If I remember correctly part of the Vindicator Mine complex in the Cripple Creek district had a section where trains would run through the main structure. And the waste rock was just piled against the structure. While not exactly what you modeled, it feels similar

It's just a soft paintbrush. I buy cheep craft store brushes for applying glue.
