different countries make ice cream differently, so there's subtle difference in creation and so the italian translation in english would mean italian ice cream instead of just ice cream but ice cream in italian would just be gelato.
Gelato has less fat than I've cream which is why it's more dense, it has a less creamy texture and more thick & frozen I guess. Idk how to describe it lol Team Gelato

For the Italians like me reading, what in Canada they call gelato is closer to our idea of gelato artigianale, icecream is everything else. There is a semantic shift that happened in north America, they have apparently two strands of recipes and to one of these they named of "gelato". The meanings in fact overlap, as gelato is a kind of icecream, but icecream is no a kind of gelato...
In pratica è un po' la differenza tra il gelato della gelateria e quello che compri al supermercato, in tutti questi anni non ho mai capito perché gli americani si arrabbiavano se chiamavo il gelato "ice cream" lol.

GELATO 100%. I had gelato on a trip to Italy in 1993. After the first cup, I had in Rome, I made sure to have a cup everyday I was in Italy. I live in New Jersey home of the largest Italian Americans in the US. But I can't find authentic delicious gelato anywhere. Even trying to make it at home but it doesn't match the quality & consistency of Italian gelato. So sad, just so very sad. 💖😋💖😋💖🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹

I tried Gelato for the first time today and had to watch this and figure it out, it's AMAZING!!! what have I done with my life
I just recently tryed gelato and i like it better than ice cream yummmmie 😆 But i still like ice cream it comes in many more flavor but my son rarely eats any icecream other than vanilla and he has tryed and likes more flavors of gelato. I was very surpised but everyone is different .

I like the texture of Gelato but the taste of ice cream
I expect some flavours - like
Chocolate or caramel is very similar. But versions like peach or blood orange, will work much better with gelato

I love both but if I had to choose I do really enjoy the really smooth, light texture of gelato. But it costs more than ice cream so of course I usually get ice cream instead.

Typical retail ice cream is so fluffy and full of air without body it just tastes cheap and isn't pleasant at all.

Fad. There is no standard requirement on how much milk/yolk or churn-speed you need to use for ice cream. Hence ice cream itself comes in huge variety of hardness, smoothness, richness, etc. Gelato is just a "it's Italian, so premiere," but most people will fail blind test between a creamier brand of ice cream with a typical gelato product because they can be almost identical.
The FDA does have requirements for the amount of milk present in a food product before it can be called "ice cream." Of course, that's for commercial purposes, not colloquial.

@@RickJaeger Yeah I have heard about that too, fast food places like Dairy Queen and McDonald's can't legally call their frozen dairy desserts "ice cream" for that reason so they call them "ice milk" or more commonly just "soft serve". Even though colloquially people will still call them ice cream.

Carrageenan comes from seaweed as a thicken agent . these ingredients are used to keep ice cream from melting fast. Do not become a fear monger.
