, the head is still on and that number 4 cylinder plug was fouling. This is bad… with a piece of rubber hose it is loudest down about 6 inches? That sounds like a block issue. I still have the front timing cover on leaning towards taking that off and spraying soapy water on the block. Got a better suggestion aside from lighting a match?
I'm having trouble lining up 2 torque converter bolts. One bolt is almost aligned center and the other above it is half aligned, tips on getting converter bolts aligned?
@@iamdjnam After much tilting and shifting I decided to pull the motor back up and check the flywheel. It wasn't the same from a 2007 mustang to a 2006, the holes were slightly off so I had to swap flywheels. It's all bolted up now thanks for replying
Question I'm replacing my exhaust manifold and the felpro kit came with two little green sleeves, do you know where those go? Do you know what size studs and nuts are a good replacement for the exhaust manifold bolt? I can't for the life of me find where those green sleeves go
Hey I have a question, I am rebuilding a 4.0 it over heated, when I go to put the camshaft in they are hard to turn do you think the head shrink, this is my first 4.0 built
Take it to a machine shop and have them check for warpage. Cams toques down should not be super tight to turn. Whenever an engine I’m working on has over heated badly, I always find a donor motor and start fresh. Lots of things can go wrong with heat.

I refuse to touch a Ranger.
great job!!!
Excellent video
Thank you much appreciated

Nice Job
Chris PLACE Thank you!

Appreciate the support bro!
Where do the ground wire go
It looks like there is plenty of room to put the exhaust on before puting the engine in. Or does it get in the way when aligning the engine to the transmission?
You can’t see the torque converter studs with it on. I’ve done it before but it’s quicker in the end to leave them off
@@iamdjnam I now found out it's best to leave them off, because the starter is easy to get to with them off. More space to work things around. I was tempted to put them on first, but I decided to hold off on that. Glad I did.
Nicely done!
If doing this inside, what minimum ceiling clearance is needed for the engine lift. Thanks
I do these in my garage all the time. Take all the slack out of the chain. It will be able to clear a standard garage door.
@@iamdjnam thank you for your prompt reply and your selflessness in helping others, especially during these times
Hey boss I really appreciate the video, and chance you know the bolt size that is used in the back of the motor for lifting, the (shorter bolt) mentioned in the video
It’s an m10x1.5. Length depends on what chain you’re using
8 bellhousing, 2 starter, 4 torque converter. Pry from wheel well using long crowbar in between engine and trans.
@@iamdjnam oh we may have missed them then cause we only counted 6 bolts from the bell housing I believe
@@iamdjnam I’ve looked and can’t find any more bolts it still will not separate 🤦♂️🤔

Thanks
Watch my newest 4.0 video on how to replace the front chains. Engine can stay in the vehicle.
Where do you buy your parts car?
You sir are a magician/wizard ... I have had to deal with installing this engine in the 2001-2007 Rangers and they're nothing short of a proverbial nightmare. BTW ... How did you keep from snapping the exhaust manifold studs off? I heated mine up with a torch and some of them still broke off.
Thank you for your kind words. I use MAP gas. If they break off I have a stud extractor tool.

@@iamdjnam WOW ... I'm taking a trip to Amazon :-)
Use air impact. No one break. I have bad winter weather.
Yes it’s normal to have some smoke, shouldn’t have much more than seen in this video. Make sure it isn’t an electrical harness burning.
That part between the engine and transmission is called the flex plate.
rob peters thanks for clarifying. I always thought the flexplate was bolted to the crankshaft (torque converter studs go through it too).
Flexplate is for a manual transmission Flywheels for automatic transmission. Both of those bolts up to the engine between either the clutch or converter. And that piece of metal spacer or shim is called a piece of $#!÷@ that keeps falling off. That's what I call it
It’s a turd isn’t it…. Sometimes takes longer to keep that in place than it does to actually get the engine running again.
Yeah one of the many wonderful things that automakers do for us to keep the blood flowing and to keep beer off the shelves. I'm doing one right now
@@turdferguson1915 You got it ass-backwards... a manual transmission has a flywheel and an automatic has a flex plate.
Did you use an aftermarket timing kit, or OEM?
Aftermarket.
ok good
Mr Platinum. Is it possible to install the engine with the intake and exhaust manifolds on the engine? I'm trying to install as much as possible on the engine, then install it. Thanks for your help.
You can install the engine with the exhaust manifolds on. The intake must be removed so you can plug in all your connectors for the harness :)
How many miles on the engine ?
So how about swapping out my engine on my 2006 ranger?
I can provide engine but i can't do it because of my age and physical issues
No sorry, don’t work on others vehicles.
Are Ranger 4.0L engines the same across those years?
Yes
Hello, I have a 2010 Ford Explorer and recently got work done to the engine. However, when I received back from the shop we noticed it vibrate on idle but does not vibrate when cruising/driving around. I was wondering if you have an idea what it could be
Check the harmonic balancer. The weights break off inside of it.
Accelerator pedal position sensor, TPS, any of the wheel hub units defective. Get the codes scanned.
Chances are they’re different. They explorer engine bay is much bigger than the ranger.
What kit do you use? I don’t wanna pay a shit ton but want it to last. Th aks

my project is swapping a 2001 4-l into a 2006 4-l. what are the problems with this swap?
Nothing. It will be a direct fit. Good luck!
I had someone put in a use 4.0L engine in my 07 explorer but the engine doesn't turn on now obviously the mechanic i hired doesn't know what he's doing but I did talk to some mechanics and they said something about resetting the ignition
No such thing as resetting the ignition. The mechanic messed up.
2005 sport Trac 4.0. Just replace the engine but I never noticed an engine ground. There's one on the firewall near the PCM connection but nothing on the block that I remember. Do you know where the engine ground would be on this vehicle
There’s 2. One goes to starter the other goes from back of cylinder head to firewall.
@@iamdjnam thanks. I sure didn't see cylinder head to firewall.
@@iamdjnam Gotcha!
Thx

Any tips on removing the passenger side exhaust manifold?
Passenger side is easier than the drivers side. 13mm with a breaker bar. Hit the nuts with MAP gas, count to 20 and you’ll be good.

Super beginner question: Can I install this (Explorer) engine to my 07 Explorer Sport Trac V6?
Yes
What can be done to give the 4 l, more horsepower
Port the heads, bore the cylinders. Long tube headers and a tune.
I’m having a problem turning my flywheel. The main pulley won’t turn. What do I need to do? Also I have an 06 mustang v6
Is the motor locked?
@@iamdjnam no. It was turning before I hooked it to the transmission
If it’s a auto the torque converter probably unclicked and it’s locked on the pump. You gotta pull the engine back out and make sure that converter is fully seated.
@@iamdjnam the torque converter was turning too
Something holding it up. I’m not sure because I’m not there.
Absolutely! Amazon sells cheap ass headgasket kits that are actually very very good quality. Make sure your timing cassettes are good.
@@iamdjnam thank you. As far as the cassettes, the part I can see from taking the valve cover off looks perfect
The ground wire coming from the fire wall. Where did that bolt up too
right above the exhaust manifold. 10mm bolt. I think its above the 2nd runner.

Hey Nick good news it Runs! Bad news it’s missing! I have had so little time to work on this it’s a little disappointing. Any advice to where to start? Thx ps I love the end of this video! Oh the misses get more frequent with time running.
Vacuum leaks, plugs, wires, O2 sensors.
Have you ever seen a cassette blow up and crack a head? I got my hands on a scope and I think I see water droplets on top of piston. Its the number 4 cylinder right next to the front cassette.. that sucks looks like I have to confirm with leak down test.
Never. Might be condensation. I’ve seen them blow valve covers to smitherines
Hey thanks again… I’ve got a leak down kit coming today. It was fine before the cassette blowing up and yes it blew up my cover.
The angle is wrong. Tilt the engine back or lower the trans a little.
@@iamdjnam After much tilting and shifting I decided to pull the motor back up and check the flywheel. It wasn't the same from a 2007 mustang to a 2006, the holes were slightly off so I had to swap flywheels. It's all bolted up now thanks for replying
