  • The Beatles left Liverpool for Hamburg in August 1960 to appear live on stage on the Grosse Freiheit. Follow David Bedford as he takes a walk down the Grosse Freiheit to see where the Beatles lived at the Bambi Kino, and where they performed live at the Indra Club and the Kaiserkeller.
    John, Paul, George, Stuart and Pete took to the stage on 17th August 1960 at the Indra Club, before it was closed down. They then moved to the Kaiserkellerwhere they were joined by Rory Storm and the Hurricanes.
    The Beatles definitely grew up in Hamburg, as John Lennon said.
    David is using his latest book "The Beatles Fab Four Cities", written with Richard Porter and Susan Ryan, to get around Hamburg.

    I can't believe i'm seeing this again. i went to Hamburg on a Beatles tour of London, Liverpool and Hamburg in 1986. Horst Fascher (the bouncer from the Kaiserkeller) was our guide in Hamburg. He showed us all of these sights. It was my first time in Europe and I was awestruck. I always wanted to see the Hamburg sights that I had read about. I want to thank you so much for this.

      It is our pleasure. Not many fans get to visit Hamburg so we wanted to bring Hamburg to the fans. I was hoping to meet up with Horst, but he isn't in the best of health at the moment. Hopefully next time. Glad you like the video, with part 2 coming this weekend.

      I'm sorry that Horst isn't in the best of health. He's a very nice man and a wonderful tour guide. He told us details about things that only someone who was actually there would know. He took us to where the Star Club was (there had been a fire). He showed us where the stage was and the corner where John would be singing. Later that day, I took a walk by myself and took a little chunk from the stage as my own souvenir (Don't tell anybody - I still have it)

      +Jeff Wier The thing about the deportations is that they had a contract with Koschmider and thought it was ok to break it. To be fair to Koschmider, he took the risk to bring them to Hamburg, so no wonder he wasn't happy! Naughty Beatles!! 😂

    I have been there a view years ago.
    Really sad is what has happened to the Star Club.
    Funfact surely of almost no importance to Beatles Fans is that
    when you come into Große Freiheit from the other end, which is from Reeperbahn, one of the first buildings you will pass on the left hand side is
    "Große Freiheit Nummer 7".
    That was the title of a German movie, or actually film, as we say in German.
    The star of that movie was Hans Albers. A famous actor in the time of the Nazis and later until the time the Beatles came up.
    It is still a dance club.
    Thanks for the video....

    • @BrightmoonLiverpool
      @BrightmoonLiverpool  Před 2 lety

      +Michael Hüttig I have heard of Hans Albers, a famous actor. I must have a look for that film. Was it set on Grosse Freiheit I assume?

    • @michaelhuttig6596
      @michaelhuttig6596 Před 2 lety

      @@BrightmoonLiverpool yes, mainly at that venue Nummer 7.
      But I was a little boy when I saw it with my grandfather who was a big fan.
      I can't therefore really remember or judge if it was done at the original places or if it was set up in the studio.
      But the name of that street was planted in my brain long before I read my first Beatles biography written by Hunter Davis and stolen with just the help of my little brother in the grocery store down the street were I grew up near Stuttgart.
      Man, I was nervous and proud at the same time, hahaha..
      Before anybody judges too harshly on a 13 year old boy, they left unsold magazines and books on the doorstep of the shop and we went there in the hope for some Asterix or at least Mickey Mouse.
      I got something way better though.
      Read it twice in the next two weeks.
      Albers, btw, was kind of a German John Wayne. You know, this good hearted but bad mooded guy who was able to turn things into something good in the end.

    No doubt whatsoever Koschmider would have been paying off the Police generally. It's how things worked back in the day. Getting leverage once he decided to act was a fait accompli.
    Personally, I think the boys were lucky he decided only just to have them deported in exacting revenge. Walking the beat in our seedy district as a young man, I've known nightclub owners who would have dealt with such a matter differently, and have. Their careers and future fame might well have ended right there had Koschmider instead decided to take have them persuaded of the error of their ways by the local enforcers for hire. I don't think they would have started with a hammer to the hands as Koschmider would have wanted them to continue playing at his clubs, but given Lennon's mouth, I could see that escalating rapidly to having become a distinct possibility. With Lennon's and possibly Harrison's fingers and hands turned into a bloody mass of flesh and bone Wiener, or in this case Hamburg Schnitzel, The Beatles future could have ended right there. Fortunately as fate would have it, Koschmider was a 'softy' and they got lucky.
